Only a proper mechanic can fix a car on the side of the road with bugger all well done mate!

I've owned and worked on many SD1, you can usually revive the submerged type fuel pump many times. The vane impeller dries out, or gums up and sticks if they're not used often, used with cheap fuel, or constantly run on a near empty tank. It runs dry and sucks air on cornering / braking and overheats. It relies on the fuel to lubricate and cool it. Take it out and pull off the gauze filter, then give it a dose of carb cleaner in both ports. Run it forwards and backwards by connecting to a battery and keep swapping the polarity every few minutes. You may need to gently coax the impeller to move with a thin screwdriver before you power it up. Once it runs smooth, repeat the process with WD40 until it runs smooth and quiet. Refit making sure to connect red lead to + or it won't pump at full pressure. If you don't use it regularly, or always with low fuel, a small shot of 2 stroke oil in the tank every few weeks will help stop the sticking problem. Not too much 2 stroke or it will smoke from the exhaust. I've always kept a spare in all mine, and tools for the fixings and fuel pipe. Only ever had to swap one that suddenly stuck solid, on the hard shoulder of the M180, on my first 1979 3500 in the early 80's.

Respect for sorting car out at the side of the motorway. Glad you made it safe and thank god it wasn’t one of the stupid smart motorways with no hard shoulder!

Hi Mart, very good to meet you too. Yes I certainly didn’t need that pump to fail in the way home. It was seriously jammy that I had a spare pump randomly in the box I keep all my spare gearbox bits or I would have been snookered

Thank You again for all the work and stress you have put in - I have probably 25+ years over you and I shudder at the thought of what you have achieved. that's what happens when you get older. In the early 90's I was probably around your age - it was different then - I had it easy by comparison - You know what you are doing, just don't burn out in the quest - you need to be around for a while to pass on your knowledge to the next generation!! by the way - more DAF van videos please
