"NASA got founded on the fear factor of Sputnik" People need to remember this history. Too many think that NASA was founded because we had The Right Stuff and were uncontrollably awesome; that we did these things, as JFK said, not because they were easy, but because they were hard. But the reality is that while we were kicking back congratulating ourselves after WWII, and putting some of the Smart Germans we had acquired as a result of that war to work building The Bomb, Russia had taken the Smart Germans they had acquired and told them to instruct a new generation of Smart Russians. And when those Russians put Sputnik in orbit, we were terrified: were they spying on us? Preparing to drop the bomb on us? (They were doing neither of those things with Sputnik; they were just exploring the newest final frontier.) Eisenhower created NASA on the spot, but we were unprepared in the skills we needed to create the future... we lacked the Smart Americans needed to counter the Smart Russians. But a few years later the Russians put Yuri Gagarin in space, and (after we changed out of our freshly-soiled shorts) even JFK - a staunch opponent of 'wasteful' space programs - decided we needed to do the only thing the Russians *hadn't* done yet, and put someone on the moon. There was a lot of flag-waving and a surge of national pride, but the real reason we went to the moon was not simply that we were awesome, but that it would be a propaganda coup in the Cold War. One thing this new commitment to going to space resulted in was a change in our education system. People who started school in the 60s probably recall - likely with a PTSD-induced tremor - learning 'New Math', a grade-school curriculum of set theory, modular math, matrix math, Boolean logic, and non-base-10 math, modeled after the college-level math the Smart Germans were teaching in their effort to make the kind of Smart Russians who could, e.g. put Sputnik and Yuri Gagarin in orbit. The other result was that people who were slightly older, who had already finished grade-school, and who had an interest in science but were not yet old enough and cynical enough to see JFK's speech for the propaganda it was, heard the call and stepped up to the plate to become the scientists and engineers and, eventually, astronauts that we would need in our glorious new space-faring future. Those people got their university degrees in aeronautics and math and electrical/mechanical/chemical engineering, then showed up to build the space program that would take us to the stars at the exact moment that our politicians turned into bureaucrats and the Cold War died down. If our space-faring efforts had been based on how intelligent, dedicated, and awesome these people were, we would have colonized Mars by now. But those efforts were actually driven by propaganda and fear, without which we had nothing. Once we were more afraid of stock market crashes than we were of the Russians, nobody cared about space anymore. And the Smart Americans, the people who had heard the call and done the work to become the builders of the future, realized that the dream that had inspired them was just a dream. Most of them have been lurching around in a fugue state ever since... Robert Zubrin, the co-creator of Mars Direct and the creator (and President) of the Mars Society, is basically the poster child for these people, who discovered too late that the focus and idealism that JFK demanded were no longer needed, and had never really been about getting us to the stars. Our goal as a nation was never to go that high; all we really wanted was to get higher than the Russians, so we could resume kicking back and congratulating ourselves on how awesome we were.

Well said. I would add that when we had reached the peak of the mountain, and saw that no one else was standing with us, let alone trying to climb to higher peaks, we stopped trying to go higher. We also became content in our position, and lazy, which brought disaster. I was a kid in elementary school when the Challenger blew up, and that seemed to put a fear in us. Space exploration is dangerous, and we had forgotten that fact. Some years later, the Columbia was destroyed upon re-entry, again, reminding us that complacency in our position atop the mountain could lead to disaster. The result is that we stopped our manned space program just a few years later. I think this will be incredibly disastrous, assuming someone else doesn't try to reach a higher peak. We need heroes. Probably no one can name a single satellite that launched into space last year, but everyone knows Sputnik. Name the 50th person to go to space. We can't do it. But Yuri Gagarin, we all know he was first. Very few people know the name of the 7th person to step on the moon, but all over the world, people know the name Neil Armstrong. Who will be first to step foot on Mars? Will we find life on Titan or Europa? these are the questions we should be asking. These are the goals we should be striving for, racing for. If we stay content to sit here, on Earth, we are doomed. Our future, if any can exist, exists among the stars. For we are the music-makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.

