Nice one Joe, you should do this for a living! 🙂 Glad you covered making sure states of charge should be similar - this worries me in case someone connects an empty battery to a fully charged one. (I've had copper vapor flash burns a couple of times from shorts!) I think some manufacturers might mediate and equalize the charge gently and then engage relays or mosfets to make a hard connection, but that would add expense and extra resistance so I wouldn't count on it.

It’s a very neat system. If it stacked from the bottom (controller at the bottom) adding more batteries would be a lot easier. Useful to see how to add batteries but I’d have thought anyone willing to spend that much money would have it installed professionally.
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 6 ай бұрын
Yeah thats true! Having the controller at the bottom would make it easier. I think they would want to make that box a little stronger lol, its pretty light. Yeah this is a UL certified system so it can 100% be installed by a professional or installer.

True, but that would make reading the screen REALLY hard, and doing settings. So long as your phone app is working OK, not a big deal, but....

Having a 6 sever rack battery system in a large wheeled case, I have to say I’m a little jealous of all the extra free space you get with a wall mount battery system like this one. This system still gives you some redundancy in case one battery fails. You just pull it out. 🤩👍☀️⚡️

My first system was in a server rack and it took up so much space. Main reason I mounted my next diy battery(not finished) on the wall. I really like the wall mounted stuff!🤘

Nice install really neat. I have a question: With the new battery installed, why you didn't add second pair of power cables to the inverter?
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 6 ай бұрын
Great question. Id like to find some bigger flex conduit but didnt want to buy a whole roll for 2-3ft. The battery cables are 1/0 as well so I will be good for a bit! I also want to test out some other batteries I have here.

Seems like a lot of wall space for only 300Ah but I suppose most of these smaller stackable battery modules take up quite a bit of wall space compared to a server rack full of 280-304Ah batteries.

They are basically server rack batteries mounted on there side or on the wall to get away from the big server rack.

Can an ethos battery backup work with sun power micro inverter panels?
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 4 ай бұрын
Yeah you can connect existing or new AC coupled solar system to the generator input on the inverter. Whats great about that is you can have grid tie AND battery backup!👍

@@AveRage_Joe thanks, due to Sunpower’s financial situation I am having trouble getting them to okay installing the ethos system without voiding my warranty. They tell me that I would need to have their sub contractor do the installation but the contractor is leaving sunpower due to their financial problems. Love watching your videos
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 4 ай бұрын
What do you mean by financial issues and also why would there be an issue connecting panels to a inverter unless they did it. Or is sunpower a different company then I am thinking?
@Skookman
@Skookman 4 ай бұрын
@@AveRage_Joe SunPower has been around 40 years. Their panels come with micro inverters, good warranties, and are supposed to some of the best panels available. I live in Southern California but I think SunPower is national. I got a customer email from my installer. “Renova Energy “ the email said that their partner SunPower was having money issues and that Renova was temporarily down and not doing any business. They needed to reorganize but would be back. I googled SunPower and it appears they are struggling paying their bills. They were late reporting their income and stock price has tumbled. Getting information from SunPower has been hard. I call, they tell me someone will call me back but they don’t. Somewhere I read that my warranty is with the panel manufacturer. I’m not sure who that is but am looking into it. It seems wrong to me that I would void my warranty if I installed a battery backup without using SunPower’s systems and or their approved installation contractor. But as of now, the best I have got is an email from SunPower saying that I could use another brand but would need their contractor to install it. The insinuation being that the contractor would know if it was compatible with my panels. I realize how stupid that is but that is what I am up against.

We can all make cheap batteries with the skills we have acquired over the years, but what we often forget that our time also has a price! I still have 1000 good 18650s that I haven't managed to find the time to make a 13 or 14S pack out of, and am too busy working or sleeping to expect to be able to, so will probably go for a system such as this when prices come down a bit more. If you can do it, then go for it, but there are also people that want to just buy a system which is also supported and has a guarantee - and that's important if your house is on the line!

Clean and Nice install! Is the 15kwh the nominal or usable capacity? What is the recommended DOD of this battery?
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 6 ай бұрын
Yeah it is! I actually havent done a full capacity test yet. Recommended from the manual it says down to 20% can exceed 6000 cycles (lifespan of over 10 years and is engineered to withstand more than 4000- 8000 cycles at 80% Depth of Discharge (DOD) at a rate of 0.5C)

We gotter done and yes, it went well. I would for sure get a 3 stack and go from there. I am by no means trying to upsell. Depending on what you plan to do. Off grid or as a backup. If your house gets sun on the panels early to start charging. Your golden. I dont get sun on my panels till noon due to trees. If we dont run the AC, 15kWh will get us through the night. If we use the AC....not even close lol our house is drafty and poorly insulated🤭😁

So if I lose power how long would they be able to run both freeze and lights and tv without worrying?
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 6 ай бұрын
Batteries running them only and no solar? My fridge uses 1.7 to 2kWh a day. Led lights and tv are usually pretty low consumption. I dont know how much your 2 frezzers use but just throwing out a guess, Id say 3 days.
@jamesroyal8331

Of course when the grid is gone I would imagine you would not open the freezers as much and or conserve a little. If you had some solar coming in then much much longer.

You are right if the UTP cables are not shielded and they are near of AC power cables, but DC power cables do not make any electromagnetic fields, so UTP cables will not be affected. Regards

I guess it only could be a backup. 15 kilowatches, but half the power you use. If you have a 100% of your house underneath electricity, I'm not just playing a light bear of everything. Cause I do believe more people like you use more power than that and engage time. Cause you still hook up to the power line. A person like me don't have that option..
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe 6 ай бұрын
Yeah I use more then 15k. If we are in the spring or fall, we could survive on 15k. Once we turn on the AC....Game over lol Yes we do have the grid as a backup.
