I flew out of nashville once, prob the most hung over I’ve ever been. Didn’t exactly notice much around me but walked to the back of the plane sat down beside the guy beside me didn’t really look at him. But as we were getting settled I noticed people kept looking back at me. I just kept thinkin damn I’m way worse off than I thought! Having been out drinking till 4 and currently sitting on an 8am flight. Eventually I did the look over to see who I’m sitting beside and it just so happened to be Marty Stuart!!! I sat still for about 15 min before I collected myself enough to say somthing. Finally struck up a chat with him about music and gear and a head appears through the seats behind us and it’s Kenny! Best flight of my life. We all chatted the whole flight and up the ramp when when we landed in Toronto. They left to head west and I went home to Halifax. He signed my lyric book and it’s still a prize possession of mine.

I saw Neil in 1971 at Massey Hall in downtown Toronto. Just Neil with an acoustic guitar and a piano. He moved effortlessly back and forth from one instrument to the other depending on what he felt like playing. It was like having him at home in your living room chatting and banging around on his guitar...Thanks Kenny...

Best quote I've ever read "There is nothing lost between what Neil Young feels, what he plays, and what the audience perceives." When I saw Miles Davis with Mike Stern, Mike played a chord that just wasn't right. Everybody knew it, he knew it, by the look on his face and him sheepishly looking over to Miles. Who waited an instant, smiled and blew one note that resolved that harshness. The look of amazement on Mike Stern's face was a moment I'm glad I caught.

“One of my favourite solos is in Cinnamon Girl by Neil Young. It’s a one-note solo and it just fits the song. Anyone else would have gone woraaagh and it wouldn’t have made any sense. If I’ve changed over the years, it’s that I’ve got more in tune with the song." ... Eddie Van Halen
@humanbeing2420
@humanbeing2420 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, Cinnamon Girl doesn't have a one-note solo - I think Eddie was confusing that song with Down By the River, which does. Still, point well made and taken.
@humanbeing2420
@humanbeing2420 2 жыл бұрын
@@chiefline7084 You're right - I stand corrected. I just listened to the original studio version and indeed that is a one note solo. I'm used to the version from Live Rust, which I listened to a billion times as a kid - that solo is either a bit more varied or it's buried in the mix so it's hard to distinguish it from the rhythm part. Upon reflection, maybe EVH is low on the list of people one should question on guitar-related matters...

Yep, one note. A fun song to play on guitar, too.
@davidmckean955
@davidmckean955 Жыл бұрын
The crazy thing about Cinnamon Girl is that the version that charted and got all the airplay was the mono 45 version and it has the vocal parts swapped between Neil and Danny. You can also hear in that version that it's probably not completely a one note solo but the B string overtakes all and that's how it comes across.

Love ya Otis , Neil Young is my fav. After the gold rush and tonight's the night are both Haunting and perfect album`s to me . The emotions on both of these are unreal . Love all his country style music and think he should be in the country hall of fame , along with Gordon Lightfoot in my opinion. I seem to gravitate towards song writers from Canada for some reason , they have a sound and soul that is different. GORDON LIGHTFOOT IS UP IN MY BOOK IS ONE OF THE GREATEST HAUNTING SONG WRITERS. OTIS YOU ARE A GREAT INTERVIEWER AND LOVE THE FOLKS YOU HAVE AND THE SONG WRITERS YOU TALK ABOUT ARE MY FAVORITES.........YOU ARE A GOOD AND REAL , IN THS TIME OF HATE........HOLD FAST MY FRIEND AND CARRY ON....

Tonight’s the night is my all time Neil fav, too! In 1976 a friend graphically reproduced the cover on the full kitchen wall, floor to ceiling. When the farmer needed his rented house back a couple of years later, his wife SCREAMED about the vampire painting! I saw Neil 7 times - 3 with Crazy Horse, 3 with CSN&Y, once with Stills Young Band (also in 1976!) Peace

Fantastic!! I read Shakey too. I'm obsessed with everything Neil Young does too. My favorite or by far most played Neil Young and Crazy Horse Record has to be Raged Glory. The sound and band performances on that record still blows my mind. But Tonight's The Night? Whoa!!!! Same king of vibe. That record was recorded at LA's Studio Instrument Rentals, my employer in a different city (Not LA) for the last 22 or more years. "Bruce Berry was a working man, he used to load that Econoline Van." That record is haunted by the Ghosts of Danny Whitten and Bruce Berry, buth heroin casualties. Bruce Berry's brother Jan was half of Jan and Dean, and his other brother Ken, started, and to this day, still runs Studio Instrument Rentals. Otis, thank you for posting, and Kenny thank you for talking. I could listen all day.

Let me just say that I have the utmost respect for Kenny Vaughan, and Marty and the Superlatives! I remember the one time I was fortunate to see Neil & Crazy Horse Band, It seemed as though Neil was trying to create a spiritual environment for the listeners such that we would have a life changing experience. I know I will never forget that show, and after that experience I became convinced that Neil's gift to the world was through the live performance. The show I saw was in the mid 1980's at an outdoor venue in Manchester, NH.

Just learned this amazing "Neil" trivia from YT comments about the band Love and their seminal psyche tune "Revelation", which is an entire B-Side opus featured on the album "Da Capo"(1967): "Da Capo" was released in January 1967 but was indeed recorded in 1966. A little known story is that while Neil Young was working on his very first record with "The Loner" and "The Old Laughing Lady," he and Jack Nitzsche helped produce this song but were left uncredited for legal reasons". (!!!)

One of the times I saw Neil with Crazy Horse, coincidentally with Lucinda (and Kenny) opening, it was just like Kenny described: 3 hippies with guitars banging it out in front of the bass drum, digging into the groove like deep Earth miners. The last chord of their last song lasted for something like 15 minutes. I'm talking about Neil bending a single note for a quarter of an hour... and that's not really much of an exaggeration. It was one of the most brilliant things I've ever witnessed.
