In today's episode of Dungeons and Dragons Horror Stories, we have a tale of a power gamer that says all bards have to play music, and that roleplay is stupid. Then a thatguy player that plays into the typical bard trope.

I am planning a card based warlock, who did not sell his soul for powers, he gambled it. He did not even to it for the powers, he did it for the thrill of gambling with a devil. The deck of cards he used in the game is his arcane focus and as he is casting spells, he is pulling cards out of the, now infinite deck, and throwing them.

I liked playing a Spirit Bard as someone who collected stories from relatives of the diseased, to give the relatives a chance to talk to their loved ones even if in the form of an illusion. Phantasm Force was a 1 minute way to say goodbye and have it feel real. That and/or play a Spirit Bard as some bartender that uses "spirits", offering the "Angel's Share" for bigger spells

I will always be baffled by people who get angry at people Roleplaying in a Tabletop ROLEPLAYING game. D&D,pathfinder,etc. Have always been a means to channel creativity, tell a campaign's story and how it shifts as the player's actions pend. Sounds like the problem player should just stick with playing a video game if dominating was the only thing that mattered in his eyes. That being said,bards can be fun if done right as I'm making two for 2 different campaigns. One is a winged tiefling glamour bard flavored as an incubus whom yes does seduce from time to time [as incubi do] was built to be a spymaster. The other is a sea elf valor bard who aspires to Chronicle a riveting hero's tale while engaging in some heroics as well which drives him to venture out onto his journey with the future party.

My group has a character who appears, on the surface, to be a typical horny Bard, but is actually deeply scarred by a past betrayal and uses it as a coping mechanism. Whenever someone he likes actually flirts back, he ends up a stuttering mess. And my character basically inserts snarky comments whenever he does something stupid, resulting in more flailing. I think it makes for a pretty neat character.

Assuming the game had a lot of RP before the bard showed up (which it seems like, given the 6 months of downtime the party got for a level up), the rogue should've left the game and found one that fits his playstyle. Though the DM should not have allowed the PvP with the rogue AND the bard.

On the Roland the Ratboy story, this guy is probably the sort of guy who doesn't give a flying fart about anything but his power fantasy. He should only play single player games that have no cutscenes. I think the Atari era would be right up his alley. Also, I think OP for that story was a wonderful twist on the overly common instrument-playing bard and a fine return to the oratory origination. On the Danny Bard story: Never try and target a player in game for out-of-game actions (or lack thereof) or in-game horniness. If you can't tolerate a person, boot them.

Complaints about non-musical bards that have books are just weird. In 2nd edition AD&D, the bard cast spells just like a wizard, from a spellbook. Also in 2e The Complete Bard had many kits (think of them as early subclasses that start at level 1 if you're not familiar) that emphasized different performance styles. Even the 5e bard description clearly emphasizes stories as much as music. So every complaint the powergamer had about bards translated to me as "You're playing a bard! Who's... a bard!" It kept me wondering what I was missing until I realized the powergamer just had no idea what he was talking about.

Story 1 's rogue would've been told to get the fuck off my table as soon as he said bards have to do music. Norse skalds ARE bards, and most of them didn't have instruments, but told stories. I mean strictly speaking, 5e's rules *REQUIRE* an instrument for Bards, because it's their spellcasting focus. Without it, a Bard must cast spells with the material components of any spell (but they'd be fine for any verbal/somatic only spells). Within those restrictions of the rules, however, you're right - you could play a Skald, it'd just cost you certain spells. (But of course, the DM has absolute authority and can overwrite this)

They have an issue with how someone runs a class but instead of accepting that this was run by the DM and OK’d or at least process that it’s a different take than the norm, THEY TRY TO SEVERELY CRIPPLE THEIR PARTY MEMBER’S OPTIONS. You aren’t winning brownie points for being a goddamn vigilante, or proving that you’re opinion on how someone should play their class is correct by trashing their character’s foci needed to cast or do their job. … shit, did I lose it? Ah, I remember my first Bard when I began playing 5e. It was a lore Bard, a Tiefling that started as a street hustler and found that invoking Lathander and telling tales of redemption while passing himself off as a Cleric got him more "donations" during his street performances. He effectively became an evangelist and started believing in his own teachings, his sermons were his songs and he had a book of stories about Lathander that he would slap or pound his hand on as his instrument. The party believed he was a Cleric for a while, as he kept his spells close to the Cleric's list. I'm telling you that thaumaturgy, message, and cure wounds really helped sell the show.

