I've been working on a fairytale pumpkin today and came back to revisit the stem. I plan to make more of these, especially when I receive some of the new colors in my order. i missed the live feed, but am ready to make pumpkins, can you use scrap fibers to make the inner pumpkin or will it be too soft

You can, just roll it very tight to start! As long as your inner core is firm, building up firm layers is easier. Even if you start with a ping ball size, make that FIRM, and layer by layer you can keep it firm :) d