Very well said, I think it always and it always makes me sad that the people of today care very little for the future. Politicians and greedy men care only for the immediate payoff the immediate gratification. I love the quote and wish everyone would know and learn it: “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”

I think it depends on what exactly China shows they are capable of. IIRC they are planning on moon landers, capable of bringing back samples, a permanent space station in orbit, a Mars rover, and eventually in another 30-40 years (give or take) a possible manned mission to Mars. I believe they became the third nation to put a human into space in just 2003. Most of this is the sort of thing where we would simply welcome them atop the mountain with us. As for a manned mission to Mars (in another 30-40 years, maybe), that isn't the sort of thing that would make us jump up and start a manned program to Mars in the next couple of years. I also seem to recall Dr. Tyson saying if we really, really wanted to, we could have a man on Mars within 5 years, maybe less (I don't seem to remember exactly where I heard him say it. Probably one of the many podcasts he has been on.). So, in a hypothetical scenario where China shows that they are capable of keeping an astronaut alive in space for extended periods of time, and if they show that they have developed sufficient rocket technology that proves reliable enough to get someone to Mars and back, and if they show or say that this is a goal they are going to achieve by some set time in the future (let's say 2030), and IF we have a President who leads the nation in a similar manner that Kennedy did, basically saying something akin to, "We need to flex our muscle and show the world that we are still the leaders of space exploration." then yes, we might be spurred on by a sense of nationalism that would lead us to be the first to Mars. However, China has a long way to go before they are ready for that type of mission. Without someone else trying to beat us to the finish line, we seem content to hang out and wait.

One must point out, the step into the universe, the space program, the terraforming of other planets, the search for life from other worlds. All these are discoveries only done ONCE and only ONCE. They are a ONE TIME PAYMENT. This ticket, however, lets humanity take a step in the next stage of our maximum potential. Hell yeah if they say we will pay ANYTHING. Just look at all the things politicans argue about budgetary cuts. Military, bailout funds, heck even social security and universal healthcare. Say for a moment a nuclear disaster happens, and humans dissappear, all these spending will and are forever for NOTHING. Aliens will come to out planet and see nothing but ash and rubble. Indeed a shame that all the economic wealth humans toil and work for have generated, have only been redirected into purposes that do not even extend their use beyond the next century. Its as if we're working for nothing.

Tim Horton I disagree that religion is completely useless, or atleast the theory behind it isn't (a human being born unpure, will find satisfaction through labor and then reach a promise land) but in general I agree with you. Space travel is so passé, quantum mechanics and particle accelerators are what's in now. Really, what can we hope to achieve by littering space with billion dollar crap? I mean I understand if it's to explore something like the seas of Europa for life. But honestly understanding the fundamental building blocks of our universe is far more important and deserves much more attention. _Instead of fear of it being a Black Hole generator_...
@CONTRAband86010 жыл бұрын
In my mind, it's less about filling the skies with junk, and more about learning to dream as a nation again. Shocking the imaginations of the collective minds of the world into dreaming again. Turning our focus less on money and more on building a better future, advancing into the age of technology that the people of the 60's, 70's, 80's, even up to the 90's thought we would be at by 2004. I don't know, I completely agree, understanding the building blocks of our universe is incredibly important, but to be able to expand our reach, to jump start our world to the world that we've only dreamed about as kids, the world it's capable of becoming seems just as important as that.
@LordBilliam10 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing you don't find your GPS useful then, because that's a direct result of all that "billion dollar crap" up there. You must also not enjoy watching satellite television, live international sports events, use a mobile phone, watch a weather report, or use Google maps. And you must think that advance warning of tidal waves, forest fires, oil spills etc is a waste of time. All of those require satellite technology. On top of that, NASA research led to LEDs, solar power, cordless vacuums, freeze dried foods, loads of safety improvements that are used in modern air travel, and improvements to artificial limbs and heart pumps. Space travel is not just about dreaming and discovery, it results in practical technologies that have huge effects on everyone.
@TheRealHelvetica10 жыл бұрын
***** Again, so passé... I won't deny space travel was an important time in our history, but what's the value of returning when it seems like we already engineered everything we could from it? Why pour money into something that's old and busted when amazing new discoveries are being made right here on Earth? Yes we can thank NASA for a lot of things today, but you'll be thanking Brookhaven National Laboratory and CERN for whatever new technologies come from their discoveries.
@CONTRAband86010 жыл бұрын
Now now, I wouldn't go so far as to say that we've engineered absolutely everything that we can from space flight. There's still so many things out there that we can discover. Practical radiation shields, for one. The biggest issue we have with space flight today is the fact that interplanetary space is simply too irradiated to safely travel through. Developing shielding from this could have an immeasurable practical use in our lives down here. More efficient rocket engines/engines in general would be another thing that we would see with an enhanced space flight program. This could lead to cleaner, more efficient fuel consumption, harnessing different materials for energy, among other things. Heck, if we could set up a permanent base on the moon, or even a colony, the possibilities of what we could accomplish would be near endless. The untapped, undiscovered resources on the moon, the enhanced possibility for an increased human population. Studies in gravity, gravity generators, artificial, self sustaining eco systems. I could go on! All in all, I would just like to submit that space flight isn't all that useless and outdated as you would like to believe ^_^
@GenesisZero6610 жыл бұрын
Helvetica Neue I'm sorry but I disagree with you completely. There is much to gain from going to space. Hell the concept of colonization should be enough to make you want to fund the program at least until we get to that point. And as Will Parker mentioned we gain valuable pieces of technology just from working, not actually doing but from working, on space exploration. While there are fantastic things to be learned here on Earth, you can't tell me that there is nothing fascinating to learn out there.

