Absolutely. When he participated in the Burnin' for Buddy tribute, Neil found himself out of his element, and realized he still had a lot to learn. Steve Smith recommended Freddie Gruber, and it was back to the drawing board for him. Sometimes you need a kick in the arse to keep from getting complacent. I recently did some online lessons from Dave Weckl to "sharpen my instrument" (after having played drums for 40 years) and am so glad I did. Weckl actually studied with Gruber himself, and taught some of his methods in his course.

I saw Rush during the Roll the Bones tour. At that time, Neil's drum set was half standard drums and half electronic drums. The electronic drums were tied to the laser light show. When he did his drum solo and started playing the electronic drums the light show went with it. It was the most incredible thing to see and hear - sensory overload. He is definitely missed!

All that.....in the middle of a 3 hr show. And pay attention to the jazz ending, where he pays tribute to some of the legends of drumming....Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. They were a big influence on Neil, and you can hear a lot of jazz influences in Rush too. As always, RIP to "The Professor".

Neil Peart, the sound and face of excellence. There aren't enough words to describe this guy. He was as rounded an individual as anybody could ask. Well read, inquisitive mind coupled with his humility and grace. In spite of the tragedy and loss he endured he remained standing and still able to let the music flow. His interviews on various tv shows over the years allowed fans a small window into this great man. I'm sure I'm not the only one who still has a hard time watching him play without feeling his loss. I knew once you were nearing the xylophone stage in the solo where you were going to go from there. Neil solos progress over the years and they never disappoint. I'm from the Detroit area and Toronto was just across the river, many Rush concerts and uncounted hours spent listening to their whole catalog which is quite large, does something to you, as you are finding. Their whole musical journey is literally right up there with the pyramids and Stonehenge. You should really go after “Closer to the Heart” and “Losing It” if you haven't already. You'll be changed forever if you haven't already been by now.

I saw Rush live back in the days of the Hemispheres tour...it was General Admission Arena seating with seats around the outside and an open floor... I walked around through most of the show getting different angles and perspectives but then ended up on the floor about 10 ft from the stage for the finale...2112... part of that was a drum solo. During the solo Neil threw a drumstick in the air but then missed it when it came down, then proceeded to finish his solo and the rest of the set. I was stunned by how good they were to see live. I was so blown away that I just stood there for about 20 minutes enjoying the ambience of the moment while everyone else was leaving. The drum Tech came out and picked up the Fallen drumstick threw it right to me. I didn't even move and it me right in the chest lol I quickly picked it up and stuck it in my pocket and kept it for probably 20 years. My youngest son started playing the drums so I gave it to him as far as I know he still has it ❤ Rip Neil😢

He's your favorite drummers, favorite drummer ... he is the GOAT .. period. There's Buddy Rich, and then there's Neil Peart. Neil was Buddy on yet another level. Both men, in my view, absolutely defined percussion instrumental play. Neil brought it all to a whole other level. You need to watch Neil playing a tribute to Buddy Rich. It is simply mind blowing. I am so fortunate in my life to have been blessed with growing up and living through the era of RUSH. They have been a major part of my entire life, and they have no idea how much they have enriched my life. I can't even imagine having lived without them. They got me through a whole lot of very rough times. I have also been blessed to have been able to experience them live 18 times. I have been blessed to have been able to experience Alex, Geddy masterful play and Neil's fantastic percussion solo play several times. Priceless! RIP Neil Peart, we miss you!!!

Nice to see you got to this one. There's a reason so many of us think of him as the GOAT. He was truly brilliant, too. In addition to being a Hall of Fame Drummer, he was also a world class lyricist and bestselling author. If you want to get to know him, pick up his book "Ghost Rider." He wrote it while fighting to recover from the loss of his daughter (car accident) and his wife (cancer) in 1997-98. Really courageous man. Huge, Huge loss!! He left a giant hole in the world when he passed. Don't worry about getting blocked with Rush. They don't do copyright complaints. They've said as much in past interviews. Just another one of the things that puts Rush in a class unto themselves. I know I already gave you my list, so have a ball. ☺

The true beauty of his playing, beyond his technique, and his solos being full-blown compositions in and of themselves; was his utter lack of complacency. No matter how many accolades he received in his life, he was always looking to learn more and expand upon his skill set. So much so that 20 years into being the greatest rock drummer even at that time, he decided to seek out a teacher who completely broke down his playing style and rebuilt it to an even better, and stronger. Whereas most anyone else would've likely just assumed that they'd arrived and could coast from there. Neil never did, well except perhaps when he decided to retire from playing, to focus on his family. R.I.P. Professor, and thank you for all the amazing songs/memories.

