The first thing that jumps out when starting Need for Speed Unbound is its vibrant art style. At a time when most other racing games are striving for photorealism, EA's latest distinguishes itself from the rest of the grid by adopting a stylized mix between reality and comic books. While its cars land on the side of realism, the characters behind the wheel are cel-shaded and its open world falls somewhere in between the two aesthetics. Vivid graffiti-style flourishes also pop up when you activate nitrous or fly off a ramp, and drifting kicks up colorful tire smoke that looks hand-drawn, with all of these effects punctuating the action with a unique sense of style.
There aren't any modern racing games that look quite like it, yet the rest of Unbound feels like a continuation of 2019's Need for Speed Heat. From the distinction between day and night races to the cat-and-mouse chase that occurs when you have to outrun the cops and make it to a safe house in order to bank your money. Unbound doesn't attempt to reinvent the wheel, but what's here maintains the series' recent quality, even if there are some wrong turns along the way.

Really enjoying this entry into the series! Definitely agree that the AI racers are woefully unbalanced and the cop chases are just way too frequent. Someone on the subreddit found that setting a GPS causes more cops to spawn on your route which is just maddening as you already spend more time watching the minimap instead of the road.

Thank you Criterion. All I have to say is, this game brings some of the feeling that I had as a kid playing the old ones. If that doesn't say much, I don't know what else to say. ALSOO CHANGE YOUR CONTROLLER DEADZONE!! The deadzone is set to 22% automatically for some reason. Lowing this will fix that issue with the steering response. 👍

People keep making that comparison, but it really doesn't look anything like Into the Spider-Verse, IMO. It looks more like those CGI cartoons and anime that were popular in the early 2000s. Spider-Verse is far more stylized and unique than this. This, and those shows I mentioned, were just kind of generic and cel-shaded.

I havent played NFS since rivals and oh my Unbound has me hooked! The effects have really grown on me and I love it! It's very fun and addicting. Personally I find the soundtrack to be a bit wack so I just put on some spotify while gamin. I will say the races can feel a bit repetitive but I think the cars and overall feel of the game make up for it. This is by far my favourite NFS so far!

@@Music-vr7sz Truly a shame but I pin that on the marketing, KZbin videos were good but weren't enough and although they dropped a decent amount of info it was hidden in a web page and it didn't answer people's worries like grip driving. There're also things that you can't know if you don't play, like how lively the city is and how much does that affect the game, the map single handedly makes the game an 8 instead of a 5~6 and is such a good thing this game had enough time to be developed and honestly if they update and try to solve some things that really could polish the game even more it can become a 9 for most, at the end of the day this game is causing some waves and everyone who has tried has enjoyed a great deal and is always recommending it so that could help let's just hope EA is patient enough and commits to this game.

The best part of Unbound is the included strategy of managing your money. Your choices matter, and making decisions on what cars, upgrades and events to risk it all on to end the week with enough money to enter the qualifiers gives the game play more urgency and player agency. That said, I always wait until the new NFS has been out a while before I pick it up on PC due to the mods. A lot of Heat's criticisms e.g. Reverse rubber banding AI, Overly aggressive police, etc. were fixed with mods that also add more realistic handling that puts the "brake to drift" physics to shame.

@@jankfloyd158 While Forza and NFS do things differently, the one thing that holds NFS back is the unpredictable handling that even many of the NFS community don't like. It's one thing to build a drift car and slide around corners, but another when you build a grip car, but are still sliding around corners, regardless. This is why many want more semi-realistic physics for the predictability alone.

This is easily the best NFS they've made since probably Hot Pursuit 2010 for me. It just feels so good to play. My only issue is the somewhat limited character creator and the inability to sculpt/adjust body mods for cars like they had all the way back in NFS Carbon. A lot of the spoilers just look way too lifted for my taste and there's no way to adjust them or even change the color of the spoiler individually. There's a lot of little adjustments they should make for a sequel but overall this new direction is a huge step up from recent years.

The game is really fun and has amazing visuals. Only criticism is how unforgiving the AI is. You'll have annoying obstacles wipe you out and the AI will give you barely any chances to catch up

If you wanted a good arcade racer pick up grid legends on sale. It has some issues like broken nemesis system , sponsor progression bug and late game grind to unlock a few events , but the game has 80 plus hours of single player content without counting the dlc and multiplayer.

I've been playing for over 30 hrs, just finished the 3rd qualifier and I have to say I really love the art style and the soundtrack is amazing but I cannot stand the handling model. It feels like its fighting itself trying to decide if your steering is a grip turn or a drift turn ,you end up going super wide and then immediately into a ultra tight drift so often in ways no car ever could turn and it really breaks the immersion even in an arcade racer. The AI problems are palpable especially when the game tracks your distance to opponents and you're boosting but they're still exactly the same distance ahead of you after you've drained the whole NOS tank. Coupled with the fact cars feel artificially slow when you're not boosting makes driving in the game really weird. Not to mention late in the game every car is speed limited to 245mph even though many of them can go faster IRL... like what are we even upgrading for?

this is why you make changes in the handling tuning settings to change the sliders to specify weither the car will handle purely drift or grip because by default its set to a mix of both, thus why you having trouble doing either. Setting the handling to be either full drift or full grip will solve those handling issues.

