Saul/Jimmy having the ability to negotiate with Tuco, is the reason why later on in the show, when Tuco's cousin Lalo, who is more calm, and laid back, but still a psychopath, comes into town, wants Saul/Jimmy to help out the cartel, and represent one of their guys, Krazy 8, who is locked up in jail. So Saul/Jimmy was able to talk Tuco down from killing the two skater guys, but ultimately it screwed him later on. One of my all time favorite shows, right alongside Breaking Bad, and The Sopranos.

I think another thing to look at is the way saul is standing, he isnt standing up straight and his head is tilted at an angle that makes it seem like he's looking up at tuco (dude with the knife). saul looks pretty tall and if he stood at attention, he is most likely taller than tuco but the way he's speaking to him and the way he is making himself seem small every time tuco gets mad helps show tuco that yes saul is talking and negotiating but at the end of the day tuco is the big man and the one in charge. it kinda goes back with matching the clothing, didn't take off the coat to bring himself down to their level style wise but he lowered himself physically to show he's nothing to them so not worth hurting. but then again it could be because he's afraid, but body language is also a great negotiating tool I think

Regarding his appeal to emotion -- yes, it didn’t sell, but it did get his foot in the door to start the negotiation. Saul noticed how much this principled psychopath cared about his abuelita (grandma) when they were at Tuco’s house before taken to the desert, so he used that observation to first distract Tuco from the target of his rage: the twins. “Think about their mother” shifted his attention and anger. The mere fact that Tuco listened to Saul paint that detailed picture of mom means he was engaging, despite having to change tactics again.

You caught this, but I think it should be noted how Saul was smart to open possible punishments with the laughably minimal "black eye." It is literally a "low ball" offer and makes Tuco laugh, but after that, Saul can keep bargaining the punishment's severity lower because he opened with something so minimal (that could be dismissed without thought), that everything to come after would seem better than "just a black eye" to Tuco. What they settle on is still much worse than a black eye, but much lighter than a death sentence.

It is actually called anchoring bias and is specifically used in negotiations. The first offer you make in a negotiation sets the tone for everything that follows, during an experiment people were asked to multiply 1*2*3*4*5*6*8 in less than 10 seconds, the first group was given a paper with the digits written from Lower to higher and the second had an inverted one, obviously no one got close to the real answer being more than 40k but the answers of the two groups on average diverted of more than 3k from each other because the first group started multiplying by 2 while the second had 8.

I'd argue that Saul's garb is actually what Tuco actively relates to; because Jimmy _isn't_ dressed casually but professionally, Tuco sub- or even semi-consciously picks up on the idea that this 'lawyer' is legit, because he's 'othered' by the suit. The suit also looks ridiculous in the desert; Jimmy looks incongruous, ergo he's is paradoxically afforded that extra aspect of lowered humility alongside that potentially 'unbiased outsider' look.

Tuco Salamanca is the kind of guy who has done much worse for much less, so Jimmy is one hell of a negotiator to talk Tuco down from a Columbia necktie each, to having their eyes gouged out, down to one broken leg each. They slandered the Salamanca name by calling his grandmother a derogatory name, which is a death penalty to a Salamanca, especially Tuco. So, Jimmy pulled off a miracle by letting them leave that desert with their lives. The one henchman that Tuco gets in his face for speaking for him, doesn’t learn his lesson here and pays a far greater price than these two skateboarders did in Breaking Bad. He needed Jimmy to be there to negotiate for him and maybe he’d still be around?

I think the context is everything on this scene. The whole execution started because of the two harassing an old lady that just happens to be his grandma. When he described their mother, he was actually describing this old lady. I think Saul is waaaaay underestimated on this scene as he could provoke on Tuco the self identification effect, which bound him to the boys destiny. Before that, whether their gonna live or die was meaningless, Tuco was basically venting out his rage for his grandma distress. But right after that description (and most important, Tuco's acceptance of that description as truth), he couldn't hurt them without provoking distress to another very similar old lady. In other words, unconsciously, he got concerned he would be responsible for yet another distress to his grandma (anothe one's mother, but our brain sometimes can't tell the difference). So, he turned to Saul in order to find a way to not distress their mother, but still venting out his rage properly. Tuco as a character doesn't care about people from outside his family. So the only way to avoid his rage is to make him identify you as a family member (or a family friend). Walt managed to do that, but that backfired once he became paranoid
@greybeardmc
@greybeardmc 2 жыл бұрын
It wasn't just harassing, they were trying to con her. One would skateboard in front of the victim's car and get hit then they would try to extort money from the victim for the accident. The original plan (and Jimmy was in on it) was to con someone else in a similar vehicle, but they got the wrong vehicle.

