Well, it’s the end of the year and Neil deGrasse Tyson has some thoughts. On our last StarTalk Explainer of 2020, Neil and comic co-host Chuck Nice look back on the year and explore some science you might not know that surrounds the holiday season.
Neill reflects back on The Great Conjunction, the “meeting” of Jupiter and Saturn in the night sky. We discuss why, in the northern hemisphere, this time of year has the shortest days. Then, Neil tells us why New Year’s Eve is a “time-zone charade”.
Find out why we have to move the South Pole every year on New Year’s. Neil also tells us why he’s upset about the inaccurate depictions of Santa’s workshop. All that, plus, Neil reminds us to have a Merry Perihelion!

@richardgratton7557
@richardgratton7557 3 жыл бұрын
When you move 10 miles away from the south pole, it doesn't matter what direction you take because you are heading straight north. Then you head east for 10 miles east (or west, it doesn't matter) you are still 10 miles north of the south pole. So when you then go south for 10 miles you get back to the south pole, which is where you were when you started. You have traveled in a triangle on a sphere (which the Earth is!). Happy New Year 2021 from Québec!

Picture a beach ball. Imagine placing your finger on one of the "end" points where all the different colors meet. Now, along the seam between any two colored sections, draw a line with your finger four inches long. Then, from that point, move straight _across_ to the left until you reach the next seam. Finally, turning left again, follow that seam for four inches. You've just made a 270-degree Non-Euclidean triangle...and ended up right back where you started.

You two bring to the rest of us an amazing way of looking at the life around us. Such clarity and also one of those "ah ha" moments that I wish I had in days in school. At least now, after watching your videos, I can pass those "ah ha" moments on to the young ones that aren't being exposed to it where they should...thank you to both of you

Luv the simple, relaxed, normal banter of real ideas without over-intellectualizing. Knowledge & facts only rise to wisdom when we can integrate them in our understanding. These two make that process enjoyable

If the Earth is closest to the Sun in December, does the Southern hemisphere have hotter Summers than the Northern hemisphere?
@janette6
@janette6 3 жыл бұрын
I think that still depends on the distance of the location from the equator. Australia gets super hot, but the summers in NZ are cooler than in Europe. I read the UV is 7% higher at Perihelium which finally explains to me why Austalians and New Zealanders have such high rates of skin cancer.

I hope you understand seasons are caused by the tilt in earth's axis and not cuz it's closer or farther from the sun.

A minor nitpick: the south pole brain teaser - go 10 miles north, 10 miles east, then 10 miles south, and end up were you started - actually has infinitely many solutions near the north pole. The "10 miles east" just needs to comprise an integer number of rotations around the Earth after going 10 miles north.

Love you guys, watched just about every video you put out. First got to know Chuck on the 10,000 Teachers webinar back in October, seems such a long time ago. I've been watching Neil on the Cosmos show since a few years back. It's been in interesting year, looking forward to a bright new year. Merry Perihelion from Indonesia.

Happy New Year in advance to Dr Tyson & Chuck Nice. Please keep sharing your wisdom as always. 1 suggestion for an explainer - Why does water flow in Clockwise/ Counter Clockwise movement down the sink depending on your location above and below the equator?
