In eighteen months Neil Kinnock has come from the political wilderness to within sight of Number 10 Downing Street. With his Labour Party more than twenty points ahead in the polls, and the Thatcher government stumbling from crisis to crisis, even Mr Kinnock’s critics are having to take him seriously as a potential Prime Minister.

Agreed. Kinnock was a good man, but was never going to make it to Number 10.

Roy Hattersley explained the problem kinnock had from the start that condemned his leadership to failure. 1) in 1983 when he won the leadership, labour was so far left that they would only have elected someone from the left. Kinnock had been known as being on the left. 2) because he was of the left, that meant that he could not win a general election. The public would not (and still won't) elect the labour left. 3) Kinnock realised this and knew labour had to move to the centre. This then left him open to the charge of abandoning his principles to win power. It was an impossible situation for him to be in, and to his credit he brought labour back from the dead.

@@tomgibson6801 Foot?! That commie moron. Did you love Corbyn too? Britain will never be Socialist! We have rejected it time and time again. The only time Labour perform well is when they stay close to centre. Having a leader who isn't a complete joke also helps.

HRHooChicken you mean New Labour which is in a way a Tory pro Thatcherite Party in disguise. It worked because it suited and served the interests of the oligarchs.
@HRHooChicken

@@Rosa_Amina It worked because like i said, Britain is not Socialist and never will be. We reject that ideology at every general election. I'm just excited to see the next goon you elect to be leader. Long Bailey would be amazing and would guarantee Boris at number 10 until 2030. Emily Thornberry is also a joke but more of an annoying joke rather than ha-ha funny.

What a phony Neil kinnock is hanging out with Nelson Mandela and doing the black power fist 👊 pump and look how he got with that reporting asking him about it he got very touchie about it when asked about the fist 👊 pump and saying he is a tough leader no he is a bully to his opponents in the labor party that opposed him from the left I agree with Claire short said it best he is just a control freak and a bully he is the godfather of New Labor loser just like Tony Blair and Gordon brown both Blair and brown became major control freak leaders and bully’s has well they learned that type of leadership from the Walsh wind bag Neil kinnock

Remember this was the same man that stood by and watched miss thatcher destroyed the miners union during the general strike 🪧 of 1984 and watched her destroy the whole labor movement in general because the whole time his whole agenda has leader was to attack the left in the labor party and attacking the unions instead of attacking miss thatcher for destroying the unions and the economy was going in the tank has well so yes mr kinnock did a good job helping miss thatcher destroyed the unions in a way he was her right hand man when u think about it that’s how New Labor was born to carry out Thatcherism out and they sure did carry out her policies that is why New Labor is labeled has the red Tories of the 1990,s and why since 2010 the Labor Party has been a joke the people can see right through the this party has a red Torie party and nothing else and yes Jeremy corbyn is a man of the left a fire brand of the left but he ended up just like Michael Foot being under minded by the right wing of the party and never supported but just like foot was left to fail and that was what happened to Jeremy corbyn he basically compermised to much just to get the blairites on his said all the time and yes in 2017 election they did very well in that election but still came up just short but the only reason is because the Tories where a busted flush and had a horrible leader in miss may who was the Tories version of a Neil kinnock type and then in 2019 election was a mass failure for the labor party there are many reasons the labor party lead by mr corbyn failed in this election 🗳 1 because the labor party did not have a clear message on policy’s at all the issues they where pushing I mean if u read the 2017 and 2019 manafestos they where true labor party election winners it was like I said very very poor messaging it all just sound bites in 2019 and the real big reason was on Brexit the labor party had no clear message where they stood on Brexit yes most of the labor party voted in favour of staying in the EU but made a huge mistake saying they would push for another referendum on the Brexit issue just pissed off the all of the labor party aka the red wall seats in the North of England aka the working class areas of the labor party.and the next Jeremy corbyn him self who in his past has always been a Euro sceptic who on the issue of Europe sold out to the right wing blairites and said he would support and campaign to stay in the EU witch shocked 😳 all the working class areas in the UK 🇬🇧 witch they never forgot and made him pay big time in 2019 election and voted for the Tories witch became the blue wall of the North of England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 aka the working class areas that always voted labor in the past just had enough of the labor party taking for granted that the labor party would vote for them no matter what well they got the ultimate shock in the 2019 election the far right populist wave 🌊 ran over the labor party and that is a big shame but I do not think the labor party learned a dam thing since the 2019 election because after they got rid of Jeremy corbyn they elected the block of wood keir stammer who is a big time push over and busted flush of a leader I have watched him in pm question time he looks so lost 😞 against bumbling Boris Johnson even has Boris Johnson just keeps shooting him self in the foot over and over and over and over and over again I fear with the block of wood in charge of the labor party they will still lose in the next election I do not trust polls saying that yes the labor party right now has a 16 point lead over the Tories I still don’t trust the polls they said the same thing back in 2017 election that the labor party had a lead going in that election and the labor party still lost to Theresa May yes Theresa May who did not even want to debate with Jeremy corbyn and ran a horrible if not the worst campaign in the history of UK 🇬🇧 election history and still won the election but just barely but still won the point I am making is that if miss May can win a dam election so can Boris Johnson who is the UKS version of Donald trump bumbling Boris can barely tie his own shoes and with all these party gates scandals and all the sleazy scandals rocking the Tories right now I still can see the labor party tripping over it’s self and still find a way to lose the next election to the worst prime minister in UK history Boris Johnson all because of that block of wood 🪵 in charge of the labor party in Keir stammer who is very horrible at debating and would make bumbling Boris look good witch is very sad 😢 for the useless labor party.

@@krisburgess2857 It's a shame Labour didn't have a figure as articulate as Tony Benn in 2017 or 2019. Jeremy Corbyn should have said he was anti-EU in principle, but didn't have the bottle to say so. Kinnock gave up everything he believed in and still didn't achieve power, so was left in the trashcan of history, unlike Tony Benn, whom one rrspects to this day, even if you didn't agree with him.

Had he not sadly passed away in 1994 he would have become Prime Minister in 1997 and been a far better one than Blair was. However i do think that Blair appealed to a lot of younger voters than maybe Smith would have.