I have to say I strongly disagree on your first point about Saul’s clothes making him lose in credibility. In fact, I think it does rather make him a favor and stands as an advantage in his negotiation. Remember, Tuco is literally a capricious kid - well, at least he kinda acts like it - and the fact that Saul wears a suit psychologically puts him in the posture of the parent and makes Tuco basically the toddler, hence his enhanced ability to listen to him while Saul steps further into the negotiation. Also, watch carefully Tuco’s reaction as the negotiation is growing. Besides, we could also analyze Saul’s look as a vital reminder of his social status. He still is, nonetheless, a lawyer after all. And that is a genuine strong reminder that must cool down Tuco fierce anger and keeps him cold-blooded.
@mardicai
@mardicai 2 жыл бұрын
I'd disagree. Your explanation would have made sense if Tuco had a normal childhood, but he had always been in the game. The cartel absolutely hate the government. They *would rather die* than to help them in any way. "Stroke or no stroke, gangbang Mexicans don't help feds" - Steve Gomez. Saul obviously isn't involved with the DEA, but I'd say him wearing a suit subconsciously aligns him closer to the feds than it does to the cartel. *Especially* since Saul had previously lied about being an undercover FBI agent, in which Tuco initially believed. There was also the first time they met at his home, when Saul claimed he was an officer of the court. "Open up in the name of the law." That's twice he gave Tuco the impression that he was involved with the feds. The only reason Tuco gave Saul the benefit of a doubt, that he was actually just some *nobody lawyer,* is because Nacho reminded him that he had been respectful throughout all their interactions.

The initial appeal to emotion was definitely critical to Saul's success here. He had NO leg to stand on, no backup on the way, his own safety was only recently assured and still very easily revoked. And he somehow ended it with Tuco giving him a completely invented authority to 'agree' to the situation, borderline asking Saul for permission. Even if having a doting self-sacrificing mother didn’t endear the twins to Tuco, Saul agreeing with Tuco that the twins were idiots who didn't deserve her worked to put him and Tuco on equal footing. The professional attire is also key imo. Tuco is a rabid idiot but he was very firmly taught to respect authority. Saul looking like an authority figure off the bat gave him better chances, and made it easier for Tuco to buy into Saul somehow being in charge of the situation.

You sound like you didn't even watch the entire episode, or you would have understood why Jimmy uses the mother angle. Also, Jimmy couldn't change his clothes since he was practically taken at gun point and brought to the desert. So, you are judging things that have been taken out of context. Next time watch the entire episode first

You're right. I know most people won't watch (or remember) the whole episode. So this is a teaching tool that takes that snippet out of context to make learning points. It's doomed for imperfect for that point. I wish I could give the full context for the show but there wouldn't be enough time to do it justice. Great observation and an important comment!

Okay, so I watched this video on a lark expecting it to be like an old Charisma on Command video where I just kind of zone out and consume the visual equivalent of junk food - mildly entertaining, nothing real gained - while i think about something else and mayyyyyyyyyyyyybe it sparks a little train of thought that i can go somewhere. but within the first 5 minutes, you've actually made me appreciate the writing of the show even more - which i wasn't sure was possible - by showing off some of the moves of the characterization Gonna have to watch that The Office one in the sidebar

I feel as if Saul could have spoke more about their importance to him and his business. Reasoning, I need them in my day to day activities. You have me as a trustworthy servant in law from this point forward. If you are in a legal bind I got you Tuco...they have been beaten, and if they step out of line again, I will not hesitate to call u. Let them go with me so I can continue your business or whatever favor you may need. Hell, it could be a carwash, your laundry, more importantly, surveillance for you or errands I need them to run on your behalf. They work for you now, gringos and now you have a foot in their world.

Jimmy’s energy and affect stayed the same throughout, almost like an emotional anchor. Tuco responded in how his how own energy adjusted to match, mirroring Jimmy almost like synchronicity. It is a beautiful demonstration of how effective it is to manage someone else’s behavior by modeling what you want to see. (Bit of a risky move when you’re in a desert with an unstable personality though lol)

I love how Tuco is a psycho but isn’t quite as psychotic yet. As he probably hasn’t gotten hooked on meth or drugs yet. But he has his usual psycho flareups and explosive temper but isn’t offf the wall psycho yet.

4:30 as someone who works in political marketing, I couldn't agree more. Biggest mistake I see over and over again is clients who think the best message is the message they (or their already loyal base) want to hear, but that's rarely the message most voters want.

This is all good stuff but the gangster dude is just toying with the lawyer. He wants to see the lawyer agree to something really bad and so the negotiator here is actually the gangster. He wants to see how much damage the squeamish lawyer will agree to for funsies. So, I would go back and analyze this scene in that context.
