Women suffering still present in today's India also, the sufferings of Rukmani represent the actual truth of the 10th century India. But still she is a strong woman who tolerate all her troubles one by one . The male female contrast is also a theme in this novel. The character of kunthi represents the helplessness ,thats why she choosed the profession . The condition of factory labourer and the capitalist situation also reflect the condition of that time .🙏🙏Thank you ma'am you are gem for us ..lots of respect to you ..❤

The ending of Nectar in a Sieve is a poignant and open-ended conclusion to Rukmani's story, reflecting the cyclical nature of life and the resilience of the human spirit. As Rukmani and Nathan are forced to leave their land and seek a new life in the city, the novel comes full circle, mirroring the displacement and upheaval experienced by the villagers throughout the narrative. The final scene, where Rukmani deciphers ancient prophecies that reveal her family's doomed destiny, serves as a metaphor for the inescapable cycles of history and the repetitive patterns that shape individual lives. However, the ending also suggests a glimmer of hope, as Rukmani's unwavering spirit and her ability to find solace in nature and family endure despite the hardships she faces. The ambiguous conclusion leaves the reader to imagine Rukmani's future, emphasizing the ongoing struggle for survival and the universal human experience of adapting to change and loss.

In Nectar in a Sieve, the character of Dr. Kennington, commonly referred to as Kenny, is a British doctor who serves as an important figure in Rukmani's life and the village. He first meets Rukmani while attending to her dying mother, and their relationship evolves as he provides medical assistance to her and her family. Kenny is portrayed as compassionate yet frustrated by the poverty and fatalism he observes among the villagers. He helps Rukmani overcome her infertility, which deepens their bond and leads to speculation about the nature of their relationship. Despite his Western ideals and occasional harshness, Kenny's commitment to improving the villagers' health culminates in his efforts to build a hospital in the village, symbolizing his lasting impact on Rukmani's life and the community. His character embodies the complexities of colonial relationships, reflecting both the cultural divide and the potential for genuine connection amidst the struggles of rural life in India.

Thank you for sharing. Enjoyed the presentation. I live in Fiji and am 50 years old but read the novel when I was in Year 7. I realised later that the novel was taken by my older cousins who lived with us back then. It was their literature text for Year 11 at High School. Unfortunately our school system does not study this Novel any more. But thank you!

At the end of Nectar in a Sieve, Rukmani returns to her village with Puli after enduring significant hardships in the city, including the death of her husband, Nathan. Despite the material poverty that still surrounds her, the conclusion emphasizes familial bonds and emotional strength. Rukmani finds solace in her connection with Puli, whom she adopts as her son, and is welcomed back by her remaining family members, including her son Selvam and daughter-in-law Irawaddy. The novel closes on a note of tranquility, as Rukmani reflects on her life and the enduring love that has helped her navigate her struggles. This ending highlights the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of family, suggesting that even in the face of relentless suffering, there is hope and strength to be found in personal connections and the land itself.

It's actually quite interesting story n the narration was quite good. I do have a question though. I understand that the setting was during the colonial times but how does her accepting her tragic life make her colonized? Isnt it assumptious to think that she could have acted any differently. Most of her tragedy is based on something that she could not control like death or her children's life options, so she chooses to accept n move on. She ends with hope despite her tragic life so why colonised? I'll add a bit further that Selvam's idea of changing for the better is something that reflects perhaps the American dream, isn't that a better example of a colonised mindset n hence he is the one representing the colonised at the level of mind. Rukmani's rejection from start represents those that were against it and therefore colonised politically and economically. So, saying that Kenny represents the colonizer and Rukmani - the colonized is either in an incomplete statement or I might have missed the point. Would you please clarify it?
