@@wickedromantik so my understanding is they did date again and she actually saw him perform this poem but also they broke up again and then dated again and then broke up again. There was a lot of “lying and making each other miserable” Neil also implied that she either never loved him or cheated on him but I’m not positive which. They were friends for a while after but idk if they still are. A long time later Neil got engaged and later married and I think him and his wife are still together

I had a girlfriend and she had severe OCD. I was one of the very few people she could hug or touch without being uncomfortable. We broke up a while ago and the other day I was walking by her and accidentally brushed by her and she instantly started rubbing the area of her arm that I had touched. It was in that moment that I realized she didn't love me anymore, so that one line at 1:48 completely broke me down.

The first time I saw her... Everything in my head went quiet. All the tics, all the constantly refreshing images just disappeared. When you have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, you don't really get quiet moments. Even in bed, I'm thinking: Did I lock the doors? Yes. Did I wash my hands? Yes. Did I lock the doors? Yes. Did I wash my hands? Yes. But when I saw her, the only thing I could think about was the hairpin curve of her lips. Or the eyelash on her cheek- the eyelash on her cheek- the eyelash on her cheek. I knew I had to talk to her. I asked her out six times in thirty seconds. She said yes after the third one, but none of them felt right, so I had to keep going. On our first date, I spent more time organizing my meal by color than I did eating it, or fucking talking to her... But she loved it. She loved that I had to kiss her goodbye sixteen times or twenty-four times if it was Wednesday. She loved that it took me forever to walk home because there are lots of cracks on our sidewalk. When we moved in together, she said she felt safe, like no one would ever rob us because I definitely locked the door eighteen times. I'd always watch her mouth when she talked- when she talked- when she talked- when she talked when she talked; when she said she loved me, her mouth would curl up at the edges. At night, she'd lay in bed and watch me turn all the lights off. And on, and off, and on, and off, and on, and off, and on, and off, and on, and off, and on, and off, and on, and off, and on, and off, and on, and off, and on, and off, and on, and off. She'd close her eyes and imagine that the days and nights were passing in front of her. Some mornings I'd start kissing her goodbye but she'd just leave cause I was just making her late for work... When I stopped in front of a crack in the sidewalk, she just kept walking... When she said she loved me her mouth was a straight line. She told me that I was taking up too much of her time. Last week she started sleeping at her mother's place. She told me that she shouldn't have let me get so attached to her; that this whole thing was a mistake, but... How can it be a mistake that I don't have to wash my hands after I touched her? Love is not a mistake, and it's killing me that she can run away from this and I just can't. I can't - I can't go out and find someone new because I always think of her. Usually, when I obsess over things, I see germs sneaking into my skin. I see myself crushed by an endless succession of cars... And she was the first beautiful thing I ever got stuck on. I want to wake up every morning thinking about the way she holds her steering wheel. How she turns shower knobs like she's opening a safe. How she blows out candles- blows out candles- blows out candles- blows out candles- blows out candles- blows out… Now, I just think about who else is kissing her. I can't breathe because he only kisses her once - he doesn't care if it's perfect! I want her back so bad... I leave the door unlocked. I leave the lights on.

"How can it be wrong when I don't have to wash my hands after I touch her?" I've suffered from severe OCD for 24 years, moderate 3, and finally mild for 3... and that quote nearly made me break down. Lived that quote. Painful to remember. I am so thankful I've worked hard and come so far. Still, I can feel that pain of suffering. Imprisoned by the stupid rules that only exist in your own mind. I honestly wonder how many of my friends and loved ones now would still like me if I was the man I was 6 years ago.

Look, I’ve listened to poetry a lot over the years. A LOT. And I keep coming back to this poem, because I believe it is the closest I’ve ever seen a poem come to absolutely perfect. The delivery is unique and fantastic. The topic is incredibly interesting. The flow is so easy. It doesn’t use gimmicks like preaching on social agendas or resorting to extremely controversial messages to draw you in. You’re excited about the skill of the poet and the way he presents things. It’s just a fantastic poem and I hope that they still have this one logged somewhere 100 years from now.

