Need For Speed: Unbound - Review (A Brilliant Arcade Racer!)

Also not a racing game player (but I do drive manual irl), and have nothing against arcade racers, but those cartoony effects and especially low-detail humans do not mesh at all with the realism they are going for for the cars and environment. Very jarring to my eye. I've yet to experience a racing/driving game with VR and wheel/pedals, so I'm curious if the mind gets tricked into feeling locomotion. Still think VR is the future of gaming though, and stuff like driving games and piloting games have always seemed like the best fit.

That's absolutely fair enough Jam. I mentioned those cartoony effects specifically because I KNEW some people would dislike them. Its gunna be a divisive element I think. I personally prefer more unrealistic racers so for me its fine, but I will admit, it does seem odd when compared to the almost photo-realistic envrionments. I wonder if they made the game completely normally and then before release said "oh god our game looks super generic, lets add cell shading to the humans and 2d effects to the cars to try and make it more uniquie". I dont know that for a fact but it does kinda seem that way. I do occasionally get motion sickness so I'm curious about VR and pedals etc too. I've never tried VR and I think its too expensive to find out that it makes me sick lol. Anyway, thanks a lot for watching the review, I know this wont be a popular one so every little helps😊👍🏻

I'm going to be more cynical and say they just didn't want to spend the time on creating models for humans. I'm guessing those take a lot more time than photo-scanning the relatively straightforward lines and curves of cars (or gasp, reusing assets they already have). I've only played VR a few times myself, at relative's house, and backpack type zombie shooter in a room at a small amusement park/facility. It's incredibly fun, if not just for the dual-wielding of guns and going full anime (or Equilibrium (2002), which is clearly just anime as well lol)! Haven't had the chance to try VR driving with wheel and pedals though!

I usually only do mainstream or triple A if I'm personally interested in the game or the publisher gives me a review code. No problem, I'm glad it was helpful! As far as I know, no you cant. I always turn off rumble, haptics, adaptive triggers and controller speaker stuff when I play games. However, I'm pretty sure the only DualSense support Unbound has is Haptic Feedback. I dont think you can use it as a steering wheel (gyro) or make use of the adaptive triggers either. Hope that clears it up for you and thanks for watching!😊 EDIT: Apparently, some people are saying it does have adaptive triggers but its very weak, to the point where some people are failing to notice it. As I said, I've never used it so I cant say but that's the situation right now👍🏻

A wonderful review, even more impressive coming from a non driving car gamer as your candid opinions were refreshing! I hear you on the unfortunate current gen music, I greatly prefer Heavy Metal myself & enjoyed the selection of tunes in the background, a shame that's not in the game. Once I obtain a 9th gen console I'm hot to get this in spite of the cringe factor!

Haha, thanks dude! Yea, I try to review it as I would any other game instead of from a car enthusiast point of view. I think it worked out OK lol. Yea, the music isnt to my tastes at all, I'm virtually all Metalcore now. I know some people dont like Tommy Vext but man, I love his new Lone Wolf album. Grand Theft Audio, Cancel The King and Hold The Line being great tracks. Funny you should mention the 9th Gen consoles, just yesterday my other gave me an early Xmas gift. She got me an Xbox Series X and said, "well now you can play more stuff and review more stuff". Gunna get that set up today😊. In regards to NFS:U, yea I reckon its worth a play if you have any interest in racers. Music wise, just turn it all off and put something on yourself in the background. Story wise, turn all voices off and keep subtitles on, that's my advice lol. Thanks for watching as always my friend, its appreciated it!

@Consoles Only Congrats on your new Series-X, it's a solid console which I will most likely obtain first as they're easy to acquire but in the end I want both it & the excellent PS5. Consoles Only for me as well as I prefer the simple plug in & play dynamic. I'm currently enjoying the new Megadeth album "The Sick, the Dying & the Dead", pretty good man.

like yourself I am just a casual fan of racing games, back in the day I used to like the Test Drive series. I do have Need for Speed Hot Pursuit remastered and Split/Second. As for real life I ditched the car for a motorcycle.

Oh man, Split/Second is one of my favourite racers of all time. Love that game and kinda wish it had a modern sequel! Also, I know its not cars but I loved the ATV game called PURE, have you played that one? The jumps and tricks were really cool. That's awesome about the bike, with my health I dont think I could ride one, at all. I can barely sit in the passenger side of a car to be honest lol. What bike did you get?

Oooooo, very nice indeed. I love Honda (bikes and cars). I know they aren't, you know, factually the best or anything, but my family has ALWAYS had Honda cars, ever since I was a small child. I kinda grew up with them and now I cant help but love them lol. I actually collect Hot Wheels cars but Honda only. I have a yellow S2000 and a blue Honda E next to me on the shelf as I type this lol (plus about 40 more).

I'm 42 and I don't drive either. I crash anything with wheels it's embarrassing really. But we both play games and can detect if a game is bad or good quality. I don't like the ps2 era looking people, the rest looks good though. I will buy it at some point.

Haha, well I've never tried so I dunno if I'd crash it but.... most likely lol. I mean, if my in-game driving is anything to go by lol. I personally dont mind the cel shaded human characters but it does kinda stand out. But yea, Its a solid open world arcade racer in my humble opinion, much better than I thought it'd be.
