This is Neil Young's protest against the George H.W. Bush administration; a defiant statement against perceived injustices and a call to action for positive change. Neil can really rock out when he wants to. Put Neil and PJ together, magic. Your take is right on.

There are a couple of different stories about the origin of the title. There is a Neil Young biography out there called 'Shakey' and in it the story is that Neil Young and Crazy Horse were flying to the Middle East to do a show. While they were in the air, and announcement came over the intercom that they had to turn around because war had broken out (first Gulf War), so one of the band (maybe Pancho) muttered under his breath 'I guess we just need to rock in the free world' and Neil liked it and wrote the song .

Neil is one of the all time greats. He's up there with Hendrix, Dylan and Bowie, and Lou Reed. He's a master of the guitar and the harmonica and his song writing is top tier.

Neil Young helped PJ when they were starting out. They actually toured together. He advised them not to say "yes" to everything. I think he was instrumental in how PJ survived this long; he helped them survive fame.

Neil explores genres indeed! One of the great folk artists and song writers of the early seventies (Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, incredible solo albums), had a whole other 70's hard rock side with Neil Young and Crazy Horse, then is considered the Godfather of Grunge with this album and Ragged Glory in the 80's. Pearl Jam worshipped him, toured with him, even did an album with him (Mirrorball). And once when Eddie got hurt, Neil toured with Pearl Jam as their frontman. He also grew up near and came up on the music scene with Joni Mitchell in Canada.

If you want to hear another really heavy song from Neil, try "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)." Neil could do some of the greatest slow songs, but at the same time he could melt your face with other songs. And, he did everything in between. Two songs that I think you need to hear are "Cortez the Killer" and "Powderfinger."

Neil has done solo acoustic albums like the classics "After the Gold Rush" & "Harvest", as well as heavy duty rockers with Crazy Horse, etc. He has about 45 studio albums, so plenty to dip into! I heard he sold 50% of the rights to his music in 2021 for an estimated $150Million. He's currently married to actress Daryl Hannah since 2018.

Neil Young is always having the duality of acoustic country/folk and grungy electric guitar with heavy distortion, right from the beginning of his career. If you dive into his very deep catalogue you will discover he belongs to the type of musician that begins in a very high standard, then not really evolving like The Beatles and Dylan, just carry on to explore the paths he laid out early in his career. The other musician of this type is Richard Thompson.

That second verse, the first sung by Eddie Vedder, hits so hard. Every time I hear it I get a slightly different mental image, but always equally chilling. “Now she puts the kid away and she's gone to get a hit / She hates her life, and what she's done to it / There's one more kid that will never go to school / Never get to fall in love, never get to be cool”

Another KILLER live version of "Rockin...." was performed live on Saturday Night Live in 1989 when the album came out. Neil backed by Charlie Drayton on bass and Steve Jordan on drums (Keith Richards backing band Expensive Winos). Raw, intense also in a punkish way. Well worth reacting to also.

Neil, The Godfather of Grunge. Neil was grunge long before the 90s Grunge era. Neil wrote this song in 1989, on his Freedom record album. There is an all acoustic version and then the heavier electric version which bookend the album. It was a huge hit. I believe this is the first time Neil worked with Pearl Jam (this was the 93 MTV music awards). Eddie Vedder idolized Neil, and they played at each other's live concerts many times, did a whole album together and Neil toured with Pearl Jam as his backing band in 1995 (Mirror Ball).

You may find this hard to believe, but there are a lot of dumb people out there who don't respect Neil's guitar playing, they call it simplistic and stupid. These people tend to worship showboats like Eddie Van Halen and other shredders. What they can't grasp is that Neil has a unique and distinctive style, a rarity in rock music. I can tell a Neil solo in just a few notes, he's that special.

One of the loudest, rawest feedback drenched, distorted, heavy concerts I ever experienced. Neil said he was channeling his anger and rage through his guitar after watching the CNN coverage of the War every night in his hotel room.

I usually associate the “rock” in the title with crack rock. Since the line in the verse about getting a “hit.” The colors on the street refer to the street gangs who sold the crave. The “bloods” and the “crips” so wore red and blue clothing, respectively. As far as the “free word” goes, I think that came out of the Cold War. Especially after China went communist. There was the free world, and the communist world. Belgium was in the free world. And although nobody in Europe considered it so, folks in the US started calling the president the Leader of the Free World. Some shameless self aggrandizing. Fairly typical.
