I Love WIDE Lenses - My Thoughts on the Laowa 7.5mm

After two years of searching for a wide angle lens that works well with the micro four thirds system I think I've finally found it. I should probably mention that this video wasn't sponsored in any way.
In this video I talk about the lenses I've been using, why I purchased the Laowa. I also show examples of what the lens can do and why I love a big ole field of view.

Neemor's World thinking about getting the GH5. What lense would you recommend for all around use?

It depends mostly on what you will be shooting, but a couple lenses I would look into are: If you're looking for a single lens that does it all the 12-35 2.8 is pretty good. It is $1000 though. amzn.to/2LXpFIx might be able to find a used deal. We've rented that for events. If you're trying to spend $200 the 14mm 2.5 pancake lens is great too and that's what i used as my main lens for a couple years. amzn.to/2qTcLnt (almost all my talking head stuff from fall 2017 - fall of 2018 was shot with this) I paired the 14mm with an $80 35mm for when i needed tighter shots: amzn.to/2tjyh5H That being said, the great thing about m43 cameras is that you can put almost any lens on it with adapters, so the options are limitless and determined by what you're going to be shooting most. And there are thousands of inexpensive vintage lenses out there that are worth looking into. What i would keep in mind is that you're going to want fast lenses and investing in 2.8 or faster is worth it as the gh5 is not great above 1250iso.

You can change the preset manual lens focal lengths in the menu! If you go to the "change focal length" menu and touch one of the focal lengths listed below the setting range, it will stay highlighted yellow, then you pick your focal length above (7.5mm) and hit "Disp. Save" in the bottom left corner, then that will overwrite whatever focal length you have entered into the preset you have highlighted below! So I have 7.5mm, 25mm, and 35mm as my saved presets on my GH5!

I've just ordered the Panasonic G9. I was concerned that there would be a lack of wide angle options but the results with this lens are stunning.

Just started shooting with my copy. It's well centered and no production issues. It's a baby tank or brick - small and solid. Nice focus ring - not so nice aperture ring which is 'asymmetric' or non-linear. Also, the feel of aperture is soft clicking - so kinda worst of both worlds. Not tactile and not smooth. That said, the optics are really nice. I have not set up tripod shots and controlled f-stop tests yet. But I've shot enough wide open to 5.6 shots under different lighting conditions to know this one is not going back. Some stuff just makes me smile that dopey affectionate smile. This one is one of them. Takes me back to what got me into photography ~ 50 years ago. Fun perspectives, sharp and contrasty. Good street lens on a GX85. Good super-wide on a G9. Will report back on astrophotography once I get back to the dark, summer skies of Oregon soon. Mike

I just bought this lens. It arrives today. One thing I notice is the chromatic aberration on the edges. But honestly, for the price, it's a decent and very nice lens. I cannot wait to use it.

Not that much option in wide angle on mtf and I was initially turned off by the absence of electronic contact with the camera but after seeing your review I think i'll go for it. Its really great you illustrate with real life footage that is actually aesthetic and not just random shots inside your kitchen or backyard as too many you tubers do.. Keep up the good work

I hope you like the lens. It takes a while to get used to the restrictions of manual focus and iris but once you get the hang of the limitations it opens up more lens choices.

This was exactly the video I was looking for! I have the SLR Magic but was thinking of getting the Laowa too and either keep or sell the SLR. So, since you have both, I would kindly request you of making a comparative video (nothing too scientific really, just the same scenes shot with both lenses), so I can spot the differences and who knows, maybe keep both if I find that SLR has any special character that I can't get with the Laowa (or vice versa) Thanks!!

Hey I know this videos on the older side but would you happen to remember what profile settings you were using? I'm just going around checking out GH5 videos of people who use my same lens and I liked the way the details came out at the bridge. Especially for a youtube video where they somewhat ruin the quality.

Neemor, I’d love to hear your advice on filming on iPhones. Been using the X for the past year to film an AT Thru as well as countless visits to National Parks. Great video, but I would like to know how this lens handles night shots. I do a lot of low light photography with my Olympus OM-D E-M5/12-40mm f2.8 and the results are good when the exposures are long. Would the difference of 2.8 to 2.0 be enough to shorten the shutter speed?

They have one that's very similar for the EOS-M mount amzn.to/2std0Gj if i did the math right it should be about 0.5mm wider than my lens on my gh5. It is an f/2.8 though, so you do lose a little bit of light. but remember that it is fully manual, so you have to get used to hitting the focus if that's not something you do already. That being said I think the biggest strength of Canon is their auto focus and you would be giving that up when using a laowa lens.

Have you tried using in-body stabilization with this lens? During moving shots, I sometimes get warped or distorted corners with the Laowa and in-body stabilization with my G85. Dual IS with the G85 and 12-60 kit lens is really impressive. Do you think a gimbal is the only way to get decent handheld moving shots with the Laowa 7.5? Thanks for the videos!

I filmed all of this with IBS on and haven't noticed an issue after changing the IBS settings. a lot of the footage I filmed when I first got the lens did have bad warping because the IBS settings were set to 50mm, so the camera was trying to stabilize the wrong field of view. After I set my custom function profiles to turn on with 7.5mm the issue went away for me. Do you think that might be the problem?

@@NeemorsWorld They limit the setting to full mm (at least this is the case on my GX80). You can set 7mm or 8mm. But on the other hand, I think some warping can't be avoided. I have this warping on my GH5 too. If the sensor moves around, it isn't centered anymore. This as to lead to more or less uneven distortion, depending on the movement. I don't know if it is possible to correct the distortion of a lens completely including the additional distortion by the sensor movement but it is obviously impossible to do it on a non native lens that doesn't tell the camera what kind of lens it is.

I'm going from the loawa 7.5 to the panasonic 7-14. The Laowa vignetting is really bad. the center can be 2 stops hotter than the corners. the 7-14 looks pretty even across the board.

The 7-14 is a great lens. it has a more distorted look on the wide end and is much slower which usually leads to nosier footage, but overall is very sharp.
