Scot here, it’s a real shame that any people from any part of our United Kingdom would have anti sentiments towards our fellow kin. We should all always remember, Scots, Irish, Welsh and English have fought side by side on many occasions for king and country, many of whom lost their lives, let us not forsake their sacrifices.

And being anti English isn't a phobia, a phobia is to fear something. As an Irishman, I don't fear England, I just hate the idea of a Monarchy ruling under dictatorship in this day and age, pretending to be superior because of a bloodline, hiding behind a parliament and a church, and people still fall for it. At least if they had the balls to say they are a dictatorship, I would have some respect for their honesty✌🏻 Same problem here in Ireland, the current government is not elected, the 2019 election was hijacked by the losers to form a majority. I have taken dumps I had more respect for.

Growing? I moved to Scotland (Fife) from England (N Yorkshire) when I was 2... and all through the 90s, 00s, 10s even now it's been a constant drum beat of bile, historical ignorance, inferiority complexes, xenophobia and just a blind hatred of people barely an hours drive away from most of the Scottish population, who have thousands of years of intertwined history and culture and to whom we're almost entirely financially reliant on (due to how badly the SNP have managed the economy, or have been pocketing money - like that £5bn in COVID funding that the auditors can't trace due to "data gaps") Oh and Colin. To Scottish Schools, it was "Banter" when someone smashed me in the head with a glass bottle as others threw rocks... There is no "Banter", many parts of Scotland (funnily enough those dominated by the SNP) are just hate-fuelled bigots who want to blame someone else for their own failings and decisions.

The poll tax issue in Scotland did not affect the rest of the UK one bit and had nothing to do with any final nail in her coffin. What she did in England did affect her, but certainly nothing that she did in Scotland. You're deluded if you don't know that there was a great deal of anti-English sentiment before Thatcher. I think that there is a friendly "banter" between scots and english in the main. But you cant deny that some people have an anti english or anti british stance by some people here in Scotland. This kind of thing exists across the globe to different levels. To be honest, Neil sums it up well. In a sports setting us scots see England as our rivals and its fierce, but no longer than the length of a rugby or football match. I indulge in that rivalry as much as anyone, but to take it past a sporting event is childish at best, or more worryingly deeper rooted. But people within the SNP are a different matter, its unquestionable that there is an anti english and anti british stance. Im no unionist, Im a proud scot. But I also understand that I am british and we all live together on this island. Ive met a far higher percentage of scots that I dislike than english people, but thats just my personal experience. Ian Blackford is one of the worst for the anti english stuff. He's consumed by bigotry and hatred so much that he's a laughing stock at Westminster, considering the other MPs and their work down there it takes some doing to be worse than the rest of that parliment! He represents Scotland there, and he portrays the very worst of us.

My dad was a staunch Labour voter of the 60's and 70's and well involved in the transport unions. He became disillusioned, as did many traditional Labour voters, because of this. They stopped concentrating on fair pay and conditions and morphed into activism and often mindless protest that would damage the very people they represented and the Labour Party followed suit. They currently appear more concerned with woke issues now which most voters really have no time for when trying to put food on the table.

I grew up in Corby, with a Scottish mother and an English father, I went to live with my Scots cousin, just south of Glasgow. This in the l970’s. I was happy to do any kind of work. I was at one point interviewed by a large committee from a local council, for a labouring job. I was told I was, “the wrong class of person.” Another interview brought forth the response, “there are no jobs for you here, you should go back to where you came from.” I neither speak with the accent of my mother or my father, the latter coming from another county. It was an accent, that was shared by all the children born to migrants in Corby, it owed little to the accents of our parents. However when we chose to sing Scottish or other folk songs, we knew how to produce the accents. Whilst living in Scotland I along with my cousin and his wife would attend Scots Nationalist Dances. Recent correspondence from my cousin’s wife, points to a change in her political viewpoint, as she proudly remembers her Scottish grandmother married a Cornish mine sinker. The feeling of being conflicted as to what country I was a citizen of, for I never felt quite English, for the accents of the towns and villages around us were different, but when in Scotland, I was always introduced by my Scottish cousins as their English cousin. From such complexity, I would always described myself as a citizen of the United Kingdom. As for my Scots physics master at school who always called me Richard rather than Robert, that’s a story for another day.

