I truly think that this is a majorly a misunderstood poem. Although it may seem he is making a joke of depression, self-harm and suicide- he is not. He is describing the fact that people overly-romanticize all the above nowadays yet they say it's worth it because someone finally listens. This poems is about how people fuck up their own lives for the attention they want. It's how being un-happy in this world can get you more love and caring from others than being happy does. When your sad, self-harming: people worry. They kiss your scars, tell you it gets better. /That's/ his point.

I saw perform this, along with OCD, The Future, Joey, and many more last night and he was amazing. He was so hilarious and kind. Honestly one of my favorite poets

When i first listened to this poem. I got so offended. I was like "wow youre just making fun of them". And then i thought maybe i was wrong because id heard his other poems so i knew it had a deeper meaning. So i listen to it more, and then i understand. "You have scars and everyone wants to kiss them" "you are so brave, and they want to be brave just like you" its like, no one cares unless youre depressed. No one is there when youre happy. No one cares if you post something saying "wow im happy right now" they only care if you say "i wanna kill myself" then a hundred people come to say "wait no we love you" and "oh you are so brave and inspirational" do you get me? People should be ther even if youre not depressed, and i think this poem is more true than any ive listened to

if you don't know, this guy has ocd and here he tells how the disease ruined his life. have a listen to step 5 where he says to create a fake mental disease and step 10 where he says to write a poem and shout it to strangers.

I love this poem and this red head chick does one. She reads it off of yellow paper and she talks about her small accomplishments. It's sweet and its deep if you can see what it means. I feel you can only truly understand it if you have been in a similar situation.

This poem is so true. The ending hit me so hard; losing everything you love. I interpreted this poem as a message saying "Depression(mental conditions, hope I didn't offend someone) is not a beautiful thing, it sucks". Am I the only one who thinks that social media has made sadness or whatever more... Valuable or Sensionalized (can't find the correct word)... Than happiness? When I was in my darkest time, I had a lot of people who "cared" but was pushed away from me. Now that I feel not sad (so I guess I am happy), no one is actually there for me..... I lost everything that I love. Is it worth it? I don't know. I truly want to believe that everything was worth it because now I can understand people better and it has shaped me. To all the people who are trying to gasp for air or just having a bad day, to everyone or any one. You have a unique purpose in this life; a divine worth. Please remember, never let go of the people who mean most. Remember, you are important, that you do matter.

This is such great commentary. I don't think he is mocking anybody. He is saying how this world has turned pain into something necessary for art versus art being a way to deal with pain. The world has it upside down and backwards, the world thrives on pain instead of love.

Never has a truer word been spoken. This generation relies on sadness as a means to improve ones popularity. If you want to be noticed, you have to have a past worth mentioning. People don't seem to realise that sadness does not equal success, and people don't seem to care when you're genuinely happy. Because that isn't interesting. People are programmed to fix things, and if they cant fix you, they wont see you. The problem is when you need help, no one is around. They only want to 'fix' you, when you're already broken.

This is brilliant. I did this to myself because it's too hard to be interesting, or "deep" without just being sad. I didn't even realize what I was doing. And I wish that I had a beautiful way of warning people not to do it like he does. Because being sad for no reason besides the fact that it paints a pretty picture is pathetic. Happiness is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Holding myself accountable for who I am, and how my life really is going, is the best fucking thing that's ever happened to me.

Personally, I felt like he was referring to his OWN feelings. Most depressives tell themselves all the same things he was discussing. He spoke it as someone who has felt those things, realizes how absurd it is, & still struggles with it all.

this poem is meant to be satire, commenting on people romanticizing depression/ other mental disorders. romantitization of mental disorders is incredibly harmful and what Neil is trying to do here, is illustrate that.

I love this so much. People who are I'm pain make beautiful art about their pain and people love that art, sure. But then they try to pretend that they love the person or that they give a shit about that person's pain. All the sudden their love for your art is a love for your pain and it's all completely absent of anyone actually giving a fuck about you.
