What is negative rake, and why are carbide cutters ideal for the task? Tracey Malady takes us through the basics and shows us how the Easy Wood Carbide Cutters work to make the task easier and more manageable....
Easy Wood Carbide Woodturning Tools:
www.timbecon.com.au/brands/ea...
Easy Wood Tools offers a series of replaceable carbide cutter woodturning tools that address fatigue, safety and efficiency like no other tools. They are designed to effortlessly remove massive amounts of material on any woodturning project without the need for sharpening. Rotate the cutter when one side gets dull and when you've used all the sides, just replace with a new cutter.
The tools are designed with support directly beneath the cutting edge transferring the cutting pressure downward allowing the lathe to take the pressure that normally would go to your hands and body when roughing. Because the pressure goes into the tool rest, your body doesn't get tired as quickly which equals more turning time.
Other benefits include -
The reduced likelihood of kick-back and catches - due to the neutral cutting angles, the tool is easy to use.
There are no bevels to learn - Easy Wood Tools are held flat on the tool rest and parallel to the floor. Cut left, right or straight in within minutes of picking it up.
So why pick Easy Wood Tools over the other carbide cutter turning tools found on the market? They only specialize in carbide turning tools and have put a huge investment into making them the best. While other companies are trying to imitate, Easy Wood continue to innovate and are at the forefront of this new evolution in turning tools.
Grade, Grind and Geometry
These are the 3G's of the perfect carbide cutter. Easy Wood have invested thousands of man hours finding the perfect combination of these variables and it shows in the quality of the cutters, the sharpness of the edge and the life you get from each one. Made solely by Easy Wood in Kentucky, the secret formulation of these attributes means you will never find a better performing carbide edge than genuine EWT Carbide.
Combined with the best quality materials to complete the manufacturing process of producing these tools - you can be sure to buy an Easy Wood Tool and for it to last a lifetime, with just the cutters needing replacement.

Easy Wood Tools were the first to start the carbide craze and when all the impostors are long gone, they'll be the last. They're the original innovators because they only produce these kinds of tools. Nothing else. This means they bore more wood for their size, their attention to detail is infallible, their reliability is industry-leading and their quality is always assured.
Unlike some of their competitors, they also won't sting you on replacement tips. All these reasons and more are why Timbecon stock Easy Wood.

Great video. I wanted to say, while you said they were meant for finishing, I use mine from start to finish when I'm turning pens. Obviously there's a difference between them and bowls, but they work wonders knocking off the corners of the blanks. No catching, just a smooth cut from start to finish.

Thanks for your kind comment! We will certainly pass that on to Tracey - that is if she hasn't seen it herself yet. If you are a beginner at woodturning, you could also check out our Woodturning playlist on this channel. We are sure you will find much more there to assist you - some from Tracey, and some from another one of Australia's premiere woodturners, Andrew Potocnik.

Hi 👋 I do love ❤️ watching your tips and ideas on using tools , l have just brought one ☝️ of these tools finisher + Ci0-NR & Ci1-R2-NR , I am going to make a steel shaft for the Ci1-R2-NR to fit on , as I am retired I don't have a lot money to spend, I use my easy wood tools last weekend for the first time and it gives an excellent finish very easy to use as you describe. I hope you don't mind me saying but I think you should be wearing a dust mask and face protection. I've watched your KZbin before it's always very interesting and very helpful. Keep safe, Phil from the Moulin in France.

I got into pen turning about a year ago and after countless pens turned on various woods I decided to try my hand at acrylic blanks. The results were less than spectacular. I would try various speeds, angles, tools...nothing seemed to stop the catches. I was so frustrated I almost threw my blanks in the trash. Then I saw an ad for Easy Wood Tools Negative Rake cutters. Could this be the the answer to my prayers?! My unheated shop is just to cold to work in currently but as soon as the temps warm up enough I will be putting the Negative Rake cutters to work. I am hoping by the time I get to use them someone will come up with an easy way to sharpen them like the standard carbide cutters. If no one does but the cutters work out I will still consider it a fair trade off even if I have to buy new cutters every time I wear one out. Although you was turning wood not acrylic the results I saw in your video working on that gorgeous bowl make the Cutter's look very promising when I graduate on to other projects. Many Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge and expertise!

Long story short I couldn't wait for warmer weather to test out my new Negative Rake cutter. I froze my buns off but it was totally worth it. The new negative cutter worked like gang busters! No snags, catches, OR chipping!! On top of that the blank was so smooth it took very little sanding before sealing it up. Can't wait till I can spend more time with my new cutter. In fact I hope to have several spares by the time the weather allows me back in my shop. THANK YOU so much for showing me this new cutter. Now I look forward to building more pens with acrylic blanks! Respectfully, John Archer

The Easy Wood tools are not cheap. That's true. We have noticed a marked difference, however, between them and the knock off 'equivalents' in terms of build and quality. They are a quality product, designed and made entirely in the U.S, so there is that to be considered in the price. You are wise in choosing the Easy Wood cutters. That's the pointy end of the stick where it really matters! Thanks for watching, and for your comment. There are plenty of woodworking videos on our channel and more to come, so please subscribe if you haven't already.

Technically, you can. there's a video on how to do it. But like it was said previously, theyll last quite a bit and they aren't that expensive to replace.
