If you read the lore short on the creation of the void, it is heavily suggested that Jax was present in the battle against shurima and the ascended. The soldier in question stood over a head taller than his underlings, he wielded a pole arm that only he was uniquely able to weird, and his favored food was eggs (Jax supposedly only favors eggs from a specific aviary in shurima). though he did survive the battle and the summoning of the void-scar that ended it, it is definitely a possibility that he did not escape its influence and kinda mutated from the initial exposure.

To every non-toplaner in this comment section, I'm going to summarize what's going on in top lane for you: 1. Top lane is not fun. It's a 1v2 cheese fest and only masochistic fucks like me enjoy it. 2. Top lane is decided in champ select. It's pretty much rock paper scissors, you pick cho'gath? I pick darius. You pick riven? I pick teemo, Jax? Jayce. Etc. 3. Good top *laners* are bad scalers. Good top lane *scalers* are bad in lane. 4. Ranged champs and getting camped by a jungler prevent you from playing the game entirely, might be why top laners rarely roam. So to Adress the argument of why Jax is op, I can tell you a couple of things about him. Jax laning phase, although pretty solid levels 1 and 2, falls off very hard until 6. As I already said, if the enemy is smart and picks a ranged lane bully or a cheesy cc bot, they can completely shut Jax out of laning phase and leave him 1/5/0 or with 20cs at 15min. Even after he gets his ult, you can't try to tell me fioras ult or swains ult aren't stronger. And to Adress the scaling argument, just pick a tank or an even better scaler. Honestly, it's not that hard, there are better scaling top laners which also perform better in lane. All tanks beat Jax after they get ninja tabi and bramble vest, and tanks scale better too. Mordekaiser scales very well, so does vayne. All very good during laning phase and scale just as well, if not better.

His name was Saijax, and the full story is in the lol universe page, though I forgot what it was called. When Icathian mages accidentally unleashed the void to defend against Shurima, he escaped with a few others, sworn to prevent the void from ever being released again. It's actually a pretty depressing tale, with the only thing Jax kept from his old life being his love for a good, hard boiled egg, and his legendary fighting prowess
