Jared, I have one comment, it’s constructive, but it’s not criticism! I think that you are genius without realising it! The fact that you blade didn’t touch the cutting board on many cuts actually eliminates dulling the edge on wood, making it a much more accurate test. If you’re interested in the opinion of a geezer that has been testing military equipment for a living for the past 12 years, yours is a better test.Well done!
@NeevesKnives8 ай бұрын
that is a great point thank you, i need to figure out how to doit without taking away the feet it can add up to, i know i can pick it up and just let the blade follow though with the card board off of the surface, the problem is that its difficult for me to get small straight cuts over and over i wind up using way more cardboard because i cant do as many cuts with one piece that way.
@CuttingBoardRx8 ай бұрын
@@NeevesKnives what if you placed a strip of foam exactly 1 inch wide, that would stop the blade before your knuckles hit the board? Just an idea this way for each cut you losing one inch which you can add up in the end and subtract the exact number of inches or feet.
@jamesreese71118 ай бұрын
@@NeevesKnivesYou could just use 13" cardboard and don't cut all the way through then clean up would also be easier as well.
@EDCandLace8 ай бұрын
With my cardboard cut tests, I cut the cardboard 15 inches, I make a 90 degree fold at 12 inches. I cut until the fold hits/stops the belly of the knife so the cuts stay together and I can count them along with the 1.5 inch cutting edge section that's being tested never touches anything except the cut. Works great, each cuts 1 foot so it's quick to count and the part of the cutting edge that's being tested never touches anything except the cut.
@NeevesKnives8 ай бұрын
@EDCandLace that's so funny you said that because I was thinking I could try and find something over 12 make a line then cut to line, however I would hate to mark 300 pieces

Best knife comparison I have ever seen! The thickness behind the edge data is overlooked a lot of times. 1 thing I think you didn't mention is that Civivi states an hrc of 57-59. I won't buy a knife in 20cv/m390. Dr Larrin Thomas states it is a poorly designed steel then explains why in a way that I understand. His body of work has taught me most of what I know about blade steels. And he designed magnacut. So if they want my premium(stainless)knife dollar the knife will be in magnacut not 20cv. The Civivi is on the menu though, me second favorite budget steel right behind aebl.

Love the showdown. One consideration for you: it would be interesting to see an edge comparison under the microscope at the same number of cuts before stropping (I.e. at 309 cuts for both) then at completion of 662 cuts on the we. Then we can see how the edge compares under similar use, and how they look when they need to be sharpened.

Nice comparison but calling the Civivi "budget" is somewhat of a misnomer. The Civivi is quite far from budget, at $78. This is no cheap knockoff as WE and Civivi are the same company, just made from less expensive materials but still top quality.... and given the Civivi is probably 3x less expensive than the WE knife, the results are fantastic for the Civivi.
@jamesreese71118 ай бұрын
Jared, well done brother! My take on your test results is that the Civivi at 1/3 the price delivered 1/2 the performance of the We. I love the Qubit but I'm not ready to pick up the We version at $200. The geometry, edge retention, price and strop response of the Civivi is truly impressive at $65. I'll wait for the We version to drop in price before I get one. Since the big Banter recently dropped to $150 I think the Qubit will eventually be available for $130 - $150. At this point in my collecting I'm more aware of the FOMO and how much you can save by waiting for Christmas sales and discontinued clearance sales. We've all paid full price, just to see it weeks or months later for half the price. Both are great but I'm sticking with my Civivi Qubit's for now.

The problem i have with this is detent comparison. I my experience 2 of the same knives ordered at the same time can have totally different detents. So when reviewers say its perfectly tuned, it applies to what is in their hand. Natural variability means it's a bit of a lottery what you get. These are mass manufacturered knives. I have three qsp penguins, all three had issues
@kwongyeang8 ай бұрын
Your point is true for most knife companies. However, I think WE/Civivi/Sencut might be the exception. I like their knives and have multiple copies of the same model. I find their detents to be almost identical within the same model. Having said that, when there is a WE premium model of the Civivi knife (thinking Elementum Buttonlock), Yes, the detent appear to be tuned differently to the Civivi version. Just my experience so far.

that is very true, i usually try to say whether its strong light or right in the middle which would be perfect imo, but i will try to do a better job explaining, but yeah they can fluctuate between models

For sliding across the ground, What if you introduce something mechanical that made it easier to reproduce? Either a slingshot, or a golf club wrapped in foam and like a piece of wood to stop it from following through. I'm sure you could think of something better, but it would help you to get the angle and force consistent. Probably the least important thing that you're testing, but it came to mind right away.

You are right, but doing it well, it is better than cutting a piece of paper test. I use the test everytime that I sharpen a knife. I loved this head to head comparison with the abuse and cut tests! The ONLY critique I have is for post production. If possible, lower the volume of the cutting while you’re explaining the results.