It sounds like you're only drifting using the hand brake. There's 3 ways to break into a drift, tapping gas, tapping brake, and tapping handbrake. Tapping gas while turning at high speed is the best way to ease into wider drifts, the normal brake is like a middle ground, and the handbrake is only for really sharp turns. It's not like GTA driving where you just use the handbrake to drift practically 100% of the time.

I'm a fan of racing games, arcade, simcade, sim, you name it. I just finished Heat on XSX, I was impressed with the gameplay. If Unbound is as good, I'll be pleased. I like the fact the AI seems hard in Unbound, whether it's other racers or the police. Makes me work harder and be a better driver. I'm happy it runs at 60 fps on XSX, which to me is a must in this current gen. I am so looking forward to playing this game. It's going to be a blast.

I don't understand why NFS hasn't been able to recapture the magic of Underground 2 and Most Wanted after so many attempts. Their handling model has been consistently plagued by understeer for the better part of the past 15 years. I really don't enjoy racing against AI drivers who blatantly cheat, cops that spawn on top of you, and vehicle health meters that discourage getting into scraps during cop chases while they use their own cars as disposable missiles.

Yea the cops are way too cheap in unbound. The go from 0-200 in 3 seconds and are all over you day and night constantly. You will get away from them most of the time but it’s annoying to get into a chase every time you leave your garage.

This is the first time since Rivals that Criterion actually developed a NFS game, and once game it clearly shows that Criterion is lot more talented than Ghost Games when it comes to NFS, I'm really happy that the development for the NFS games is now reverted back to Criterion, just like in the late 2000s-early 2010s.

The structure of this game sounds so fun, but when I downloaded it through EA Play preview on Game Pass (or whatever it's called), I was really disappointed with the handling/physics. I do prefer sims in general, but I find games like Forza Horizon and Dirt 5 to be fun enough to play with a controller. This game structure would incentivize sitting back and playing a racing game with a controller (whereas typically a wheel is necessary to make car games compelling for a long time). However, it just felt so... fake, and the events seemed designed for chaos instead of racing. However, I didn't realize there was a grip slider you could tune towards and (at least in the description here) make the car behave a little more like a car. It felt like the game was forcing me to slow down by drifting, then use boost on the straights. I dunno if I'll download again and try the "grip" style of driving.

I never ran into the problems the reviewer was having. Bumped the car up to Street Level and carried on day and night. Performance first before Style. The game might be easier if you drive in First Person mode. I didn't really play in 3rd Person.

The reason I DON'T BUY NFS now is mainly because of the handling physics. I grew up with NFS and had a blast back then and gradually starting to dislike this style of handling physics with the new installments. I'm sure some of you have the same opinion on this. Doesn't matter whatever the cartoonish animations they wanna add but for me in my 30s this is no longer fun and I find this handling to be extremely annoying. So I stick with other racing games that does the driving physics well

For what it is, there’s really not a whole lot the devs can do with the franchise to mix things up. Overall I’m enjoying my play through but I can’t help to feel something is missing. I kind of wish they would have leaned more into the cop chases and made the world more interactive kind of like most wanted with all the environmental traps you can use against the police. It's funny how this reviewer who doesn't seem to have much experience with NFS playing on Easy says the AI is hard, cops and racers alike, but then veterans like me or for a more valuable reference BlackPanthaa find the game a little bit on the easy side. I did the 10h trial of EA Play and jumped straight to the hardest difficulty, first races getting used to handling and nitrous getting 3rd place minimum and enjoying the challenge, then after I started upgrading and got the handling right I was straight zooming throughout the map, even got away at critical health with repair on cooldown of a Heat 5 chase in an A Class car while sweating buckets lol Super recommended game, super fun and actually want to keep playing A LOT more. Fun fact with Heat I just finished the story and never returned, the game never actually made me feel excited and that was so disheartening because my favorite game of all time is NFS

Well the heat 5 chases can definitely get intense. Although only with a A class or lower car. And escaping is more about cheesing the Ai rather than good driving

@@MONTR65 Somewhat what it did, stayed in the same street block lapping it drifting and boosting till the cooldown was low enough and then went to the gas station and after that I used all the jumps I could find to lose them

This is the first NFS game i truly enjoyed in a long time. Went into this game with very low expectations but i came out surprised. Story is well.. it's a story lol definitely forgettable but it least it's not a fast and furious knock off. And cops are way less brutal then NFS Heat. Definitely recommend this game on a discount

I don't know if the cop stuff is really annoying...maybe in that vein, they were going for realism(?). I imagine it would be crazy hard to evade the police in real life.

I'll be playing this game. Currently with Heat on XSX but quite juddery at 30fps. Outbound looks much smother and faster at 60fps, like Hot Pursuit Remastered, my favourite NFS. I wish Ghost would release an update to boost the framerste on Heat, would be epic.

They should have just added these small details to NFS Heat. Pedestrians on the sidewalks. New cars! and graphic details. I personally hate that drift smoke in Unbound. I'm not 10 years old anymore lol. Overall Heat is better game for the boys!
