Check us out at the NEW Lawntrepreneur.com!
Today we're going to be mowing tall grass and cleaning up a new property that we just picked up this week! To say that they had an overgrown lawn is an understatement! The front boulevard was almost 2 feet tall, and the back was no different!
Thankfully it was pretty dry (and hot!) out and the grass was able to be mowed back into shape with not too much trouble. It's not every day that we see properties like this in the nicer subdivisions that we mow in, but sometimes we find a neglected property and we have to get it back in shape!
I'm not sure about you guys but I love watching clips and videos like these. Somehow they're just oddly satisfying and it's always fun to see some of these commercial lawn mowers in action shredding through thick tall grass lol. Thanks for watching!

I got called into do a clean up of a house that the guy had been out of state working for 6 months and was coming home for the labor day weekend by his friend who was supposed to be taking care of the property. The grass was chest high in some areas. It was a good week but I hadn't been in that area of the county since Monday. I told him what my emergency fee was plus fee for double or triple cut charge. I got there at 7am and called the guy took pictures of the grass. I had never in my life been so glad to have a tractor and bush hog. This was a 3 acre of mowing property. I had it nocked down by 10 am just after the home owner pulled up. He told me to keep going, and signed up for service. The guy who was getting paid to make sure it was done paid my normal emergency fee plus double the triple cut fee. The owner was so happy to have his nightmare done with and he didn't have to do it, that he tipped me 100 dollars. I hauled off the clippings in a 20ft dump trailer 6 loads to a local farmers who gave me $20 a load for silage grass. This kept me from making a 20 mile one way haul to a composting location owned by a local city. So for the day I ended up $600.00 in the black after overhead. I smiled all the way to the fallowing Tuesday when I deposited the money into the bank. That was in 1993 or 1994.

The tallest property that I ever mowed, had about 3-4 feet of growth. It took an entire day to cut, and we usually had huge establishments such as Hotels, and Apartment Complexes to do. It took us all day, and we had to come back the next day in order to go over it one more time as well as do some cleanup on whatever was left. We also had to trim out around the side of the yard, a lower hill, and blow everything that wasn't picked up by the Walk Behinds into the yard so that It could be used as fertilizer or whatnot. It was annoying. And it was also around 80-90 degrees outside. So it was horrifying.

I find it satisfying turning overgrown neglected properties into something nice. Ill bring loppers, recip saw with pruner blades, and the usual law equipment. Only downside is people tend not want to pay much for the time and abuse the equipment takes. Plus the hidden gems in the overgrowth, like hoses, kids toys and random bricks/rocks (that happen to be way out from any buildings under 3 ft of growth, when hit)

Hey I had one like this just yesterday. I rough cut it at 4 1/4, then bagged it up at 3 3/4. I must have emptied like a dozen times! I have three toro 6000 series pro cuts. I only used one since the other two were on other jobs. I did it in like 45 minutes. I also changed my mow pattern to ensure the yard was cut in two mowings, no tall grass when I was done!

Just a pointer when I mow over grown grass I’ll mow what height I’m mowing the yard one time all the way through then go two or so inches higher the second cut and the third I’ll run what height I’m mowing really helps mulch up the clippings and spreads them out well I’ve been doing lawn care for 15 years I’ve mowed 1000000 dollars homes to trailers they all get the same treatment

When cutting long grass it helps to raise the deck all the way up first. Make lines in one direction, lower the deck 1 inch. Then cut at a different angle. 3rd cut lower .5 inches and cut at another opposite angle to disperse the clippings. This is a lot harder in tight spaces but this shouldn't have been a problem in the front of the house.

Although it is costly, I believe the FW15 would be great to purchase first for hills and small backyards. Once things get rolling, I will upgrade the lawn tractor. What is the biggest yard you have cut (square footage or acreage) with the FW15 and how long did it take you?

Last week I mowed 3 properties that were 12+ inches. I have a 36" Scag walk behind. After the first yard I had to replace all of my belts and change my oil. I ended up mowing the property 5+ times. It took me 5 1/2 hours but I got it knocked down. The owner is going to develop on the property so they don't care about weekly mowing. They didn't like my price but I explained I had to replace my belts and the time and the height I do not want to do that tall of grass again. It is to hard on my machine..

After about 2 months they finally asked if I could just do it for them while they were gone. The grass was up to my hip and I was a bit over 5 ft tall at the time. I basically mowed the acre lot 4 times in the span of about 3 days. Trimmed everything I couldn't' get with the mower. Walked away with $500 in my pocket. He got the mower fixed about 2 weeks later.

My longest lawn I mowed was around 3-5 feet. 5 feet at the highest. With a push mower and a weedeater that wouldn’t start up halfway through

Nice work man, we go through stuff like that on a weekly basis lol. Block slashing and overgrown rental property cleanups are basically becoming one of the mainstays of my business. I throw my rear discharge JD front mount in and it doesn't stop for anything ;D I think my record is probably around 5ft because that's a bit lower than most fences here and I've had a few that were almost up to the top of it!

The tallest grass I cut was my yard the first cut after buying the place I have about 7 acres of grass on a pretty steep hill. My neighbor said the grass hadn't been mowed for about 4 years. It was 7ft in places. I did about half with my lazer z then the neighbor brought his tractor with brushog to finish after I blew a belt. I'm pretty sure I doubled the property value by mowing the grass ha.

Listen we all know NOTHING stripes better than an Exmark but, this video is proof that they can also lay da smackdown on an overgrown property too. The Z was chuckin grass way far out da chute!! And yes... these videos are so oddly satisfying!! Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!

I’ve been double cutting most lawns this week! It’s insane. I’m in north jersey and all the lawns seem to be on steroids. Even the unferted lawns

I had to do a commercial site that was about 4ft tall mostly thick weeds. At the time we had a Exmark 48 and 52 inch turf tracer walk behind and the blew through it with only 3 passes. On the 3rd pass the clippings were more like a paste.

What do you do when you come across a very wet and soft yard? I’m having issues with getting stuck or spinning tires because the ground just gets so soft on jobs and wet too but they really want the grass mowed!

You just have to be patient and give the property an extra few days to dry out, or just trim that section if possible.

When I lived at my dads back in 2008 his neighbors grass was as tall as their chain link fence. About 4 feet or so. I cut it with a push mower. It wasn't a big yard at all. But it took a few hours to cut it because I had to go over it 4 times. It got me paid and another job to clean the gutters out that were also long overdue. Made a few hundred. At 16 that might as well have been a million dollars LOL

Johnson Grass about 10/ft. Used a brush hog to knock it down, then mowed it with my oldest push mower bc I didn't want to ruin my good Deere!

Thanks for all you do for others. To give of your time and more. Bless you 🙏. I don't mow any longer on my property. My husband does what he can do. I know you should cut it at different levels, starting high and go lower. I wanted to say, I have seen grass about 4 ft or more. It doesn't seem that grass there is as tall as you stated. Only my opinion. Wish you had measured it. I have learned not to cut grass too low, so the sun doesn't burn it or dry it out. I might be wrong, just what I have been told. I had lawn service and each time they would leave information on anything we needed to do to make it, or keep it green. Thanks for all you do for others. 🙏👍🙂 P. S. It looks in better shape than others I have seen. Greener and level, etc.
