Nathan as a storyteller is amazing. This scene was hypnotic in his ability to captivate an audience.

anyone else notice the smile on Becketts face? like she knew Castle had them wrapped around his finger

Because he did. You can see it from the moment he asks about the guy in 8B. What really makes the scene though, isn't just Fillion's delivery, though it does help. There's a nearly subsonic bass during the entire monolouge that ratchets up the tension while he tells the story in a soft voice. He's not in front of them, but behind them. Narrating. While on screen, the victim's last moments play out. Like watching a movie in surround sound. Because what really has them hooked is that Castle doesn't embelish, justify, or excuse 8B. There's no drama, just facts. A case file. The kind of thing they've read about. Had to write about. It's REAL. And then he asks if they want coffee, breaking the spell. And that's why Beckett smiles . . . and where she starts to fall in love.

*Castle:* Why only run the worker's names? Why not run all the neighbor's names? *Beckett:* What are you basing that on? *Castle:* I'm...basing that on...the neighbor would make a better story. *Det. Ryan:* __ *Castle:* No, come on! What do any of us know about our neighbors in this city? You think the guy living next door to the Son of Sam knew he was living next door to the Son of Sam? *Capt. Montgomery:* He's right! Neighbors in Berkowitz's building had no idea he was the Son of Sam killer. *Castle:* Thank you. What about the guy in 8B? *Beckett:* Who? *Castle:* 8. B. Quiet guy. You see him every day, only...you never notice him. Well, he noticed Sara. She's young, beautiful. The kind of girl a guy like him would _never_ have a chance with. We all know girls like _that,_ don't we? Well, at first it's just a game. Figure out her schedule. When does she do her laundry? When is she...alone? Until it becomes something more, something that he can't _control._ Well, he uses the stairs, obviously, to avoid the elevator's cameras. And then he just waits, concealed in the shadows. When she comes into that laundry room, he pounces. __ When he looked into her vacant, lifeless eyes, he wanted to tell her...he never meant to kill her. All he ever wanted...was to be noticed. That's when he felt the heat of that dryer on his skin. So...he picks up her limp body in his arms, gently places it inside. He almost...smiled at his good fortune when he found the quarter in his pocket, slipping it into the slot. Buying him the time to do what he does best...disappear... __ Just sayin'. Better story. Coffee? __ *Capt. Montgomery:* Let's see what we can find out about those neighbors. And _someone_ better tell me who the hell lives in 8B!
