Thank you for the explanation. It's the first time that a teacher has explained the grammatical function of the word "What" to me, in the question like "What do you need?". Now, I know that it's a direct object of the verb "need" or an object of the infinitive complementing the verb "need". When asked, some teachers answered that the "What" was a "question word", which I have always taken as an inadequate one.