Mine was a Hobgoblin with no offensive spells, and was suuuuper ugly. When he died, because he was so annoying and ugly, he was kicked out of both heaven and hell, and had to stay on the material plane as a ghost. This was seen by a cleric who recently joined, who then left the next session. The DM had his now npc of a character start a cult around my ex-bard, which eventually led him to acquiring enough followers to become a demigod. Hey! I'm a new subscriber and I love your channel 💜 I think in the first story there's something the OP did wrong despite the Rogue being an absolute nightmare of a player. The Rogue was new into an stablished group of friends that have been playing for years, and OP was sharing stories about older stuff that didn't involved the Rogue in the slightest, nor seemed to reach Rogue's player to tell his stories too and include him somehow, and fairly enough that would make anyone feel left out, not invested because those are unknown characters, or even outright bored. Also, personally I think that this kind of "telling stories/playing music" bard should be done very carefully since there's always the possibility of the bard taking too much time and the shtick getting old very fast, and if there's 6 NPCs to talk to that day, it may get tedious to have the bard telling 6 different stories and not letting too much space to other players to interact freely. Telling stories, music, joking, etc is something that may get old very fast in the wrong hands. I still think the Bard was cool and the Rogue was a flaming douchebag, but I think it was worth to put thar on the spot since TTRPGs are fundamentally teamwork-based games, not just roleplaying and rolling dice. Making every player feel included and engaged is very very important.
@StSubZero
@StSubZero 8 ай бұрын
Which is a perfectly fair and valid point, since no one likes a spotlight hog. Though OP mentions he only did it twice in between the first four sessions, probably wanting to only resort to it when all other options have failed / as you mentioned letting everyone else feel included, which to be fair he did consider the possibility of the Rogue feeling left out when someone mentioned things to him.

D&D is 50/50, 50% RP, and 50% combat, but every game is different, and these numbers are not static and can be adjusted to fit tables. I once played right into the Bard trope, with one of my Groups favourite Bards, (Second to that Gnome), at one point in order to get past some local thugs my Tiefling Bard cast a major image and created the image of the Lord's Wife (who He had a thing for), dressed like a stripper and dancing around a campfire, the party's fighter punched the Bard, as he was having an affair with her. but it worked the Thugs were distracted long enough for the Rogue to free the Lord's Daughter, who also failed to see threw the illusion.

I think we can all agree that the problem player in the first story does indeed suck. BUT. I have seen more than my share of players who think "Good RP = Word Count." I've had to reel in so many players as a GM because they just get lost in their own sauce and filibuster while RPing some Charm or Deception check, just going on and on and on like it's Night at the Improv. And while sure it's fun, I'm looking at the clock and crunching numbers in my head to see if we can even make it through that planned encounter I had set up at this point because we've got a hard cutoff time of 10:30 and The Face just won't. stop. talking. And what are you gonna do as a GM? Tell them they need to stop doing the one thing their character is built around while they're smiling and cracking themselves up? No, you'd be the jerk in that case. But then it gets late and oops. We ran out of time. Guess the encounter has to wait for next week, which seriously throws off all my planning as a GM. But you still can't say anything. I have been there so many times. So I don't know, that part kind of stuck out as a potential issue. I'm not saying OP was one of those people (although the long-winded nature of the post kind of supports that theory), but I do hope that they did some self reflection and made sure that they weren't constantly putting on a one-person play while everyone else is waiting their turn to do something.

So bard created a character that made one of the other players feel unengaged in RP and he turned to power gaming. Then you gave him something half way fun to do but kept him under leveled and then kicked him for trying to engage in any firm of RP. Pretty sure rogue was never the problem.

The DM should totally stop describing anything to the Rogue. Since rp clearly doesnt matter. Just suddenly ask as the party is walking does a 32 hit. When he asks whats attacking. "Oh just a tarrasque. I didnt feel like i needed to rp it walking toward the party." (Just to clarify. This was a joke)

Why do people like the Rogue exist, he doesn't care about RP at all, but hates the way the bard's RPing because his character is reading instead of singing. I hate when players get antsy when your character doesn't look exactly like the character on the class's section of the PHB.

