One little trick with 35mm film is that as long as you have some leader sticking out, you can start loading in full light. You will have lost a good bit of the leader anyways when you loaded it in your camera. So you have about that much play to work with. Cut the leader in light, making sure you cut between sprocket holes and start to load, getting the film seated. Then throw it in your changing bag/tent and finish loading on the reel. More obvious when you get to the end too as it will come to a firm stop. Then just cut near the canister. An added bonus is you didn't destroy the canister so you can use it for bulk film loading later

when you're bulk loading, do you attach the loaded to the cut end of the donor canister?

And your phone, I've never had an issue while loading film but someone did call me once when I was doing darkroom printing so the whole room lit up, thankfully the only paper I had out was already in the fixer at that point.
