Note that in this version, Neil might need a maid, like a child needs a mother, but then he adds on "afraid... a man feels afraid" ! This is not what he normal sings and are not in the lyrics to the song. But the maid is not some worker for him, but a women who can help him go through the hard parts of life. For he wants to know when he might see her again. This is NOT a SEXIST song (as some might suspect), as we hear it in this version, but a call from the weakness of the man's experience in life, to a women who can help to make him whole. At least that is my interpretation, for Neil never belittles women in general. Unless they jilt him... see the album "Cortez the Killer", where Neil sings about breakups with women. I'm sticking with this line of thought!

One of my favourite parts of this performance is how absolutely nobody bats an eye when Heart of Gold comes on. No whoops or hollers. Because this was way before Heart of Gold became a big hit, and people were listening to the lyrics for what they actually meant

There is a video of Diana Krall singing this song and she sang "afraid" instead of maid at the beginning and I was furious that she took it upon herself to change the lyrics to a Neal Young song, but I guess she was covering this live version, I don't know why he changed it though.
@PaulaBoggsBand

@ Neil Young originally wrote “afraid.” I think the record company forced him to change the lyrics. I was so happy to find him performing song for first time in Canada.

There is so much of myself in this song it hurts in the most beautiful way. I went looking for a maid once, that was five years ago. I fell in love against my will but Jesus; I wouldn't change it for the world. It still scares me though - love - but I do it anyway.

On February 23, 1971, barely a month after this Massey Hall performance, Neil played "Heart of Gold" for a BBC TV audience _separately_ on guitar/harmonica, i.e. with the altered instrumentation that later would help make the finished track a #1 hit when finally released in 1972. Did this radical change in form and sound evolve during the intervening few weeks between these two shows? Presumably so ...

I remember being 13 or 14 in the early 70's & babysitting for my sister's child. Her & her husband were about 12 years older than me & my brother in law was big into his music. He had a few LP's laying around that I used to play. One was Elton John's wonderful album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" & the other "Harvest Moon." With the innocence of youth I'd listen to those with maybe some early Bowie thrown in & think - "So this is Rock music right?" I honestly thought these two masterful albums were just two examples of the genre, that EVERYTHING else was going to as close if not as good!