Marchant2 Texas needs to go back to a Constitutional Republic. Transcend our environment. Through balance and knowledge. The cattle mentality of we need to survive through breeding and prostrations to follow. Instead of adapting and leading. There is a difference between a human and human being. Forcing the dreamers to be muzzled and live among sheep. I know many human beings living responsible with choices and lifestyles for a balance towards this earth. Our leaders should not feel comfortable with their decisions leaning against dreaming and ingenuity . Their decisions are putting our species in a dangerous situation. It is a form of crime, against humanity !!

Astronaut John Glenn (who is in the video) would have laughed at *you*. I laugh ruefully at materialists--including Neil deGrasse Tyson--who speak with such...religious passion and conviction about dreams and tomorrow and the universe, because if their philosophy is correct, nothing matters, and existence is futile. Even if interstellar travel (for human beings, not just robot probes) enables Earth life to be "transplanted" on Earth-like planets of other, younger stars in order to survive the death of the Sun, on one distant day all of the stars will have burned out, and no more hydrogen to produce new stars will be left. No matter how grand a galactic civilization Man--or a descendant race--may have built by then, it and they will all die in the heat death of the increasingly dark, cold universe, and it will be as if life never arose at all. It won't matter if we were kind or cruel, lazy or industrious, or whether or not we explored and settled other worlds; the end will be the same...nothingness.

I just want to see humans become space dwelling in my lifetime. That's my only wish. Forget war, forget hate, forget politics. It's all bullshit. The universe was here way before us and it's calling for us to explore it. There aren't many dreamers left because people have tricked themselves into caring about petty things. We kill each other either over resources or because of pointless squabbles. We have an infinite source of everything we need. We just need to leave Earth. We are capable of going so far and the only thing stopping us is ourselves.

Damn that useless war in Vietnam! And the men who got us into it and continued it. Those monies could have been used to further our space program. AND we could have had the SST> the Supersonic Transport that would have been so more better and much more practical than that pretentious Concorde. I truly believe, we, as a country, and society, would be in such a better place, socially, politically, economically, scientifically and technologically. If we hadn't wasted our men/women, talent, resources on that god damn war! We were so beaten and tired of 10 years of involvement in Southeast Asia we lost our drive, our ambition, our perspective for the future. And one of the tragic losses was cutting the funding for space exploration. Think about it. We might be beyond exploring Mars with man/woman piloted spacecraft and beyond. We might even be flying hypersonic jets.Capable of flying from New York to Singapore in 2 hours! We lost so much prestige and standing in Vietnam. What a tragedy! But.......I do have hope for the future! Thank you, Dr. Tyson. A very wise man.

It's brilliant how a bit of imagery, a dash of edited sound bites, and some well chosen music can make a 5 minute video such a concentration of art. That's not to say this is your best work, because I don't know if it is, I just got to your channel, but this particularly hit me at the moment he was talking about cutting into a dollar. You did a good job getting the music and image to match with that specific moment, and the rest was pretty good too, but I just find it fascinating to see how this is such a powerful tool in the hands of non-professionals to get an idea across. It's like digital poetry: concentrated videography.

