Negative rake scrapers are very easy to sharpen. In this video, I will explain how I set up the grinder platform and sharpen the negative rake scrapers that I use in my woodturning. If you have some of my negative rake scrapers and aren't sure how to sharpen them, this is what you need!
Thank you to Stuart Batty and Bonnie Klein for showing me the Negative Rake Scraper concept.
Please visit my website to see more woodturning tools. www.cindydrozda.com/
If you are wondering where to get that grinder support platform, it is made by Stuart Batty Tools and sold by Woodworkers Emporium in Las Vegas USA. The platforms are not listed on the website, give them a call to ask about them.

I haveaneighbor who is a machinist and I had him add 2 - 1 inch tabs on the top of my Wolverine tool rest. Now it passes a full inch on either side of the wheel. It's all flush and smooth. If you have a machine shop handy or know a friend. It cost me 10 bucks...neighborhood rates.

@@DaveBellStickermetimbers Well, that's disappointing. I hope they're planning to get more. It's the best grinder rest out there. You can do fairly well with the Wolverine platform by cutting out the notch around the wheel, or putting an overlay on top of it like I show in one of the videos. Robo Hippy also makes an adjustable rest that's good.

I noted your angles or included angles seems to be mostly symmetrical, is that by preference or simply because it is easier because the platform angle is already set. Ie 25 degrees and 25 degrees.
@cindydrozda
@cindydrozda 2 жыл бұрын
Edward, It doesn't seem to matter if the angles are symmetrical or not. Setting one platform angle and sharpening either side is good on tools that I might use either way up. I do some with a different angle top and bottom.

Thanks for the video. One question though, to raise the bur is the wheel turning toward you or away from you? If turning towards you, wouldn’t that raise the but on the bottom of the tool vs the top?

Hello Cindy thank you for your videos but most of all the clarification on the subject matter. I watch several other channels and where I have a question, viewing your channel you have answered many questions. My question is are these various tools in this video purchased and you keep them sharp or did you make them from raw steel. If you have made them Could you please advise the best steel material “ the metal type” or number” to make a tool with and your best method of heat treating them. Thank You very much David Ray
@cindydrozda
@cindydrozda 4 жыл бұрын
Hi David, You can either make Negative Rake Scrapers or you can buy them. The ones I use are available on my website www.cindydrozda.com/. If you make your own, use the best steel you can find and it will hold an edge longer. Better to buy the steel already heat treated. Heat treating HSS is quite a process.

these tools are shaped skew chisels used as scrapers; if your gouges are sharp and you know how to use them how much scraping do you really need???? sometimes "advancement" in technique is confused with marketing.