the actual votes they receive is only about 32 percent of the actual potential voters in scotland. The rest are split between the other main parties (who cant get their act together and stand down on some seats so there is only one clear pro union party to vote for) But in reality very few people bother to vote in scotland, so this vast majority and control of government in Scotland is actually achieved by a very small percentage of the potential voting public. An SNP supporter is more likely to ensure they get to the ballot box and see it as almost a freedom vote, where as a potential pro union voter wont have the same ambition to cast that vote or see it is a bit of a waste of time given the split votes and the snp voters always turning up. They are a noisy bunch the yes voters. However the silent majority do come out and vote when it really counts. Just a shame the snp and the cult following cant respect the choice of the nation when we voted no and now want infinite referendums until they get the result they want. I was born in Scotland and have lived in both England and Scotland but have an English accent. I had many Scottish friends in England, as well as Irish and Welsh. Apart from the friendly banter and calling Scots 'jocks' and Irish 'paddy' etc I never once saw or heard any hatred towards Scots. I watched as my local pub filled with English, wearing any type of tartan they could get to support Scotland in a football match. Moving back to Scotland, I have been at the end of some degrading, vile, and frankly nasty abuse for being English, even threatened with violence on several occasions. When I say I am Scottish and was born in Greenock, I nearly always get the same response, 'not with an accent like that!'. And my reply, 'is all that makes you Scottish your accent?'. This usually shuts them up! But, since the SNP came to power, I have seen firsthand the momentum of anti-english sentiment steadily rise and grow. It is a rhetoric practised by the SNP and encouraged within their supporters. Even police Scotland have reported a steady rise of anti-english hate, verbal abuse, vandalism, and actual bodily harm by Scots against English. This is how hitler caused the German public to hate the Jews, in almost exactly the same way. Coincidentally, hitler was the leader of a nationalist party! Sturgeon demands independence, at great cost and not just monetary, to Scotland. She thinks independence would mean a fairer Scotland free from Westminster rule. It would not be any fairer under independence, the same wealthy elite that ultimately control Westminster also control Scotland, the same corrupt banking system will also control Scotland. The SNP have 45 out of the 59 Scottish seats in Westminster, if they do not like or agree with how the current party, the Tories, run the UK, then force a change through parliamentary procedure, win the hearts and minds of the British people for fighting for the British people, force a change for the better in Westminster. But they don't; they just whine, complain, and collect their pay, expenses, and benefits happy to sit on the gravy train! This won't change if Scotland gets independence; the SNP and Sturgeons track record show this to be the case. she is every bit the liar, power-hungry despot Boris is! Sturgeon may have got a few things right, as pro-independant supporters love to point out, but what has been done right is far outweighed by what she has done wrong. It's a case that, even a broken clock is right at least once a day!

On occasion I’ve received some hostility, but often it’s the unusual way I dress, with wide-brimmed hats, berets and such that spark off the NEDs. I do speak somewhat posh for West Fife, so maybe it’s more of a class thing than anti-English? It is a bit hurtful on occasion and sometimes I have been tempted to ham-up a wee bit of a Scots lilt, but I think one needs to be confident and brave in the face of it, as there is no excuse for their meanness.

@@Support-your-local-team As Neil Oliver pointed out in the interview, Westminster is used as a proxy term. The SNP used explicitly anti-English rhetoric until the about the mid-1990s, claiming that Scotland was held under one-party English rule. Then it became London rule. And eventually Westminster rule. People have long memories, and are not fooled by such a shallow makeover.
@Support-your-local-team
@Support-your-local-team 2 жыл бұрын
@@minchul80 This is major clutching at straws. The SNP was completely irrelevant in the mid-90s. You'd probably find their policies on just about everything were massively different then to now. As for "Westminster rule", not only does that not sound anti-English to me but I can't find much evidence of it being used as a phrase. I'll remind you again that Westminster is based in London but should no more be considered an English institution than a Scottish or Welsh one, and your assumption that it's yours and not ours is the problem. The SNP were calling the Internal Markets Bill a "Westminster power grab" recently, but how is that anti-English (especially because it's clearly true)? For a party so hateful that there's 1,500 comments here alone calling them anti-English, it's amazing that the only "evidence" of this is people interpreting things they've said to put words in their mouth. The big irony here is that to most of these people Brexit was an independence movement of sorts which was absolutely fine, even though that campaign directly stoked up hatred of others. Could you imagine if the Yes side in the Scottish referendum ran on a pledge to remove non-Scottish Brits from Scotland? An Englishman in Scotland could vote in that referendum but a Scot in England couldn't, and yet independence is anti-English? Tell me how the Bulgarian and Polish people in the UK voted during Brexit? Oh wait they didn't get a vote, because the whole purpose of that was to kick them out. The double standards are unreal. Type "Bloody Nationalists" into Google images, that visualises the insanity of our situation.

@@Support-your-local-team Regardless of how popular the SNP were in the 1990s, it was the same people who blamed everything on Westminster who were castigating the English only a few years before. Most are still in the SNP now. How rare do you think the problem of Anglophobia really is in Scotland honestly? If you were to anonymously survey 100 English residents of Scotland, how many do you think would respond saying they had experienced anti-English abuse? Are you confident that they would make no connection at all with the rise of Scottish nationalism? The Labour Party also tried to brush allegations of anti-semitism within its ranks under the carpet. They rubbished the opinions of and bullied those who had experienced it, and indulged in exactly the same kind of whataboutery. The result was a full investigation by the EHRC (the only UK political party apart from the BNP to have had one), sacking of multiple staff, suspension of their own leader, payment of financial compensation, and a full and unequivocal apology from Kier Starmer. For a nationalist party that is desperately trying to rebadge itself as “progressive”, this really is the elephant in the room. The English are the largest “ethnic minority” in Scotland by a long shot. They could do a lot more damage to the fortunes of the SNP than the 300K British Jews, should they form a voting bloc or become more politically active.

