Hey Scotty! ALMOST everything you said on here is spot on. I want to add a clarification though. At 1:20 you pointed at the date sticker on the battery. Here's the thing about that, that "date sticker" is ALSO referred to as a "rotation sticker". I worked with Interstate Batteries for 5 years. At the distributor I worked at, we were good at only ordering the amount we expected to sell in the next 30 days, so the batteries would always be "factory fresh". However, there are accounts where we'd leave a stock of batteries for them, and if they did not sell in 3 months, they would be ROTATED for fresh ones. The now 3mo old battery would come back to the distributor to be recharged overnight, and the next day it was put back as available inventory to sell but now featuring a ROTATION STICKER indicating the current month and year. Just as a general rule for warranty purposes, if no date/ rotation sticker is present, there is also the date stamp that is engraved on the battery by the factory when it rolled off the assembly line (all Johnson Controls-made batteries like Interstate, Optima, Motorcraft, Duralast, Autocraft, and others). It's usually a 5-digit alpha-numeric code but only the first 2 pertain to the date. Letter, and Number. Letter is A-L (first 12 letters, referring to the 12 months of the year), and the number is the year. So for example, a K5RUL, date code is K5, meaning November 2015. Other battery manufacturers use a different, but similar method for dating their batteries at the factory (EastPenn and Exide are the 2 other major players in the automotive battery game, and their subsequent umbrella brands all have their own dating system). So just keep that in mind! That date sticker isn't always pertaining to the actual age of the battery. Keep up the great work!

Just some other comments to contribute: 1. Most the US lead acid car batteries come from Johnson Controls. Even Optima. 2. Most of those Johnson Control batteries have a sliding scale in terms of cost and warranty. The performance mostly remains the same. So some batteries may cost more and feature a 5 year warranty, whereas others may be cheaper and only have a 3 year warranty. The battery is usually the same. I personally rather have a lower cost battery that might need replaced after 3 years if it’s $50 cheaper than a 5 year warranty battery. 3. If possible, borrow a battery tester and take it to the store with you so you can test the CCA rating. You want to see a CCA measurement which is 50 to 100 CCAs above the rating on the sticker.

While income and inflation have kept in balance, but there’s a reason 170 is more expensive today than 35 in the 70’s. An example, in the 70s a kid could pay for college working 15 hours a week at minimum wage. Now at a similar school, it would take 35. 35 is a fair amount of time to spend at work when you’re in college. Today they have none left over, whereas before they had half their paycheck still. Cars, homes, health insurance have all followed similar trends

One thing that you didn't address was battery terminal corrosion. The sealed top batteries vent very little corrosive gas, therefore the terminals seldom or never need cleaning. The conventional batteries spew gas acid all over the top, requiring frequent maintenance.

A good deep cycle battery will give you longest life. I have an Optima yellow 7 years and going strong. Just find the red model for your car, then find the yellow that is the same size/configuration. Or for any brand deep cycle, just needs to fit the mount/terminals, be similar size. They will not tell you the deep cycle is recommended, but it is a better choice. It will live though more discharges etc. Don't worry if it is a few amp lower rated, that is normal. It is still plenty of amps. These are among the most expensive batteries, but having to change them much less often makes it worth it.

Scotty.... for lead-acid car batteries in the US there 3 choices.... East Penn/Deka, Johnson Control and Exide.... I am not a spokesperson but I have been to the East Penn plant as a guest..... I can say this.... they didnt have anything negative to say about Johnson Control.... They couldnt say a nice word about Exide. I strongly recommend avoiding them. I heard somewhere that they are mainly a recycler at this point but their stuff is still out there (Tractor Supply was my most recent encounter).... Depend on battery types, some batteries that have chemical reaction which you cannot stop it..However can reverse the reaction.. using pulse repair mode on some of the smart charger function. I have three cars. My 720CCA batteries tooks 32 hrs to repair from SOH 86% to 100%. My 380 CCA battery took 4 hrs to bring SOH 90% to 100% and my 300CCA battery took 11 days to bring up from 47% to 100%. All are lead acid battery which subject to sulphate. So need to desulphate 2x a year for preventive maintenance

