I've read about the reason why diabel didn't drink the potion, its because the damage he received is too fatal and the reason he's still alive is because the animation of his hp bar going down.. Progressive is easily my favorite iteration of SAO, SAO being my fav anime. a few things though. The first volume of the SAO Progressive Light Novels released back in 2012, a little while after the release of season 1. As of right now there are a total of 8 volumes. The original Aincrad arc skipped over a lot of the floors while this series goes floor by floor. Mito is a characters made specifically for the movies. She doesn't exist in any of the novels of the original SAO or the SAOP novels. Also...Diavel refusing to drink the potion is an anime problem XD both in season 1 and in this movie. In the novels Kirito wasn't near him with a potion in hand, he was protecting asuna in case Illfang decided to continue his oonga boonga onslaught.

A lot of this is based on the progressive novels which is the original writer going back and making the story better since his writing has improved since he started SAO original.

The SAO that anime adapted is already what you described - he rewrote his web novels into light novels that got adapted into anime. Said anime already included a portion of Progressive because it is a prequel in the making. There were a few prequel stories in the main series, and he finally decided to separate it. As more was written - they decided to do a second anime adaptation, this time as movies. Basically, you mixed up two different facts

About the guy dying for denying the potion, I like to think that the damage he received was greater damage than the potion's healing power. for example he received an attack worth 5 thousand but the potion then healed 3 thousand, so it would be desperate for him to use a potion that could save someone else. and everyone who resets their hp has a few seconds before at least the important characters in the anime disappear. But I might be talking nonsense since I haven't read the book yet

The original SAO was published as a novel for a newbie contest, the original only had one chapter, so there wasn't time to develop as much about the stories and stories of the others characters, which is why the 1st season seems rushed SAO was the winning novel of that contest and was very well received, which is why it was continued as a "real" novel But as the original SAO became very popular, the author decided to create Progressive, which tells about what happened on the floors without rushing, so there are several changes, despite many people don't consider it canonical, you can simply take the 1st season as a vague story that you heard and the progressive as if you were actually watching that story

Not exactly - the author went over the page limit of the rules to participate, and instead of cutting it down decided *not* to participate at all. Instead he began expanding the story as a webnovel for years. Said years later he tried to participate in context again, creating Accel World, winning and then as a side effect, his SAO was read by editor and decided to be published alongside AW. Since the beginning, author kept on adding new stories in Aincrad arc he long since made sequels for. Eventually, he was asked to make yet another for 2nd episode of anime. He again went overboard with the size, so part was animated and with the rest he finally decided to separate the prequels into more direct series of its own - SAO Progressive. It is canon to the mainline books since around volume 8-9, and we have 20+ of them, so acknowledging the events of Progressive. So it is part of the universe for more story than not. Retcons are unavoidable at this scale. What isn't canon, is Mito for the novels - she's anime-only and if ever be added into books, she'll be changed a lot.

I think it's importantt hat they are adding these characters to these movies, because 1: These characters don't appear in the Original SAO novel,s but they appear in the new Progressive ones, Kawahara is adding them to the past since its more complex and in=depth than the first three novels I think. But more than that: These characters start appearing in the arc after Alicization, which is Unital Ring. Which means it's important that we get acquanted with them now.

For clarification, Mito is not a character in the main canon. Progressive is technically not canon, certain aspects are how the canon went (like Asuna following after Kirito and joining him for a while after the 1st floor boss), but stuff involving Mito for example are not. The Progressive movies are fully canon only to the Progressive novels, which are basically reimaginings of the main canon. So Main and Progressive canons both exist but are separate and have differences.

Progressive so badly broke the original plot, but the writers of this anime went even further and broke the logic of the plot even in their work. In the original, Asuna tastes delicious food for the first time when Kirito treats her to cream. And in this anime, Asuna clearly tried delicious food with Mito, but for some reason they left the scene with the bun and cream. It's the same with working in a party. How she and her friend worked in a party and didn’t know about the health bars of a party member. The Progressive in the light novel is wonderful, it really makes the world of SAO much deeper and more interesting. Why it was necessary to add another gag to the anime is completely unclear. By the way, the second movie based on Progressive is, in my opinion, very good, probably because it is closer to the original source.

The fact that Unital Ring erased OG Aincrad and replaced it with Progressive will become quite complicated for some people once the next Arc gets animated.

Events of Progressive has been mentioned all throughout Alicization novels, and a book prior to that had a story from which SAOP tooks of... So less than the first third of the main series was published without acknowledgment of SAOP, UR isn't special about it. And erased nothing, as the only retcons the books did as a prequel are of a couple of lines that are only in Kirito's thoughts so you wouldn't even know if you only seen the anime.

Progressive is not the original show, Mito were the new character !! This Progressive series is like a alternate timeline where Asuna have a friend and got invited in to play with her friend ! On the original show, she got stuck in this game because she want to escape her (i'm sorry) bullshit mama. Away from her mother's control ! And Asuna were split away from Kirito up until they're reach level 35, then they meet again, solving the "safe zone enable murdering" case like what we see on the original show ! But on this Progressive story, A-chan stick with Blackie whole the time and explore Aincrad with him !! Mito got added on making the story very different, because now we have a female version of Kirito ! YES, Mito were as dangerous as Kirito in term of skills ! Not just a fellow beta-tester, but she also a powerful player too !

Something to note, since I noticed that you got confused a lot about Mito and Kirito and Asuna meeting before the raid meeting. SAO Progressive is essentially a complete rewrite of SAO, so there are a lot of differences between the original series and Progressive.

SAO Progressive has never been a rewrite, it's a prequel that is acknowledged by the main novels. It has not a single overlapping event, and on a few occasions indicates that these books are just description of the past events. So classical prequel with a couple of small retcons that you wouldn't notice unless you read a couple small lines in like 2 older books. The only reason you see same events in anime twice, is because it adapted same story twice via this movie. Episode 2 season 1 was already adapting SAOP story as part of main canon. Mito on another hand - is not canon to the books.

The original SAO was over with the Aincrad arc as basically a finished story. Progressive was written to fill in the gaps that were left in the original, so while the entirety of it is not a rewrite, at the very least, the first floor is. So at least for this movie it is a rewrite of a rewrite.
