👉 Quality Index 1/5
This is from the horrible Season 1 DVD Release of Voyager and is more or less the worst-case-scenario for a restauration. Consider this clip the minimum quality one might get during a full remastering of the series with our method. We will showcase scenes from later Seasons with much better quality soon.
👉 What exactly is this clip?
A heavily processed clip from Star Trek: Voyager, edited and upscaled to true Full-HD 1080p resolution using an extensive AI supported process. It is neither endorsed or supported by Paramount Home Entertainment and is based off the original DVD-Release of Voyager to showcase, what fans of the series can do in terms of restauration.
@Paramount/CBS: We CAN bring Voyager to Full-HD glory if you let us. Contact us if you're interested.
👉 Why is this so impressive?
Because it is based off the original DVD Release of Voyager that itself was crippeld by bad compression and mastering errors. Just imagine, what we could do, if we had proper access to the uncompressed standard definition video files on what the DVDs are based on.
If you do not find this video so impressive after all please take a look at the following screenshot comparison:
👉 Original DVD Release: i.ibb.co/9nDtT7v/001003118.jpg
👉 After Processing: i.ibb.co/jzQ7WGt/003124.png
Please also note, that KZbin uses HEAVY compression to save bandwidth, so this clip's quality is being reduced sigificantly just by uploading it to KZbin.

👉 Serious AI Processing with:
► Seperation of an episode into Film and Non-Film (CGI) sequences
► field matching to recover the original progressive frames
► De-Interlace with advanced filtering
► Denoising with temporal denoise filters while retaining micro detail as possible
► Deblocking and presharpening
► Upscaling with AI

I 😭 when Neelix said that amazing emotional speech to Jetrel. Neelix: That's a sad story, Jetrel, but let me tell you another one. A man goes back to Rinax after the Cascade. Back to what had been his home, to look for survivors. But the impact of the blast has set off hundreds of fires, and there's nothing there. Just smouldering ruins and the stench of seared flesh. But in the distance, in the middle of all that emptiness, from out of this huge cloud of billowing dust, he can see bodies moving, whimpering, coming toward him. They're monsters, their flesh horribly charred, the colour of shale. One of them comes toward him, mangled arms outstretched, and he can't help it, he turns away frightened. But then the thing speaks and he knows by the sound of her voice that she's not a monster at all, but a child. But a little girl. 😭 Jetrel: (Feeling Guilt) Mister Neelix, I... Neelix: Her name was Palaxia. We brought her back to Talax with the other survivors. Over the next few weeks I stayed at her bedside and watched her wither away. Those are consequences, Doctor Jetrel.

What an amazing scene. I don’t think I’ve ever cried at this before but I really paid attention to Phillips’ performance and the sweeping score wonderfully elevated the emotion of the moment. Neelix may be goofy but he has real depth and Ethan Phillips is a superb actor.

James Sloyan (who played Jetrel) is such a great character actor. One of those actors who you recognize right away when you see him on the screen. He had such great guest appearances in the Star Trek Franchise, this was his best appearance out of the four he did in TNG, DS9 and VOY.

Neelix is such a good character because he’s broken. He’s a broken and traumatised man who stays cheerful to others, so others can go through the pain he feels better. Jetrel and Mortal Coil are the best Neelix episodes
@garnauklaufen6704
@garnauklaufen6704 3 ай бұрын
He is not broken, and if this kind of background was allways the premise of the character (and not just something added for this episode), then that's the point. Yes, he may have suffered from traumatic events, but he does not let them determine the rest of his life or take away his ability to be cheerful. (That is one of the reasons why classic Star Trek was much better then the newer stuff, that presents characters who really are broken and mere victims of their own lives rather than agents.)

This is Voyager's answer to DS9's "Duet" and it comes pretty darn close to the same raw emotional power. Ethan Phillips and James Sloyan give absolutely STELLAR performances that Voyager rarely had. "Jetrel" is one of the episodes I use to argue that the first two season of Voyager were actually its best.

Its remarkable the impact music has on a scene, how emotive it can make the moment, be it sadness, suspense, horror, anger.....whatever! As passionate as Neelix's monologue is, I feel its impact would be significantly less, without the music accompanying it.

I'm watching through Voyager through to completion for the first time with my wife, and I genuinely dont get the Neelix hate. Yes he is a bit too saccharine at times, but unlike other insufferable goofy sidekick characters (like Jar Jar, for example), he has depth, burying his pain with excessive kindness for his crew. He is insecure about his place with his newfound family, but continuously demonstrates consistent use when under the gun, alongside emotional maturity when the situation calls for it. He has cowardly tendencies but overcomes them when it counts, like when he ran across active fire to save Kess when she was possessed. I find him to be a solid character, a "goofy sidekick" done mostly right. Honestly the only thing that genuinely annoyed me about him was his petty jealousy over Kess, but even then considering how gracefully he took being broken up with somewhat redeemed that part of him for me.

On subsequent rewatches, I hated Neelix a lot less. Maybe time has marched on and my own perspectives have changed, but he wasn't a bad character, and had a lot of heartfelt moments in the show that I've grown to appreciate.

In the end, Jetrel wasn't necessarily *evil.* He was just a man who wanted to save the lives of his people. It was war, and the Talaxians were prepared to annihilate Jetrel's entire species. They no longer had the necessary manpower to keep up the fighting, nor enough ships left to have even the slightest chance of opposing the Talaxian fleet if it turned into a prolonged conflict. His people wanted to minimize casualties, and so they decided to go with a show of force so terrifying it would almost certainly result in Talaxian surrender without the weapon having to be used a second time.

Dr. Jetrel is right about science... If one person doesn't discover something some other person will. and then they will have to deal with the consequences. It really isn't his fault. We are likely coming up to a very similar situation with AI technology. We can stop now but we are only delaying the inevitable. We can stop but some one else will eventually pick up the research and start again. And in all honesty who would rather someone else have the gun than themselves? We can all use the technology for good or for bad. But if anyone is going to use it for bad, I'd rather be the first to find out how it could be done in self-defense.

They weren’t trying to copy anything. I don’t believe that. Besides, despite any similarities, every angle of the horrors of war and the feelings they cause to bring forth or be thrown in ways we’d never imagine possible otherwise should be focused on. They’re important, because war should never be. They say Hell is the most horrible place to be in the universe. But the only thing worse than Hell is war at home, where innocents aren’t always safe, even when everything is focused on the frontlines after a soldier returns home. Because they’ll likely lose something on the battlefield, whether it’s a body part or a part of their Humanity. At the very least, every time you kill somebody, something inside you dies along with them. Nobody should have to kill.
