8:00 Making sure that they watch you write out the instructions and voluntarily correct you was a really helpful tip, thank you. I have always had difficulty paying attention to auditory instruction (traditional lectures, podcasts, etc are utterly useless to me). No issue whatsoever with written instructions or videos with captions that I can read, or at bare minimum, a recording that I can replay as many times as I need. Getting a spoken coding prompt that I have to interpret, possibly over a phone, and possibly with a strong accent, is my worst nightmare interview scenario.

But then the interviewer asked me if I could do some optimization (not time and space complexity but reduce the lines of code) and I didn't come up with the answer he wanted at the end. I am still waiting for their decision and I feel like its also a 50-50 game for me. Hopefully I can get it. Job hunting is just so frustrating lol.

It would be helpful if you also talked about the negotiation round, as one question that comes up during the recruiter interview is "what is your expectation for your compensation? " It is a difficult question to answer since you can only reference your past employment history for an increment. How to estimate the value you as a software engineer would bring in 2022 to Google and thus negotiate your self-worth to them and get paid ???

The first time I cold applied online but then reached out to a few recruiters and one of them gave me an interview. The second time I was contacted on LinkedIn by a recruiter (probably contracted) and got the interview that way. I say definitely reach out (well!) and also don't ignore contracted recruiters as they probably have a lot less people reaching out to them. I believe they're contracted because they have companies like Randstad listed as their employer but have google recruiter/sourcer in their profile/headline. Definitely target them.

Hey there. Thanks for all your great videos. One big challenge that I have always struggled with these virtual interviews at least, is when you try to communicate/draw your thoughts for the first time when you see the problem online. So normally when you are to solve a problem you have to first do a few examples by hand and a pen (draw a decision tree for a DP problem or work with some pointers)and then only afterwards, you can collect your thoughts and code the solution up. So the question is how did you do that initial thinking process? particularly on the google doc, as it is not very user-friendly with drawing shapes/trees(lags in updating canvas), and plus it takes a good amount of time to sketch things. If you can share your experience in this regard also would be truly appreciated.

Went through the same process, technical sourcer reached out to me, arranged a technical interview, which was set, then out of the blue the technical interview team decided to call me a day early, I informed them that the interview was only the next day, I wasn't in front of my laptop at the time, they apologized and then said they'd re-schedule and noted they called a day early. Weeks went by no follow-up, I reached out to which I was told to provide dates I'd be available, I did, no one called, reached out again, and after two months of waiting for the re-scheduling of the interview nothing happened, there seems to be no urgency to get things done and to follow up with people in a timely manner, I really hope this was just a bad case with me and that others didn't have to go through the pain of waiting forever.

Great story! Maybe you could elaborate on your experience in Hiring committee and and team matching phase? I'm currently doing team matching right now after the onsite and your videos definitely helped a lot. Haven't done HC yet tho

Interesting. This isn't the first video where someone talks about applying online directly and I keep seeing these videos talk about the online assessment. That's news to me. I was contacted by a google recruiter on LinkedIn. She said she was impressed with my work history and I said I wanted to prep for a few months and she contacted me 2 months later instead of the 3 that I originally said I wanted to prep (a colleague of mine suggested 3 months). But actually it turned out that I only really needed maybe 1 or 2 weeks to prep. I setup the technical interview and later the virtual on site interview with ease. Maybe my experience was better because I had 10+ years of experience. It's rare for me to meet a recruiter that blows me off. Only happened recently, but so many others contact me that it doesn't matter. I can't imagine having zero experience now a days, it seems like it's more competitive when starting off.
