Oh, that curtain rod trick is brilliant, thanks. Kudos to you or whoever discovered it. Rather than rolling pipe, I've been FOLDING my pipe around bare match, resulting in a kind of loop cross section, like a mesentery around intestines. I've been doing just a single thickness (once did double) and having the grain run crosswise, because the paper's easier to handle that way than axially off the roll, but I'm aware that doesn't result in a resistance to ripping, so I don't handle my shells via their leaders. The advantage to folding piping around match is that I can then cut the match first to the length I need, and don't have to thread it thru premade pipe. The disadvantage, besides the lack of strength, is that some glue gets on the match here and there, but this has not caused hangs. Still, if I can get that cafe rod, I'll have to try it.
@goodmaro4 жыл бұрын
However, a lot of curtain rod I'm familiar with that has that channel is SQUARE in cross section. Seems to me that could still be a pipe former, just wouldn't roll as easily.

IIRC, Robert, I got that curtain rod trick from a Best of the AFN volume way back when. It is a good tip. I typically like two lengths of blackmatch in a quickmatch leader, so I'll cut a length twice as long as needed, fold it in half, and then use a fish-wire through the V to pull the blackmatch through the match pipe. Works well for me.

Mr Gorski was wondering if you had a video on making flash bags for cylinder shells.
@kohnbonn97444 жыл бұрын
How does regular black match become quick match just by putting it in a paper tube? I'm new to fire working never tried anything just doing my due diligence and trying to understand things as best I can. I dont understand the science of why it starts burning so quick inside the tube.
@stumccabe3 жыл бұрын
I believe the burn rate increases dramatically with the pressure, so once the burn starts and produces gas, the pressure increases, increasing the rate of burning - sort of a chain reaction. Also the hot gases move through the tube rapidly increasing the temperature.
@CP-od7tr5 жыл бұрын
I'm confused. Why would the quick match burn faster in an enclosed tube? I would think the opposite. Constricted. Just wondering. Can someone explain? I see the results, but it just doesn't make sense to me. Thanks in advance. Ned your videos are awesome!
@nedgorski5 жыл бұрын
Chad,, the pipe is not too tight on the match. The flames and hot gasses rush down the pipe, lighting the blackmatch surface rapidly, almost instantaneously.

Ned, Have you gotten into making any cannon (time) fuse at all? I’m just wondering, would you just need to add sodium bicarbonate to the powder mix in different proportions to make the powder burn at a set speed after it’s wrapped and lacquered?
@nedgorski6 жыл бұрын
I have not gotten into that, CP, but there are folks in the fireworking hobbyist community who have tackled making fuse machines, and then fuse.
@instagib7835 жыл бұрын
Why do you use glue rather than tape to seal your paper tubes? Is it for biodegradability, or is it just personal preference?
@nedgorski5 жыл бұрын
Glue is just easy and quick, Inst.
@goodmaro4 жыл бұрын
There is a continuous process I've heard that some hobbyists use of spiral winding masking tape sticky side out into pipe. That may have been the inspiration for Sticky Match.

must it be 36 inch paper? can we use rolls of 24 inch?
@nedgorski8 жыл бұрын
Sure, you can use 24" wide paper. If you cut the 4.5" strips from it, you'll get 5 strips, plus a little left over, or you increase the width or your strips to 4.8". Good luck. n

Are you able to use Visco instead of black match
@nedgorski5 жыл бұрын
No, the flame won't propagate quickly down encased Visco fuse. A form of blackmatch has to be used to create quickmatch.
