Pete, I played the traditional board game for the first time this week with some coworkers. My supervisor kept grabbing Australia, and my more aggressive buddies went for all the other territories. OF COURSE, there was plenty of laughter when I was standing on only 2 territories in Asia in the middle of the game. But sure enough, after the guy holding North America attacked aggressively and spread himself thin only for the laughter to stop. My supervisor was the only one who caught onto how I positioned myself to invade Canada with a whopping 42 troops. It was the biggest stack in the game despite not holding any territories. I just minded my business. Thanks for all the lessons Pete.

When I was a kid, I loved watching sitcoms and such on TV. I then had the same moment with my grandmother as you did with your dad. She said she didn't like most new shows because they're just a rehash of I Love Lucy and the Honeymooners. I watched a few and that's when I realized that most production companies find a formula that works and then drown you with it. You made a good point about the graphics and special effects things, too. I remember going to a movie as a kid and seeing the TriStar logo at the beginning for the first time. Seeing that white horse morph into a Pegasus was the coolest and one of the most beautiful things I'd seen in my life at that point when it came to TV and movies. I see it now... God, it's terrible. Most of the problem we have with entertainment these days isn't that the quality has gone down, it's just that the QUANTITY has gone so far up that we are inundated with the same stories that once held our fascination. I think that's why ultra violent and taboo shows like Game of Thrones got so popular a few years back. It was something new. Now, everyone's trying to outdo them.
@charliescream134 ай бұрын
George RR Martin made a great effort to subvert many of the common fantasy tropes that were present in myths and religions and then embedded into the fantasy genre by Tolkien and Robert Jordan. For example, the pretty, fair skinned family of Lannisters are the most diabolical faction. And the ragtag group of criminals dressed in all black are actually the loyal, thankless defenders of the northern border. Or the fact that Martin thought stories of sons avenging their dead fathers was unrealistic and cliche, so he set up the Red Wedding to subvert that trope. And he played the orphaned hero with secret royal lineage trope straight with Jon Snow, but he made enormous effort to disguise it and convince the audience that Jon was a true Stark. So much of the boredom from media is exactly as Pete answered. It's because as we get older, we see the same tropes used over and over until we can guess the plots and direction of a show or movie. Or we roll our eyes at a scene where the male lead of an action movie is bandaged by the female lead before going back into battle. The masses are going to consume MCU and laugh track sitcoms for the foreseeable future. But the groundbreaking work of television is going to be done by creators similar to George RR Martin and Dan Harmon, who created Community and Rick and Morty. Where tropes themselves are explored, deconstructed, subverted, and parodied so that the audience who has seen it all can still be surprised again.

Re the Q&A, Sturgeon's law: Ninety percent of everything is crap. If a hundred short stories are published a month 10 won't be crap but you can read all 100 and find the good ones. Now a million are published a month and you can't read them all so may never find the good ones and everything looks like crap. There are other factors; a particular philosophy has captured the MSM and as it has not captured the minds of the majority, the products really are less interesting, for example. They are essentially making content for an audience that doesn't exist. To turn the question back on the questioner was unfair, imho.

What a game! If I was black, I DEFINITELY would have rolled your cap the first turn he had his bonus though... With you having that position behind him and his only option being to go north east, there was no way he could have avoided fighting you eventually and at that time white was playing VERY friendly with border and didn't know your cap was there. Missed opportunity for black, but they played well. I can't believe you won this game! What fortunate cap rolls haha

43:15 ish. I disagree with you and I think you unintentionally agreed with me in your answer. You took it took literally (IMO) - the early Zelda games, the early Mario games, Half Life, Half Life 2, Diablo, Diablo 2-- a lot of the older video games have stood their times and the artists you mention albeit way earlier in our timeline, pretty much line up with the "video game" time line. All the games got prettier and have better graphics but they don't necessarily compete with the original classics. In almost any way.

I still think you’re missing the point of how heavily nostalgia biased you toward criticism to new artworks, or games in this case. Think of Bauldor’s Gate 3 for example. Games are sort of a nuanced argument because you sound like you value RPG where others may not.

I've now replied 4 times and all of them had errors. You are the one who doesn't understand here. He is comparing cave drawings to new age stuff. It does not have an axis of being considered fine art. Rembrandt and others are genre defying people in the art work. Mario, Zelda, half Life are all genre defying games. And the all happened hundreds of years apart. It does not make them less valuable. They defined gaming for 40 years.@@commandercrypto

@@commandercrypto baldurs gate 3 is adapted to new gen lgbt. It has nothing to do with nostalgia, it's just completely lame direction devs took forgetting quality gameplay and aiming for mass popularity. It's a so braindead game that 90% of it is looking at stupid cutscenes or watching AI slowly make their turns while you make yours in under a few seconds because there is nothing to strategise or plan.. I do see an issue with the advancement of technology in the art of games and other mediums in that at one time because of the limitations of the computer much of the focus was in creating a strategic challenge where now the main focus is in duplicating realism and being stylistic. So where we once filled in what was missing with our imaginations, the graphic design team has taken away the need to imagine or even the real ability to suspend our entire disbelief. And instead of creating more challenging game, the focus on the outward look of the game means they are simply ripping off the old and repackaging it. So it isn't all the viewer getting bored, it's actually the content getting monotonous and boring. I would find a very intense high end graphic on your risk game here as distracting and annoying if it was modernized with a 'fresher' look.

I have never understood Pollack or any of the abstracts... I guess I am just too logic based, Autistic, or a sociopath, LOL. So I guess a causational reaction is I actually dont really have emotional reactions to any paintings, sculpture or art. I basically loath modern art or statement art. I do however admire the skill patienc and vision of the artist. (except political or statement art) A small for instance, watching Bob Ross was always fascinating for me because I could never see where he was going until he was done. But I did appreciate his vision and effort.... Having said all that, In my opinion similar to Petes I guess is that everything is cyclical. All Epic or good stories get told again, why?because they are good stories. Why do most tragic love stories involve the Shakespeare model of story telling. Lastly until there are very tough times, near apocalypse type scenarios we will be rehashing the same stories and story lines for quite some time... That is why you think things have gotten worse. Necessity and Invention are not in sync.