That vacuum seal battery idea is not older than Scotty realizes (like circa 1912 old). Scotty is correct on the long shelf life of that system. Ask any military history expert, there are sea mines that were placed in WW1 and are still dangerous today because the battery that detonates the mine is basically a lead acid battery but no acid, the acid is in a sealed glass envelope that is shattered when the mine touches a ship -> acid is released into the plates -> battery now has a charge -> powers the fuse -> BANG!.. blub blub blub. Simple, reliable, but indiscriminate, they'll blow up on any sufficiently hard contact... does not matter if it's a civilian vessel, medical ship (HMS Britannic), enemy ship, or even your own ships (problem since some mine laying boats were sunk before reporting where they dropped their mines). In a sense, they're too reliable, those mines are a danger more than 100 years later, some of the nations that fought that war no longer exist today (Austro-Hungarian empire for one). So yeah storing dry lead plates without acid has a LONG shelf life, like more than a century... not sure how many of them still exist but any that do are basically dangerous until they are set off because the dry plates and glass envelope will contain the acid and outlive everything else in the mine.

My wife killed a new battery within 1 year of purchasing it. I found out she was sitting in her car during lunch listening to the radio with the car key in the ignition position instead of the accessory position. The headlights and all the vent fans were running for about 45 min a day, 5 days a week. Regular car batteries are not meant to be deep-cycled and should remain above 90% charged at all times. I ended up installing an optima deep cycle battery in the car to idiot-proof it.

ricerust It depends on the use. If you're not abusing a regular car battery, and properly care for it (cleaning posts, adding water when needed, etc), an old fashion battery will last longer than an Optima. However, if you drain the battery below start voltage, and tend to ignore it, a high cycle, or deep cycle Optima will usually survive when the others don't.

I once had a sealed car battery and the vent which should release the pressure got blocked for some reason. I only realised the problem when I noticed that the dash and the information display goes blank when I cranking the engine. I measured the voltage and it was below 12 volts, next I checked the terminals which I then spotted a small hole which had been blown outwards on top of the battery which indicated the blocked vent. I had no choice but to replace the battery which cured the blank display problem during cranking. The faulty battery was only 15 months old.

