Just a thought. Black Box had to develop skate., Prostreet, Undercover, Skate 2, Skate 3, NFS World (and its updates) AND NFS The Run, with the team split up most of the time with horrid working conditions from 2007 to 2011. Yeah. And FireBrand didn’t have an easy time either, they had to develop Undercover, GRID, TrackMania DS, DiRT 2, TrackMania Turbo (2011) learn how to code for the 3DS, AND make NFS The Run from 2008 to 2011. Only on portables btw, I’m not talking about the Wii games they made on that timespan. More respect on their name please!

Wonderful vid! I always found it fascinating how developers work around the Wii's... unique control scheme to say the least. There's so many hidden gems in there as a lot of them were able to go all out as they'd only be focusing on the Wii with it's limited capabilities, rather than having to develop for one of the big consoles or PC. That limited scope, and unique platform breeds a lot of cool experiences and experimentation, as there is no possible way to make a direct port (at least usually!). This however... why... why a DS game on a home console...

I had the Wii ports of both Hot Pursuit and The Run(s), but I definitely put more hours into the former than the latter. A lot of that had to do with Hot Pursuit having split screen, and I don't think The Run did iirc. I played Hot Pursuit a lot with my brother. He wasn't as into cars as I was, but of all the racing games we had growing up, Hot Pursuit for the Wii was probably the one that got the most buy-in from him, although Hot Pursuit 2 for PS2 happens to be in that conversation as well. His go-to car was the Koenigsegg CCXR, and I would normally choose a Zonda Cinque or Reventón from that same class to race him, but one time I finished ahead of him and his Koenigsegg in a Porsche Panamera around one of the Las Vegas tracks (didn't win overall, because the AI carset is determined by the highest car class selected by a player, and I wasn't beating *ALL* of those hypercars in a big luxury sedan), and that's an achievement I'm still proud of to this day. I also had Ferrari Challenge for the Wii *and* the DS, maybe even the PS3 version at some point, I don't remember. What I do remember from that game is that there was some artistic license taken with some of the real-world circuits. Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve had a different name, and they made the Fontana, California track a lot more forested than in real life. It looked more like northern California than southern California.

The main version of The Run is in my opinion the most underrated racing game. It's not the best NFS but it is not the heap of shit everyone says it is. Some of my favourite set pieces in all racing games are from the main The Run. It's a crying shame we never got another game like it. It really is unique in a genre that is getting more and more homogenous as time goes on.

I replayed it recently, was wholly unimpressed. Driving felt terrible and boils down to press drift button to turn, the story is a cringey mess, and the shoe horned quick time events ripped you right back out of the game whenever you started getting into it. The original most wanted, carbon and underground 2 still feel amazing to play though.
@MrScottyTayАй бұрын
@@Lolwutfordawin drift turning can be pretty fun, like in the Hot Pursuit remake. The PS2 era was definitely amazing and the peak of the series but I still think the criterion/black box games were also fantastic, just for different reasons. We don't really get set pieces in racing anymore, even Forza Horizon turned theirs down a big notch over the years and their's were never the likes of The Run, Split/Second or Motorstorm Apocalypse to begin with That final leg of the race in The Run is unforgettable.

where exactly did you get the idea that the game was in active development for 3 whole years? 3 years between Undercover and The Run doesn't mean they were working on it from the moment Undercover came out. There's also the fact that Blackbox were working on multiple games at once (like during Undercover's development.)
@thejuniormafiaАй бұрын
Blackbox developing many other titles is something I actually found out after I dropped the video (couldn't stop myself from researching still) and it's something I wish I'd covered. It does add a little more perspective. I guess my wording for the development window was a little off. Shortly after Undercover, Blackbox had developed the core ideas for The Run and then outsourced the IP, so Firebrand did have close to 3 years to work on the game, and also explains stuff like the continuity problems with the different storylines etc. Other than that you're absolutely right, I would've liked to have gotten the exact dates.
