I agree, contents page and no numbering. Really love having page numbers in books. Also, an introduction and extras etc. Binding doesn't look great on this one and I really wish they would improve that with DC books, even if it adds a few extra pounds as it would make the book even more amazing.

Great review Omar. So, the big question continuity wise here. Outside of the Resurrection of Ras story, are there any other incomplete (broken up) story arcs here? I understand the missing Detective stories by others writers, but are those standalone stories not part of Dini’s story arcs? In other words, beside the Ras arc, can this be read without missing any pieces of an actual arc being told?

I’ve just read it this week. There was no other broken storyline outside of Raas. Just mentions of outside events, such as Batman Inc being created in Morrison run, which causes problems for Hush in the lead up to his next big story arc that’s fully contained in this Dini run. So Raas is the only offender, but at least you get the resolution of it and it’s very satisfying.

this almost works as a companion to the morrison omni's since it was taking place at the same time so i can kind of see their reasoning of skipping the fill in issues that dini didn't write they didn't add to his overall story he was telling (this is what i've heard i haven't read the material yet)

P.S. The actual pronounciation of "Ra's" would be more like the English name "Russ", but with the apostrophe acting as a glottal stop. No idea where they got "Raysh" from, lol.

@@hamzadawudRaysh is how Denny O‘Neil, the creator of the character and basically the creator of the modern Batman pronounced it and most animated shows, video games and the more comic accurate media pronounce it that way.

First of all Omar, thank you for your great work, and being a beacon of the comic world for those of us like me who require guidance in regards to starting off points for books I am unfamiliar with. Being a purely hardcore Marvel head for years, it is only recently I’ve gotten into books by Dark Horse, Vertigo and Image, and I see I’ve deprived myself after binge reading many popular titles (Saga, Sandman, 100 Bullets, Scalped, Criminal, DMZ, etc.), and just recently I’ve purchased Batman Omnis by Loeb and Snyder, as well as the Batman/Superman Omni. I figure since I’m only vaguely familiar with the DC universe that I should take a pass on this one and just focus on the other ones I bought, for now.

Although this has the majority of the Paul Dini Batman issues, what it does not include is the Batman: Mr Freeze prestige format or the Batman Harley Quinn Prestige format. I am still buying this, I love the stories and even better at this size.

That's what I was going to say. If they really wanted this omnibus to be complete, they should have included those two specials Dini wrote years before taking over Detective Comics. The Harley Quinn one is particularly important because it was her comic book continuity debut, and to this day I'm peeved that it wasn't included in the No Man's Land trades.

Great video. But man, I just don't understand the releasing books based on author and artist, etc. How do we understand the character or overall story if they jump around like that. I mean, maybe going by author is okay if they had a really long consecutive run (like long enough to fill an entire omnibus with consecutive issues). But, oh well. Many others will love this! But not me. Keep up the great work!

I am with you man. It’s one of the most obnoxious things about comics for me. So many different tie-ins, so many resets and rebirths and reboots. Different creative teams. It’s just hard to keep up with.

In this case, you are getting the overall story, in as much as there is one. What's "missing" is the fill ins that don't contribute to Paul Dini's story. The only exception to that (the same one they had with the Grant Morrison omnibuses) is "The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul" crossover -- I'd prefer if they included the whole of that story or none of it, but a few chapters from a larger crossover is a terrible choice. But there really isn't (and hasn't been for a long, long time, arguably ever) a single consistent Batman story. Paul Dini's doesn't really mesh with Grant Morrison's, which doesn't really mesh with Scott Snyder's, which doesn't really mesh with Peter Tomasi's, and so on and so on. They may hit some of the same big beats, but they don't add up to some mythical greater understanding of the character or story. On the whole, you'll have a better reading experience if you treat them as separate iterations, in exactly the same way that you cope with The Animated Series not being the same as Beware the Batman or The Brave and the Bold or Batman '89 or the Dark Knight trilogy or Batman V Superman or the 60's show or the Arkham games or...

Good lord I agree. It really pushes me away from the core titles from both DC and Marvel - although DC (with Batman being across so many concurrent titles) is the worst offender. Even with writers who are really careful to keep the throughline in the core title (Snyder was pretty good at this) you still wind up with a lot of bleed into secondary titles.

Got mine last week. The binding was a little tight after opening it 4 or 5 times so did the pen trick and helped to stretch out that binding.

Try a book support system or something to that effect. I found it helps with books that have tight binding and gutter loss. I tried it on my batman synder omni and it made it more readable but I just made a makeshift one bc those things are expensive.

Beautiful book. The issues are not that big that you would not want to buy this book. If you want to use the table of contents, it's not that difficult to page mark the stories in the way that you will find easily the story you are looking for.

I’m tempted to get this, but I dunno, the gaps seem sort of annoying for someone like me who didn’t read all the issues as they were coming out. I really love comics as a medium, but this omnibus is an example of why superhero comics can be so frustrating and why still to this day, after over 15 years of reading comics, I find it difficult to keep up with them. Just so many different crossovers and tie-ins and reboots and rotating creative teams. It can be exhausting. And DC and Marvel sometimes do an absolutely horrible job of preserving past stories for future audiences in these collected editions.

I wish DC would do more smaller Omnis like the Gail Simone WW Omni. They are much easier to read without all that glue to reinforce the binding. I’d way rather have two slimmer volumes of something like this.

@@tomaszdziedzic6284 Paul Dini's run is pretty self contained. You don't really need to read anything else. There is only one mention of an event in Grant Morrison's run on Batman, but's that's all, and it does not disrupt the story.

The omnibus contains Detective Comics #821-824, #826-828, #831, #833-834, #837-841, #843-850, #852, #1000, Batman #685, Batman: Gotham Knights #14, Batman Black and White #3, Batman Black and White Vol. 2 #1, DCU Holiday Special #1, Batman: Streets of Gotham #1-4, #7, #10-14, #16-21, and Batman Annual #1. And, Dick is Batman in the first half of street of gotham.
