This is such a complex song, three songs in one. Each bring out different feelings. The harmonies of him with Stephen Stills are incredible, best song on the album, but what an album. Helpless another classic. Still remember the brown textured cover with the old time photos!

Stills making that high pitched scream “will she join you there“ right before country girl starts. Excellent harmony. Gives me the chills every time.

One the best songs he ever wrote, and there where so many great ones. A beautiful, harmonic, tune with an unmatched level of intensity to close it out.

"too late to keep the change." is the genius of the song. If life changes wait too long, and then it's too late to do anything with them. The waitress thing is a simple metaphor. It's not change from a dollar at a food counter..

Winding paths through tables and glass First fall was new Now watch the summer pass So close to you. Too late to keep the change, Too late to pay, No time to stay the same Too young to leave. No pass out sign on the door set me thinking Are waitresses paying the price of their winking? While stars sit in bars and decide what their drinking, They drop by to die 'cause it's faster than sinking. Too late to keep the change, Too late to pay, No time to stay the same Too late to keep the change, Too late to pay, No time to stay the same Too young to leave. Find out that now was the answer To answers that you gave later She did the things that we both did before, now, But who forgave her. If I could stand to see her crying I would tell her not to care. When she learns of all your lyin' Will she join you there? Country girl I think you're pretty, Got to make you understand, Have no lovers in the city, Let me be your country man. Got to make you understand.

This was the best song on CSNY and the best example of their vocal harmony talent. Too bad there weren't more like this instead of twaddle like Our House and Teach Your Children. Neil seemed to be able to knock out great tunes at will in the late 60's and early 70s.
@Revolution11173 жыл бұрын
Wholeheartedly agree re: CSN&Y, and the writing brilliance of Neil from towards the end of his time with Buffalo Springfield up through "Harvest". Sure, some could say that "Harvest" was over-commercialized because of "Old Man" / "Heart of Gold", but it truly is a great album throughout, particularly the electric songs with The Stray Gators.
@scifiwriter983 жыл бұрын
@@Revolution1117 I agree. My favorite songs from Harvest were Words and A Man Needs A Maid. They were the last of the more complex Neil Young songs like Broken Arrow and Country Girl before he entered his stripped down phase of three chord songs. I especially missed the beautiful guitar tones that he abandoned. There were a few more here and there like Pushed It over the End and Last Dance, but his best songs were behind him in my opinion.
