Patti was terrifying in this part. Her Everything’s Coming Up Roses is the most disturbing interpretation I’ve ever seen, and here in Rose’s Turn we truly see a psychotic breakdown before our eyes. She earned every best actress award that season on Broadway, each one so deserved.

@@ACinemafanatic Saw Patti live. Saw video of Angela. Respectfully disagree. Patti goes deeper emotionally and seems truly psychotic. A lacerating performance. And, in some ways, accurate. According to stories, Rose Hovick wasn't just a "stage mother", she was deeply disturbed and may have killed a woman. At any rate, I am sparing with standing ovations, but leapt to my feet for this performance. I don't know how actors throw themselves into roles like this night after night.

@@jlasf I see what you’re saying but Angela’s approach first did it where rose seems like she’s snapped for a bit with her bowing like there’s an audience cheering for her and she’s smiling almost psychotically and then Patti I think really went more deranged with it a bit darker as well with her portrayal

Patti still gives a fresh take on her roles, even after decades. Moreover, she's truly splendid for sparing the life of the bootlegger during the time of this filming. I only hope she was quick and merciful with their demise thereafter.

Yes, I think it really was. I saw Patti in this twice - a matinee and an evening performance on the same day (I know - mad!) and her evening performance of this was very different to the way she had performed it a few hours earlier. I thought it was quite strange at the time (and still do, I think). In London, I saw Imelda Staunton in the role three times and her performance seemed completely identical each time - exactly the same intonations, gestures etc… Staunton’s performance was my favourite, but it seemed identical each time. Patti’s performances were quite different on the day I saw them.

I saw the show and I got the feeling she was playing everything that came before at a level 7 intensity. We know she can blast it whenever she wants. So, I was a bit surprised so much seemed a bit muted. But then I realized she was saving it up for the end. She turned its up to 11, as they say in "Spinal Tap."

I understand this performance in ways that I cant explain. some of us go through hard times or traumatic events that we can't really come back from mentally. Or over time it's warped us. A lot of our lives now aren't pretty....Tbh I can't really function anymore. I can't work, because I have outbursts or I can't get along with anyone, I really do try so hard, but ppl don't like me after awhile if we get along at all. At this point I have franticly crazed periods of days where I can't sleep mostly 2-3 but sometimes up to 4 days, and I'm scary. And this happens at least 2 or mostly 4 times a month.... I get the feeling my boyfriend is honestly done with me after 6 years. He's said that he can't be with me unless I can get the proper help. I'm looking to go into inpatient treatment, I've literally tried everything i can think of. I'm not going to go into everything but...I was stabbed one night and punctured lung. A stalker who I didn't even know followed me home from a bar. It was 6 months of death threats and basically anxiety hell before he actually stabbed me. I was only 24 in 2014 and this guy was 48 and truly needed help. He's in prison now. That's all I will say. I feel like Patty's portrayal on stage of a scary frantic woman is a real thing...i know some people might think it's weird to post all this on here, but I don't post it anywhere or even talk about it to ppl. Theater can get you to emotionally connect with a song or even a character. Im embarrassed to say I cried for awhile after watching this. Because I know what this is like.

Every performer brings their own interpretation to the role of Madame Rose. Merman created it and it was a powerhouse performance. Lansbury gave a performance that was a masterclass in acting. Daly also acted the role brilliantly. LuPone brought forth the desperation and manic energy of the role. Staunton was another masterclass in acting. As for Peters, I will draw the curtain of charity over her performance. She just wasn't right for the role. I like her in almost everything else that she's done, but not in Gypsy. And not as Dolly. Just not right for her.

Does anyone else think Patti is not really playing Mama Rose by this point? It's more...DIVA LA LUPONE....WATCH ME!! It's overblown... exageratated. Okay, LA LUPONE IS LA LUPONE, but I'm not particularly impressed. Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, and even Bernadette Peters, had more subtlety and humanity in the role. Betty Buckley (Paper Mill Playhouse: 1998) was an exploding volcano. Okay, LA LUPONE-- it's YOUR turn-- but she just seems to be showing off and screaming here (just my opinion).
