Need help choosing a suitable personal representative?
Hi, everybody. I'm Elsa W. Smith,
your Maryland estate planning and probate attorney
empowering women through estate planning.
I often hear this question from potential clients.
That is, how can I start the estate planning process
if I don't have a clear choice
for a personal representative?
Now, without the right guidance
this uncertainty can really stall their progress.
In this video, I'm going to share four tips
to help you move forward with your estate plan.
Now, if you want more content like this

Now let's get to it.
Tip number one, understand the role.
Let's talk about understanding the role of a personal representative,
also known as an executor.
This person is responsible for managing your estate,
which includes paying debts,
taxes and distributing assets according to your will.
It's crucial to choose someone who is trustworthy,
organized
and capable of handling these responsibilities effectively.
Tip number two, consider professional help.
If you don't have a friend or a family member who can serve as your personal representative,
consider hiring a professional.
Professionals like attorneys,
accountants, corporate fiduciaries, and such can step in.
They bring a high level of expertise and impartiality to the role
and that ensures that your estate is managed smoothly.
Tip number three, evaluate potential candidates.
Think about the people you trust, even if they are not immediate family members
friends, distant relatives or colleagues might be potentials.
The key is to ensure that the person you choose is both willing
and able to take on the responsibilities of managing your estate.
And tip four, discuss with your personal representatives.
Have an open discussion and conversation with potential candidates.
This discussion ensures that they understand what's involved
and are willing to take on the role.
It's important that they are fully informed and agree to serve as your personal representative.
Now you don't have to do this alone.
We help people just like you who are
struggling to get their estate plan in order
and I invite you to take the next step in securing your legacy
by scheduling a
complimentary fifteen-minute call with a member of our team.
The link will be in the comments.
