A teacher gave us a test and told us we could use whatever means we wanted to find the answers. "i said, Isn't that cheating?" He replied with "Knowing an answer is never as important as knowing how to find an answer, because it is impossible to know everything". Changed my life in one sentence.

Ok now whoever wants to comment something they consider controversial put it through here first so we can check if it's stupid or not.

No, knowledge is more valuable than intelligence. The second person showcased MORE knowledge than the first because they showed they KNOW HOW to solve the problem rather than just knowing the answer, which shows they know more steps and information. So it actually showed how knowledge IS valuable, at least more so than less knowledge, not that "intelligence is more valuable than education"

Intelligence comes into play when you run out of knowledge of a subject. Take the example of a vehicle, if your knowledge consists of put the key in the ignition and start the car. What happens if the car doesn’t start and you have no knowledge about how cars operate? Using only knowledge, you have reached an impasse. But using intelligence, you can use deductive reasoning to look for obvious problems such as loose battery cables or such.

But of the first person already knew the answer why should they be punished? This guy is such a phoney intellectual. The fact people think he’s deep is terrifying

No one is getting punished nor is it meant to be deep. Neil is educating people on how to become educated opposed to using intelligence in a way that satisfies a person and not the task assigned to them. Also who are you to say what is intellectual and what isn’t? Your resistance to respect his point of view and trying to understand him reminds me that we as humans face imperfection and that not everyone is willing to learn. Don’t respond if you don’t have something constructive to say.

@@ryanhilts3454 I don’t respect intellectual gatekeepers. He’s given a spotlight to push approved scientific narratives. Just like your attempt to tell me if I can respond or not. Are you my intellectual gatekeeper? Now I understand the appeal to his scientism approach to his work. The man is nothing more than a black Bill Nye who constructs a dialogue that sounds intellectual but he rarely gives anything of substance. This video is him telling college students anyone with a rational mind would understand. Problem solving skills and critical thought win out over people who memorize information. Not rocket science here. For the people who memorize information that advice won’t register either way if they don’t have the ability to map out an issue and call an audible if hardship comes into play. This is basic information here.

@@iconsumedmt1350 I find him to be just to be a mouthpiece for mainstream science/scientism. His job is to go on shows and perform. What gave it away to me was his Rogan appearance years ago and the conversation about gravity. I’m paraphrasing here but Rogan was questioning how it’s tested and NDT basically said who cares. From his perspective the interview was a performance. When Rogan began questioning him he got clearly pissed off. It’s early here so that’s the first thing I remember noticing this. I would hope it’s well understood memorizing information and regurgitating it is very limited. If there’s no understanding of the information it’s pointless. Basically I find most academics and the modern scientific community frauds. Debate isn’t allowed if it’s against consensus. Consensus isn’t scientific it’s politics. This is how we get a society of people who memorize and don’t understand

@@kaytrout3836 firstly, he is not just an actor doing the bidding of mainstream science. He has had research positions and a degree in physics from Harvard. Secondly, it was joe Rogan being a idiot when talking to ndt about gravity. Gravity is the result of curved spacetime, and I’m sure joe knows this. So what is he doing by asking “why gravity?” He was looking for deeper philosophical answer. Ndt’s point was that endless philosophizing (questioning the existence of chairs, etc.) is not productive. Please just admit that you’re looking for any reason to call ndt untrustworthy because of his stance of climate change. He’s very much willing to debate about this, on Ben Shapiro’s show for example. I don’t see how this makes him a fraud.

So what's his proposal to stimulate creative thinking? Judging spelling mistakes on a sliding scale. Normally grading spelling tests would be an hour long chore but Neil wants to make it a week long ordeal. This guy with his ivory tower platitudes has never fought in the trenches.

Efficiency isn’t always the best because it makes doing one thing or a process of things very easy and correctly. Neil is trying to get people to formulate concrete ideas and use them in a progressive way. People who don’t wish to see any value in other’s perspectives will always have “ivory tower platitudes”.

@@ryanhilts3454 How about his idea that every incorrectly spelled word be judge on a subjective sliding scale? Grading a spelling test may take about half an hour for a teacher. Tyson's wonderful idea would make a half hour chore in a week's project. This addled buffoon is obviously living in an ivory tower.

@@zeynand4039 Putting on a show and actually teaching stuff are two different things. He'll tell you we're made of star stuff or talk about how a black hole would spaghettify you. But when he tries to teach an equation he often gets it completely wrong. You need to learn the material before you teach it. I would like to see him grade spelling tests the way he advocates.

You make no sense, I pray that your just trying to troll other intellectuals. I believe he was just explaining the importance of creativity and how it can be repressed in settings where there is typically one answer questions. Instead of processing and acting on information, children are taught to study and memorize instead of understand synsethize.

@@ryanhilts3454 its a terrible example. The inability to agree on truths is one of the largest problem in our society right now and this guy wants to further it down to spelling. There isa time and place for creativity. Spelling isnt it. First you learn the basics spelling, then you can be creative with the advanced. Creative writing. In all walks of life creativity comes after understanding of fundamentals.
@ryanhilts3454
@ryanhilts3454 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with it being a terrible example considering what you stated about needing to understand fundamentals before being creative when it comes to spelling. It didn’t seem you were being critical in your comment and I was being a keyboard warrior 3 months ago for whatever reason. If your reply was what you posted first I would’ve probably agreed then. I apologize for being disrespectful if I gave the impression that I was.