All good info but a bit light in detail. 1. AGM batteries typically have fantastic power and charge to a slightly higher voltage then a flooded cell battery (the older style). They are also less prone to freezing and work better in colder climates. They also usually last longer. The acid is absorbed into basically a fiber glass sponge. They loose less acid because the glass mat helps pull heat out of the acid. Also they can be tipped and used on their sides. Only replace an AGM with another AGM, as an alternator made for one will cook a flooded cell over time and it will die faster because AGMs charge higher and faster. 2. Gel batteries. You will never see these starting an engine. They stop working below 32 F (0 C) and have very low cranking power. Like AGMs they loose very little acid. Also like AGMs they are more resistant to sulfation (the separation of sulfur crystals that cling to the lead plates). Basically the acid in these is more like jelly. They can be used on their sides. Typically these are used in like mobility scooters and stuff like that, but AGMs are getting so good, Gels are being replaced. But, you cannot put an AGM in where a Gel is used and visa versa, their charging schemes are totally different. 3. Flooded cells. Your old school battery. Most AGMs fall into a “dual purpose battery” so are good in cars with lots of power accessories. These are not. If you deep cycle (substantially discharge and recharge) these kinds, they will crap out pretty quick. But they are cheaper. Also they are not as good in cold weather. You can safely replace a flooded battery with an AGM no problem. Myths. Setting a battery on the ground will not discharge them anymore. Back when they were made of a hard rubber, it would because the rubber was somewhat porous. These days, plastic is used and doesn’t leak. As the acid seeps onto the ground through the casing, it would discharge the battery into the ground. In an engine, the heat typically would evaporate the acid in the porous case. Myth. Interstates are not good. Not really. Their plates are designed poorly, they are built in a factory in Mexico and have far higher crib deaths then East Penn or North Star batteries (both US made). East Penn batteries are found under the names of Deka and Duracell commonly. Also, they are overpriced. Black plastic in most batteries is recycled and very cheap. With interstate batteries (made by Johnson Controls) that are gray and green, you are paying extra for them to use virgin plastics that are no stronger. You are paying extra for looks on a part nobody sees. Better to buy a battery that has that extra bit of money out into its guts. Johnson Controls make Interstate, Optima, Everstart, and EverReady car batteries. I’ve also seen Optima battery’s literally blow their top (specifically the blue top deep cycles for some reason I never figured out). Also, while you get extra surface area with their spiral design, like Wendy’s and White Castle burgers, you get less overall lead because there are gaps inside between the spirals so they have less capacity overall. Finally, some tips. If you own a leisure vehicle like an ATV, motor cycle, or jet ski, buy a product called a Battery Tender. You’ll think me later. It will keep the batteries in good shape in the off season. Take the batteries inside where it doesn’t hit freezing and just move the battery tender from one battery to the next every month or so. If you can take the time, charge batteries slower, this leads to less sulfation and less acid evaporation. Those 50 amp chargers are okay in a pinch for very dead, very large batteries, but down use them often, and definitely don’t use them on small sports craft batteries, you’ll nuke them. While I’ve never seen the anticorrosive sprays work, the little felt pads that are a dollar do work, they prevent corrosion from eating into the body of the battery. The cleaner sprays do work too, but so will baking soda mixed in water. Power craft batteries can be bought in some stores unfilled. Often times you or an employee can fill these with acid to get them started. Keep in mind they might need a charge before they are ready to go. AGM batteries are best in power sport vehicles (ATVs, Motorcycles, etc) because they handle vibrations better then flooded cells. The glass mat packing helps the lead plates, which are actually a compressed powder, stay together better. You will easily get twice the lifespan out of these batteries then a flooded cell in these vehicles, especially if you use a Battery Tender or similar charger/maintainer. Also, if damaged in some way, batteries can explode, especially if they are badly overcharged. The charge breaks down the water into hydrogen and oxygen. So before hooking or unhooking batteries, air out the area first. Finally, if you are going through a battery more then every few years, check your charging system. Finally, you get what you pay for. I got a NorthStar AGM (~$300) in my parents F-150. It was two years old when a guy brought it into recycle but it worked fine. I payed the $10 core charge myself, dropped it in there in 2016, and it’s still going strong. Source: worked at a Batteries+Bulbs for three years.

George Funes Just be careful. Wear safety glasses and gloves when you do it. Clean the top of the battery with soapy water and rinse it off before removing the caps. Use distilled water only when filling it if it's low. Only fill each cell (hole) until the water touches the inner rim at its lowest point.

I work a lot with batteries (DIY home solar). FLA deep cycle are great...but, so much watering and off-gassing. I have three other power systems that run deep cycle AGM's (Trojan and Interstate Batteries). Both are beasts...esp in colder weather. Faster charge up times. For cars, the #1 purpose for the battery is to start the engine. FLA is cheap, but a high quality AGM starter battery is ideal. Deep cycle AGM is also an option for some applications. As for lithium...have to consider weight, under the hood temps, correct sizing, charging parameters, and costs. Thanks for the video...so many neglect their car's charging systems and go cheap.

Good video Scotty but i actually had this problem Yesterday (damn winter time) and i found out the hard way that not all car batterys are the same. I bought one for 50$ at Walmart and i couldnt get the positive side terminal to go on the battery it was too big. So i returned it and had the lady behind the counter look up in her book that told her exactly which battery i needed which cost me 125$. At least now my car starts right up like a champ now :)

Most regular passenger cars use the same 4 or 5 style of batteries so usually a whole shelf stock of those particular batteries will only be about 1-2 months old. At my work we get our shipment of batteries 1 MONTH after they were made; The sticker says 11/17, we would receive them on 12/17. If you have an uncommon group size it'll be best to search around for the newest battery.

