The bridge in the album version is delivered with much greater intensity than this performance, the entire mood changes and it's heavily percussion driven which is missing here. You're right, this is mellow - one of the very few occasions where I think the album is demonstrably better.

Great band musically, unfortunately their songs are riddled with shitty lefty fluff in some of their lyrics such as the Christians in this example. The context being dust from a sun - something cataclysmic but highly unlikely, equally such is the basis of Christianity. A typical cheap shot at Christianity because they didn't have the spine to make reference to any other religion (not on own but hardly the harbinger of truth) fully knowing Christians have the fortitude to absorb digs at their faith while a lot of others don't.

The other two guys are also songwriters, they would've been performing their own songs as well. They were Graham Gouldman of 10cc and Roddy Frame of Aztec Camera. Oh, and the studio version of "Distant Sun" is great, the bass line when it kicks in adds a lot!

This version is diffrent, that's all. I love this acoustic version. You would feel diffrently listening to it performed live in an intimate setting, say a campfire or someone's livingroom.

It's baffling why people still continue to listen to (contextually) sub-par live versions of tracks before they ever listen to the fully fleshed-out album cut. You really do need to listen to the studio/album version of Distant Sun first to get a real feel for the song as it's one of CH's best. Basically.... never listen to a live version of anything unless a lot of people specifically suggest that it's worth listening to before the studio cut.

Liner notes by a music critic on their compilation album talked of the lyric "I don't pretend to know what you want, but I offer love" and compared that to a story in the autobiography of Spike Milligan (UK comedian from decades ago) when he was going thru a complete nervous breakdown, was in the foetal position on the floor crying his eyes out, and his 4yo daughter came silently into the room to bring him a glass of water... both the saddest and the most uplifting of moments, like a lot of CH songs.

Yes. Way more than Tim, although Tim was the one to cut out of Split Enz, and only then realised how much more valuable Neil was to his success than he had understood to that point. Doh! (No question that Tim is the stronger entertainer - I have heard much criticism about Neil's lack of emotional display as a front man, BUT he absolutely makes up for his lack of front with his insane songwriting skills! 💕)

Che Fu was the lead singer, and a thoroughly nice guy. In the 1990's I was a youth worker in New Zealand, and lived in a small town of just over 1500 people. So I thought I'd give it a crack and see whether he would be keen to put on a concert for the kids. All 13-16, no alcohol. He came and did a concert and every kid came and he never charged a cent.

To me, Crowded House is like the grown up version of Split Enz but I have to admit that I still love Split Enz more. Their music is so catchy and clever. If you get a chance to check out I Hope I Never I think you will like it. It's a great break up song to belt out at two AM while you drown your sorrows.

Thanks for the reaction. This is my favourite CH track but agree with the sentiment of others in that this live acoustic performance lacks the punch of the studio version where percussion is king. Would recommend reacting to the studio version Nick, perhaps as a comparison of what you've already heard in this live acoustic rendition.