This a a transcript of the poem entitled, "OCD" by Neil Hillborn. This is a public service, and I do not claim any connection to this poem, the poet, or this youtube channel. *I apologize that the format of this transcript makes this comment a little long, but it's the writing format that I use for my own spoken word poetry on my KZbin channel. Enjoy! 💓💙 -The first time I saw her -Everything in my head went quiet. -All the ticks, -All the constantly refreshing images just disappeared. -When you have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, -You don’t really get quiet moments. -Even in bed, I’m thinking: -Did I lock the doors? Yes. -Did I wash my hands? Yes. -Did I lock the doors? Yes. -Did I wash my hands? Yes. -But when I saw her, the only thing I could think about was the hairpin curve of her lips, -Or the eyelash on her cheek, -The eyelash on her cheek, -The eyelash on her cheek. -I knew I had to talk to her. -I asked her out six times in thirty seconds. -She said yes after the third one, -But none of them felt right, so I had to keep going. -On our first date, I spent more time organizing my meal by color than I did eating, -Or fucking talking to her. -But she loved it. -She loved that I had to kiss her goodbye sixteen times or twenty-four times if it was Wednesday. -She loved that it took me forever to walk home because there are lots of cracks on our sidewalk! -When we moved in together, -She said she felt safe, -Like no one would ever rob us because I definitely locked the door eighteen times. -I’d always watch her mouth when she talked, -When she talked, -When she talked, -When she talked. -When she said she loved me, -Her mouth would curl up at the edges. -At night, she’d lay in bed and watch me turn all the lights off, -And on, and off, -And on, and off, -And on, and off, -And on, and off, -And on, and off. -She’d close her eyes and imagine that the days and nights were just passing in front of her. -But some mornings, -I started kissing her goodbye but then she’d just leave because I was making her late for work. -When I stopped in front of a crack in the sidewalk, she just kept walking. -When she said she loved me, her mouth was a straight line. -She told me I was taking up too much of her time. -Last week she started sleeping at her mother’s place. -She told me that she shouldn’t have let me get so attached to her. -That this whole thing was a mistake, but... -How can it be a mistake when I don’t have to wash my hands after I touch her? -Love is not a mistake, -And it’s killing me that she can run away from this and I just can’t. -I can’t go out and find someone new, -Because I always think of her. -Usually, when I obsess over things, -I see germs sneaking into my skin. -I see myself crushed by an endless succession of cars. -And she was the first beautiful thing I ever got stuck on. -I want to wake up every morning thinking about the way she holds her steering wheel. -How she turns shower knobs like she opening a safe. -How she blows out candles, -Blows out candles, -Blows out candles, -Blows out candles, -Blows out... -Now, I just think about who else is kissing her. -I can’t breathe because he only kisses her once, -He doesn’t care if it’s perfect! -I want her back so bad, -I leave the door unlocked, -I leave the lights on.

I have OCD, sometimes I act like a robot short circuiting sometimes. For example, I might be getting dressed and I open my drawers and I close them, and then I open and close them and I keep doing that until I either snap out of it or someone tells me to stop. Sometimes my OCD acts up at school like when I'm getting my pencil case or my binder I would take it out and put it back in and repeat but while at school I stop my self quickly. All this time I felt kind of like a freak with this problem until today I told a friend of mine about this and he sent me this poem from this guy, when I was listening to the poem a few minutes ago I realized how it sounded a lot like what I'm going through. And now I feel happy, because i don't feel like I'm alone anymore. I cried my eyes out after it finished.

I see you're point, but I would go as far saying it's not anyone's fault. He never blamed her in this, I don't think she is to blame. She couldn't handle him, as some one with OCD (I admit not near this severe) I have a lot of "issues" some of my ex girlfriends have called cute. They're actually problems, but they are me. They can't handle me, and we split up. Usually I get dumped, but I don't resent them and they don't me. I get clingy cause of my OCD, I'm scared of separation. I've even been hospitalized. It's incredibly hard, to hold friendships let alone relationships. And its painful and hard but people like us realize its not any one's fault. Some thing's aren't meant to last, and that's sad and terrifying and painful but its a fact that cuts deep into us every waking moment.

This poem is beautifully written but what about this girl? Why is she the bad guy in this? The villian? She put herself before someone else for her own good. I understands this guy loves her, but how can people sit and say she was wrong to leave? Edit: This comment is in response to some of the other negative comments in this video regarding people blaming the woman, not about Neil Hilborn making her out in a negative way. Your lucky to not know what it's like to truly fall in love with someone who ends up leaving you. To put them into your heart, and mind as much as this man might've for this girl. The fact that she left just because he was "too much" for her. I completely understand what your saying, she isn't a horrible person for doing it. But it hurts. It hurts a lot! And I bet you've dealt with your share of break ups, or haven't, I don't know you. But I can almost 99.9999999% sure say you have felt TRUE heart break, where even years after the break up your heart still lingers on them. Now take that, and multiple that 100x...shit 1,000x's! And that's what his dealing with, and is articulating his emotion through poetry. If your going to look at the very surface of things, poetry isn't for you.
@Matt-kh6te

Brian Rothwell There's at least two sides to any story. I feel you but you insinuate too much. You can't understand the girl this poem is about just as much as you can't understand the girl that critiqued it. Keep an open mind and assume the best in people. It's good for you.

