i knew disney retellings were innacurate but i didn't know they flat out combined the ring and lamp genie into one character. did find it a bit strange how the genie is only meant to have 3 wishes but then casually does like a million "small" wishes, each musical number alone has at least a dozen wishes in that movie lol

Technically, I don't think anyone "wishes" for anything during the musical numbers. Most of the time the objects, characters, or random bullshit(go) that Genie or Jafar counjer up are confined to the song n' dance sections and then immediately disappear once off screen. Also if Genie creates a prop for himself, it's usually only for him and not the other characters. Actually wishing for something from Genie, makes that thing permanent and you only get 3 of those (not counting Aladin tricking Genie to get him out of the cave). Musical visuals and Genie's sight-gags don't count towards the wishes, even if the other characters can sometimes interact with those.

10:22 Actually, 06 and Secret Rings have an even deeper connection than that, as Secret Rings was apparently initially planned as a Wii port of 06 before they quickly realized that wasn’t gonna be possible and they ended up changing the whole idea. So yeah, it’s not a stretch at all to think that pose was an intentional nod to the 06 render/box art. Especially considering how close they look.

Secret Rings and Black Knight were so packed with a surprising amount of detail that I would have loved to see what the devs could have done with some other inspiration. I know about the official poll revealing that people voted for Greek mythology the most out of a list of other inspirations, but if they had Alice in Wonderland in the list I would have voted for that.

If I recall correctly, the SP cost glitch was patched in the PAL version (or at least, I don't remember it being there when I played the game growing up, and only saw it when emulating the NTSC version).

The gameplay is a bit rough in the storybook series, as showcased here, but I always loved the writing. The segment in the beginning gave me more of an appreciation for Secret Rings, although I have a closer attachment to Black Knight (the ending left a big impression on me as a kid). Glad to see Secret Rings getting a bit of attention :-)

That bug with the sp costs is really strange, I'd be interested to see what's actually happening when the data for that gets loaded to cause that. Since it only happens with those 2 skills I'm guessing it's a poorly written lookup table, might have 2 tables in there one with the error and one without it and it's loading the broken one(???) but thats a bit of a stretch there's no real reason to leave more than 1 loaded copy of that in there. My only guess would be that the lookup table or whatever they're using for the skill prices is split into more than one file probably to make stuff load quicker, DVDs were slow, and the prices got changed twice during development and someone coincidentally mixed up both, that or they're both pulling from the same thing which would be odd, no way to really tell but I'd be interested.

2:18 The Rukh tends to either appear or is referenced to in several other games. One of the most notable example is the "Roc's Feather" in the Legend of Zelda games, which lets Link jump. That was my first introduction to it, and it's why I always assumed that it was pronounced as "rock". Doing a little research on it now, and I'm pretty sure you got it right. I don't know too much about the related mythology, but one thing that is always emphasized are their massive size. I can't say if this is the line they were going for, but follow me on this - manta rays live in warm, tropical waters. Ali Baba described the Rukh in the game as not exactly a bird, but more like a living fossil. Maybe through some sort of magical shenanigans, the remains of a massive manta ray were reanimated and its being mistaken as a Rukh? It's a long line of logic to follow so I don't think it's accurate, but it was interesting to learn that manta rays do actually live in the region.

Great video. Since you asked for potential other references to "The Thousand and One Nights", I would say that the most subtle in the entire game is the choice to have Eggman play King Shahryar. King Sharhyar being the once just king who became a tyrant after he caught his wife doing...things with servants that KZbin would not like me describing. He came to assess all women negatively and thus began to every day choose a random woman spend the night with only to make her "expire" the next day. Scheherazade volunteered herself for this position with the goal of keeping the king from "expiring" any more women by telling him stories every night and always promising that the ones saved for the next night would be even more wondrous. The king, not wanting to miss out on more fantastic tales, keeps Scheherazade alive and neglects bringing any other women to his room the entire time. Which is the framing device justifying so many stories being told. I can't help but feel as though Eggman is the perfect fit for King Shahryar because...well...the canonical king's extreme leap in logic prejudicing him against all women definitely seems like a level of juvenile reasoning befitting Eggman as a ruler. Especially the idea that what stays his hand from ending Scheherazade is his boyish delight over getting to hear new tales. (Pardon some really bizarre vocabulary I used here; KZbin is extremely capricious these days over what terms they allow in comments and have not been gracious enough to give a guide, so I have to use euphemisms to be safe.)

I feel a little called out, with the first one I, only ever saw Disney Aladdin. I read a, I think a scholastic, adaptation of King Arthur. Even read a bit of the original (maybe), on a kindle thing ... But, all I know about Arabian Nights, comes from the Disney movie ... And, a play I saw as a kid. But I think that was based off of the Disney movie. And the only thing I remember from that, is "Arabian nights~, like Arabian days~! Where it's hotter than hot"

Interesting with king Solomon as it would be the second (?) time the series has had direct biblical references. There are Ichtys symbols in Sonic R, iconography of fish used to symbolize Jesus Christ. Then again Maria and the Ark having the names they do is also probably a reference.