Whilst living in England my Scots husband was overwhelmed by how well he was received as a Scot, and it made him reflect on how the Scots behave in those situations. Personally I've only experienced direct racism due to being English on three distinct occasions, one from a boars director and one from a young person not in employment or education. The other was a staunch SNP colleague who responded with vitriol the day after the referendum vote, stating 'are you happy you got what you want'...which was fascinating as I'd never openly stated my position, and ironically had voted for independence whereas hubby voted for the union. I regret my vote for independence which was based on a sense of justice and retribution, and based on what I've seen from the SNP and Sturgeon since will never consider voting for independence again. I've been to Scotland a few times; every 5 years or so since the late 90's. The first time I went I had no problem, I was a teenager and I bought a Scottish flag which I put on my wall when I got home (next to my English, Welsh and Northern Ireland flags). I felt a sense of kinship with the Scots; like they are our close cousins. I was glad they had kept a sense of identity and thought of them as equals in a union of countries. As the years progressed each time I crossed the border into Scotland I felt less and less comfortable. Each time the people were less friendly, and the last couple of times I've been uncomfortable speaking openly with my English accent. The locals make it very clear I'm not welcome and I feel a great sadness in that. I would go as far as to say I no longer feel safe going to Scotland; last time I went (just before COVID) I took my Canadian partner to the Isle of Skye for a week - the relief I felt even seeing the border as we drove back home down the A1 was like a wave of fresh air. Even my partner could see the hostility toward me during our trip and we've both agreed never to holiday there again. Even worse is the attitude of young Scots here in England; I was recently 'dropped' by a Scottish friend. Although she lives in England, I quietly listened for several years as she regularly attacked the English (we are the worst people on the planet according to her) which I tactfully ignored until it became too much and I decided to defend my country; I told her that her hate was offensive and asked why she lived here if it was so awful. She flew into a rage and now we don't speak. Things have changed in Scotland, and attitudes have hardened. I think there is real hate up there, worse even than Ireland. Now I'm hoping Scotland votes itself independent; they can join the EU and be a totally separate entity. I don't think I'll be going there again which is a shame. My grandmother was born in Glasgow and I have great affection for that city. Such a pity.

The SNP is looking increasingly like fascists. Indeed, they were founded on fascist principles in 1934. And if you are stupid enough to think fascism is solely for right-wingers, I will point out that ‘Nazi’ stood for ‘Nationalist *Socialist*’, which perfectly describes the Scottish Nationalist Party. They obviously aren’t as extreme as Nazis and there’s hardly going to be a Kristallnacht of English businesses, but clearly English people and English sympathisers are the Üntermench of the situation and many in Scotland hate the English with a passion. This is a real concern and it is undeniable bigotry, a problem that will only get worse in my opinion, especially as woke leftists try to equate the very notion of Britain itself with racist oppression.

The Anglophobia has been going on longer than the time of the SNP. I am married to a Scottish Lady, 42 years so far. On many visits to family in Scotland I have been on the wrong end of abuse or discrimination because I am English. I remember going to a fish & chip shop near to my Wife's uncle's house, and his son told me " John, whatever you do, don't speak to me or anyone else down this street, if they hear your accent we're in big trouble".

No it isn't banter it is outright hatred and in today's climate it should be called out for what it is and always has been. Pure unadulterated hatred of the English. But then it is the same in Wales and NI. Yet it doesn't work the other way. Would there be the same number of Irish celebrating St George's day as there are English celebrating St Patrick's day ? I think not.

I think there are nuances to this. For example, a plummy SE accent is somehow more offensive to the ears of a Scot than a rough Geordie one. There's a 'Londonphobia' at play within England too. During the war sailors from London and Liverpool would be at each others' throats more often than not. Take the silly 1960s word 'phobia' out of it and we are at heart a nation of tribes, with tribal loyalties and hard-wired prejudices.

The more people like Neil Oliver speak about so called anti English feeling the more it incites it. Tony Blair spouted the same words during the independence vote. I’m a Scot living in England, I had six English friends at my house for the Scotland vs England rugby match which Scotland won. All my friends were a bit miserable after Scotland won and there was some banter but that aside it was just another enjoyable party. It’s Westminster that is the problem not England, If Neil Oliver wants to help with good relationships between Scotland and England then stop talking promoting anti English rhetoric.

Cant understand the animosity towards the English up north. The feeling can sometimes be mutual but we see each other as the same when it comes down to it. And the English have never claimed to be perfect. But we have so much more in common than the Scots have with anyone in the eurozone. The EU just use the other countries in the United Kingdom against us. But at least when the UK make decisions we make them together. No matter how we disagree we could be so strong as a nation going forward as long as we stick together.