I can somewhat relate... I dont have OCD, but i have adhd and autism. For 12 years i was in a relationship and while things werent always perfect, i always thought we were happy and it would last forever. But around year 11 things went to shit as i finally got an official diagnosis. Even though i've been pretty much the same for years, her just hearing that things will never change. That same day she tried breaking up with me but i talked her out of it but things went downhill from there, until at year 12 she broke it off for real. That's 13 months ago and instead of getting over her i love her more... I'm not a social guy (not uncommon for autistic people) and even getting to meet her was a freak stroke of luck that is so unlikely it will ever happen again. Even if i ever start feeling something for another woman again, chances anyone else would want to be with a guy like me are slim to none.. But till that unlikely day, i still look out of the window, at every car, to see if it's hers. Every time my phone rings, i hope she is calling. I've changed so much, more then she probably ever thought i could change, but it does not matter. Cursed since birth

You see kids? This is how person with OCD looks like, behaves like and talks like. You don't have a fucking OCD if you see something that is not aligned properly. It's a terrible condition.

Actually most people are born with a very mild form of OCD. What he has is a severe case of it. Often most people only have a very mild form of OCD that often goes undiagnosed and undetected and quite usually it's just a single obsession. Like not wanting your food to touch, or always needing the toilet paper to be in one direction, or even just having a specific mandatory order of getting ready in the morning. So although you are probably correct in saying that wanting to fix something that is out of order is not OCD. I also don't think it's fair for you to be so dismissive of milder forms.

Fire Penguin Disco Panda There are different types and levels of OCD. Just because someone doesn't behave and talk the way he does, doesn't mean they don't have OCD.

pennykanyaucat You are missing his point which is that people joke about having OCD like "I'm such a clean freak, I've got OCD!" when they have a limited understanding of the disorder and have never been diagnosed by an actual therapist.

thank you. i have OCD and have ever since i can remember. let me tell you, it is hell (although got easier w age) and had kept me from participating in many things that should've been fun as a kid.. and i kinda want to roll my eyes everytime someone says "I'm SO OCD! I LIKE things neat and clean!" bc if people joke always around about it, when someone who actually has the disorder mentions they have it many people won't take them seriously

He actually does have Obssessive Cumpulsive Disorder he just exaggerates his symptoms when he's doing this poem. Makes the more publicly understood symptoms more visible.

I've never seen anyone without OCD be able to understand its problems at all, let alone to this level. It would be practically impossible to put this kind of act on!

TigsAndKizzii I am afraid you're wrong. There are very creative people out there and Neil is one of them. All of his poems are executed extremely well, he immerses himself in them which, along with his imagery and descriptions, make them very believable.

This video makes me so sad everytime I watch it! You can just see the longing in his eyes as he talks about her and how frustrated he got when he couldn't stop repeating a sentence. This was absolutely beautiful. I watched this video about a year ago and I just had to track it down again!

Rickai85 Thinking of love lost and yearning for the return is not stalkerish. Yes, people come and go . . . but some of them take your heart when they leave. Shrugging and going 'oh well' is not an option, OCD or not. This poem doesn't mention sitting outside her house and staring into her window, it doesn't mention him calling her 30 times a day, it doesn't mention him scaring her, it doesn't mention him following her. It talks about his feelings, that isn't stalkerish.

I watched this in health and I was about to cry, I was looking around for everyone to see if they even cared but no one had the reaction I did. I came back home and showed it to my mom and he's like my idol and it's the best speech I've seen. "He only kisses her one time, he doesn't care if it's perfect." "I leave the door unlocked." "I leave the lights on."

I don't know how long I've known this video... I don't have OCD, and maybe I don't understand it quite well, but damn... Everytime I watch this video, my heart breaks again and again. What I understand is having to love someone the only way you know and ca, and still not being understood... Yes, that last line breaks every person. And makes me think we can understand everyone now and then.