Hey Scotty, thanks for your great vids, I've got a quick question here. Time to replace the battery on my 2005 volvo xc90 2.5T. The oem is an H6 type with 600cca and can find it only at the dealer. Other places like costco are offering batteries with a higher cca, like 760, 800 or even 900. Could you please suggest me what to do, is the higher cca dangerous for anything like starter motor or the alternator. Should I consider the agm battery since the oem is not, or I just do what is written in the manufacturer's book and replace it with the exact same one. Thank you very much in advance.
@gravemind6536
@gravemind6536 Жыл бұрын
Get one with higher CCA it will make the car start easier in winter and if anything put less stres on your motor and alternator. As for whether to get AGM or the older style get AGM it is not needed but will do no harm to anything in the car and the battery will probably last much longer since AGM batteries are designed to take far more stress as they are used in cars with stop/start technology. You will essentially be equiping a battery that is massively over specification for you car and it will live an easy life and probably last as long as the rest of the car give its a 2005.

Although he's right about flooded batteries potentially outlasting sealed batteries, I prefer the sealed battery because they are less likely to leak acid and rust out the battery tray. Batteries aren't cheap, but neither is autobody repair. Bang on regarding the LiFePO4 batteries though. Its the unsung workhorse of lithium batteries.

sulfation due to non charging, in a car you are charging it frequently.
@wvadam
@wvadam 5 жыл бұрын
Mr. Me, exactly right. These answers on youtube are vastly oversimplified and at worst you are buying a battery that has gone through 1 partial discharge cycle losing a few % per month. You charge it up full and the sulphate is transformed back into sulphuric acid, that's how the battery works every time. Is a battery that has been sitting on a shelf slightly worse than one that is brand new? yes but insignificantly so.

The factory batteries from any GM vehicle will last a longtime. My 2004 Cadillac battery lasted more than 8 years before it gave out (it even had the courtesy to die in my garage-so I just went and got a new battery and installed it myself). My 2009 Chevy Cobalt still has its original battery! (Original brakes at 80,000 miles too!) It is one of the most reliable vehicles I have ever owned, and I have owned cars from just about every major manufacturer except Toyota. I know lots of people love Toyotas, but I will tell you that, although GM has made some serious mistakes in its 110+ years of making cars, they know how to build them right when they choose to do so. I currently have a 2017 Chevy Suburban, and I can tell you this vehicle is built by people who care about quality.

Battery spill is $$$$ and can leave you stranded witch can be a 100 or 200 miles from pavement alone.

Yea, this what I've always done. If you have to buy a pre-filled battery, then look for quality reputation, and look for the manufacture date - but that is the LAST thing you do. This is also assuming you can do a little bit of research BEFORE purchasing. Get the GROUP number off your battery. That is the most important thing as it WILL match the battery to your year, make, model of car. Yes, it is wise to look up battery by your vehicle as well to make sure it does have the right group battery installed. THEN, after you know the GROUP. start looking for the BEST PRICE for a battery that has the BEST WARRNTY and the BEST CCA (Cold Cranking Amps). For example, say you need GROUP XYX50 (made up). You can consult Consumer Reports for their recommendation first. OR just check some of the major manufacturers and chains (surprise, there are only a FEW actual battery manufacturers in the world). If you find a battery from Company A that costs $110. it has 350 CCA and has an 18-month full replacement, and 36 month pro-rate. I assume you know what pro-rate is. OK, now Compan B has a 380 CCA battery, 24 month full replacement and 48 month pro rate. Company C has an $85 battery, 375 CCA and 30 month full replacement and 36 month pro rate. Company D has a $120 battery, 400 CCA and 48 month full replacement. I would get the "D" battery. Kinda simple when you break it down. ONLY after you've selected a battery for purchase, CHECK THE DATE at the store.