Considering how much the guy skipped out on RP and spent time as an animal in a cage... I'd start taking way EXP... After all, he's letting his skills at everything but being an animal lapse through lack of motivation and effort!

Story one, the moment my book got burned, I’d be out as a player. As we say, no dnd is better than bad dnd. It’s a team game, unless you have some specific and interesting reason to not be part of the team, you are probably just ruining someone else’s entire evening.

I'm still convinced bard shouldn't be a class. Not for any memes or poor reputation reasons. It's just that it's a proffession not a class or archetype. It's equally accurate to say a fighter, rogue, wizard, or any other class with the entertainer background is just as much a bard as the bard class. Just different flavors of bard.
@MrJoeyWheeler
@MrJoeyWheeler 2 жыл бұрын
I can see your point but Wizards are also professions. If we went down this route, then we could easily cut down the classes to Fighter, Cleric, Naturalist, Intellectual, Warlock, Sorcerer - with Druids and Rangers both being subgroups of "Naturalist" and the Wizard, Artificer, and Bard becoming a subset of "Intellectual". Or something like that.

I'm a bit confused - why did they kick him? The moment they had was awesome and they kick him instead of turning it into a learning moment? DM should've stopped him before he fought and gave him the conscious choice: RP your way out or fight. Either way they have a great opportunity to RP from that point. So they get the opportunity to get what they want and they decide it's too much work to teach a person to RP so kick him out? Then he's what- surprised that the group Rogue is DMing is having a bad time? Of course they are, how can you possibly be surprised. This is on them, too, as much as it is the Rogue because of the actions at the end in my opinion.

Am I the only who’s noticed people who start with 3.5 or earlier have these preconceived notions about what classes should be and can’t think outside the box at all. (Note I learned with 3.5 so I know it’s not a universal truth.)

They're pretty bad if played as the only class of the character, but it really depends on the powerlevel and type of campaign. While pretty bad, they still have good and interesting prestige classes (of which i can't remember the english name 'cause i'm italian) and some "get out of jail free cards" like suggestion or glibness (a flat +30 to Bluff) I won't enter into roleplay territory because i think you can find fun even playing a commoner if you have the right mindset and a good DM TLDR: 3.5 Bard is bad but cool, can become very good if built correctly

It's not. Single-class bards are fairly competent. Monk and samurai are bad, but bards are pretty competent. Not as good in specialties as others, but good for a support role.

Isn't a bards whole purpose telling tales through orally? If the guy wants to be a dick about it why isn't he trying to force every bard to do spoken poetry and epics since that is more aligned with what a bard is. A bard could be a puppeteer honestly

Vicious mockery, cutting word, power word stun, power word kill - yes a lore bard absolutely can talk someone to death! Also, lore bards are a magic-focused subclass, getting extra arcane secrets at level 6, making for some of the most versatile casters in the game, and the phb says bards "can" use musical instruments as a spellcasting focus, it doesn't say they "must" or "may only" use a musical instrument. Per RAW, a wizard's spellbook isn't even a spellcasting focus! On the rogue saying rp is "mechanically irrelevant", go play Warhammer Fantasy. If you're keeping score in D&D, you're missing the point of the game. To say that rp is mechanically irrelevant in 5e D&D is factually incorrect, given that expressing your character’s personality traits is, per RAW, how you gain inspiration. There's not necessarily anything wrong with playing a thirsty bard, they can be fun characters! I've been playing a bard for more than a year going through a coming-of-age narrative, and exploring her sexuality is an important part of that. That said, sexual assault isn't a personality.

Is there a way for me to do such a thing without being sounding or acting like an @$$. I know some of the basics such as dont bring in game bs into the real world as well as no loan wolf edge lord murmur hobo crap. While it certainly had problems I much preferred 4E over 3.5. That's not exactly high praise though as I prefer pretty much every ttrpg over 3.5 DnD as I just do not care for it. That might be due to the extreme gaps in character strength and how its' hardcore fans often seem to be powergamers.