I think its obvious why we stopped dreaming but Neil doesn't exactly point it out in this video at least. Religion and pseudoscience and everything like it hinders thinking and ultimately growth of the human experience.
@ilikegearsofwar311 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? I'm not saying we should scapegoat religion, even if it causes problems and is based on belief without evidence. I'm just saying religion hinders us all and gets us no where as far as making life better (yeah pray for me i'll think for you, etc) Also don't get me started on politics and the federal reserve banking system.
@TheDarthghost111 жыл бұрын
I fail to see how you can justify saying that all religion hinders thinking. Protestants developed most of our research into genes and genetics. A Catholic priest first came up with the Big Bang Theory. Greek pagans paved the foundations for math. On multiple instances, Apollo astronauts would read from the Bible to millions of listeners back home. Jewish scientists split the atom. People like you, blinded by their hatred of difference, become the very thing they claim to oppose. Ignorant.
@ilikegearsofwar311 жыл бұрын
I speak of the ignorant biblical literalists. And a catholic priest came up with the big bang through scientific study, and yet so many catholics don't even believe in the big bang. The zealots, think before you post.
@ilikegearsofwar311 жыл бұрын
Men believed what they did in their time and did what they did. We live in the 21st century. It is foolish to hold on to modern myths. Do I promulgate violence against religious people? No. That is wrong. Religion does more harm than good.
@ilikegearsofwar311 жыл бұрын
Why would you classify people based on the religion they were born into? Einstein was supposedly Jewish, he wasn't even religious. Do smart people become hindered by religion? No. Should we teach myths to children so they can explain everything with god did it? No. The extraordinary people don't take religion seriously. The common people will go around believing whatever nonsense they are told without thinking. You do understand over 40% of people in america don't accept evolution as a fact because it goes against their religion? Yeah okay.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is important because of how powerful his speech is. It moves people, it gets them to think. We need more science educators like him. People who encourage exploration into science by showing how cool science can be. People don't wanna know that the vector sum of all forces divided by mass gives acceleration. They wanna know how crazy shit gets near a black hole. And the only way to get people to learn the hard stuff is to show them the exciting stuff.

I'm in a really abstract D&D campaign right now, based in the modern world, and we came across this astral version of an Apollo command module with the "big bad" in it. He was in a vintage space suit, talking about how the future all came to a halt and how he became jaded because humanity stopped dreaming. My DM had never seen this and she didn't even know it was the anniversary of Apollo 11, and had never really thought of how civilization has progresed (or not) since the moon landings. I just showed her this video and now she's completely freaked out.

I only wish that I could share the love and passion I have for science. Neil DeGrasse Tyson voices it better than I ever could. Not just the discoveries, or answering questions, but finding new questions to ask, knowing that there's always more to know, that there's always more to discover. Discovery has fueled our species to where we have arrived today, and that momentum is slowing down, rapidly. I only want to bring that desire for discovery back to the people, to the youth.

I talked to someone about what Neil Degrasse Tyson said, increasing the budget for NASA. What he said was that it isn't enough to just increase the budget, that private enterprise does what it wants to, including NASA. He also said that it wouldn't necessarily have the effect Neil says it would because of that. I believe this is why the budget increase isn't happening. Not only because people stopped dreaming, but because they don't have faith in the idea. The guy I talked with, an everyday guy, said that an increased budget would only give NASA money to buy golf courses, a bigger cafeteria, and fund things that wouldn't be beneficial to space exploration. And THAT'S the root of the problem, I think. People have no faith that NASA will use the budget to further the exploration of space, and in turn provide a boom in the market for more scientists in the field. Not everyone, but clearly some people do. And Neil talked about this as well, that PEOPLE need to be educated on the true importance of this, not private enterprise. Because as it stands, PEOPLE don't believe it will benefit mankind, and our economy. And yes, private enterprise is corrupt and out for #1 in making money, so it isn't baseless that people would think this. But they also don't understand that private enterprise is a very adaptable source. It plays to what would make the money. And the money comes from human interest. If people showed a bigger interest towards the effects space exploration and technological advancement OUTSIDE of the newest Apple product, the money will follow.

The great thing about Neil is this. He's speaking from a position of passion, space is Neil's passion, people don't go into stem fields to work and collect a check. Talk to anyone who is in a stem field, they love what they do, it's what they live for. Like myself for instance, I'm studying to get a degree in welding.