I live in Las Vegas and we have Freemont Street here (a huge light and sound canopy over a casino lined street basically) and they have paid tribute with some really cool light and sound shows to a few stars after they died...Prince, David Bowie, Eddie Van Halen and Michael Jackson to name a few....only 1 drummer....Neil....those are some pretty big names to be up there with....but in my eyes no one was bigger than Neil....my biggest "loss" in the rock/music world....saw them 11 glorious times live....I took a couple friends to concerts who were somewhat reluctant to go and didnt like Rush....that changed after the concert ended .....every one of the shows was a jaw dropper.... so cool to watch you getting into Rush and Neil, like many of my friends did years/decades ago....

The section of the solo beginning at 5:50 slowly veers off the rails musically because it's a demonstration of a true polyrhythm. Playing two completely different tempos at the same time. It sounds a bit weird if you don't understand what he's doing, but drum teachers recognize it and get their minds blown at how effortlessly Neil pulls it off.

It’s fascinating how music restructures our brains to enhance our perceptions and open the door to a bigger platform of understanding. Rush used to put out a live album every couple of years and each live album had a drum solo. Since the first one, Neil has carried over parts of the solo to the next one. This solo had parts of all the solos before. The professor teaching on multiple levels even after he’s gone. I like your videos. ✌️😉💕

Seen them in concert over a dozen times in my life and every time I watched "the professor" it was like the world stopped and it was just him. Truly in a class of his own - "your favourite drummer's favourite drummer." One of my personal favourite Rush songs is "The Pass", from the album "Presto". I've worked with hundreds of youth over the past forty years, and unfortunately a few of them had taken their own lives for reasons only they could understand, so this song always tugs at me when I hear it. The self-titled song from that album is great too. Also, check out one of Rush's last songs - "The Garden" to see them at the culmination of their 40-year career, and a bit of a tribute to their fans and to themselves - especially Neil.

And my 1st favorite drummer is the same as Neal Peart's favorite drummer, who happens to be the great jazz drummer Buddy Rich. Since you like drumming, you should also watch Buddy Rich. His one video called "Impossible drum solo" is very good. And another up and coming great drummer is El Estepario Siberiano. He even does some crazy one handed drumming, which is incredible. Yet another hearty Rushoholic greeting from San Diego! Did you catch the electronics drop outs from 1:44 to 2:00? Neil's solo starts with the back kit. Between those time marks watch his left hand hits which are accurate, but many of the sounds weren't triggered. The gong he triggered from the marimba sample pad to finish was triggered using a drumstick. Before the KAT MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) marimba, he used actual gongs which had to be struck with a padded mallet. The front kit was working fine, as usual. Props to Neil's drum techs through the years. Neil and the kits sat on a riser which, as you've now seen, turns halfway around so the audience faces Neil regardless of which kit he played. The riser would make one or two more half turns during a typical Rush concert. Neil's closeted nature as a jazz drummer shines through during the last section with the backline video. His reach wasn't known to be an accuracy issue and you didn't see it get in the way of his "blurry" cross sticking. Incidentally, he stood a tall six foot four. Two of the three foot pedals on the front kit were for the kick bass drum and yielded the machine gun like "triplets" heard cutting in and out on the cowbells. Neil claimed to not be talented, but relentless. A fundamental to build upon for such a right handed player is alternate left hand snare hits with right pedal bass kicks. It becomes perfect rhythm with the feet. Or put another way, drumming starts with being able to move the upper and lower parts of the body independently. Because this was filmed before a German audience, the official Rush song title is Der Trommeler (The Drummer). As for suggestions, try the instrumental La Villa Strangiato filmed for Canadian TV in 1978 after they returned from Wales where they recorded the studio version. Whenever you start through all seven parts of 2112, I recommend the studio audio ftom 1976 coupled with the fan generated story board (comic strip) from later years for the lyrics. Please, see to it Dave as well as you stays cool and stays classy... 🥁

I know you’ll like the Nightwish and Dimash and other mainstream stuff but I’m really hoping you do Unleash the Archers - Awakening. They are also a progressive Canadian band.
