I'm an old guy. I remember the days in the 70's with a Technics Turntable. a high quality Pioneer amp and massive JBL L300 speakers playing Fleetwood Mac Rumours. Then came Donald Fagen's the Nightfly, yeah it was digital but it sounded great. People would sit around and listen to music as a thing. Now we listen to music mainly in our cars. I have an iPhone with 5000 songs at 320kps MP3s. Apple Car Play sounds OK, but not like my old stereo.

First I want to say thank you to Neil Young for getting the word out that sound quality matters. I'm also glad he feels analog is still the king and that digital has its limits even at the highest sample rate. My only question which I still have not been able to get answered is there is no mention what the native format is the music your purchasing was recorded in and what sample rate its was transferred to. I certainly don't want to be buying upsampled 44.1 16 bit files I can do that myself, I want to know I am buying true high resolution native format files. The higher resolution files can make a HUGE difference in sound if the original recording is good, and the mastering engineer did a good job converting it.

However, Pono music is STILL only available to people who live in the USA via the store he talks about. Which is a real hassle for all the global citizens with a Pono in their hands. Its a record company thing, but boy does it suck.

Yeah this worked out well. Instead of using all the time and energy on this, he should've focused on speaking out against all the autotuned corporate-driven pop that's dominating the music industry. Maybe this would've sparked a backlash and a new music revolution would've started.

7:44 Neil seems to forget (or doesn't know) that his Harvest DVD-Audio is 192kHz in Stereo so the DVD-A format was capable of Pono quality.

Moving on.... , seriously though, I love my dvd-a and sacd, but dvd is dead and sacd is stagnant, and blu-audio doesn't seem to be gaining much steam. I like that he keeps pushing forward for us.

Cerastes it's not bull shit. Most consumers don't understand digital how it works and that there are sound differences from recording to playback and that every aspect of that effects sound quality. Digital is not just digital and doesn't mean your getting all the information if it's digital. Sampling rate does effect the quality of sound, sure bandwidth and digital brick wall filters do effect sound quality but there is much more than that. My job is to make the average consumer or for that matter anyone who enjoys music understand that if its digital doesn't mean your getting the best sound from it.

Hmmm, even now on Pono Music store there are not many albums in hi-res. Even Neil Young is mostly 44.1, I hope he will release all 192/24 albums. Are the many 44.1 albums there now the highest the artists have released to Pono? The second battle is getting the artists to record hi-res as a standard if they are not already.

A LP holds about 20 min. of music per side. The attention span of an adult is 20 minutes. Then one turns it over then on is ready to her the next 20 min. The record is 12 inches wide. Many deep important things in life, have a 12 to 20 relationship.

Aaaaahhh....the days when it was all about the quality of the song-writing...guess the following song won't make it onto Pono then Neil...big- boy labels only. Recently a £50 recording of a song seemed to jerk a former top music critic back out into critiquing the following song with this opinion. THE CHILD by URBAN SEASCAPE. " Nice arrangement. Cool acoustic guitar, intro and groove. Voice is not flashy but very sincere. It got nice and interesting at 1.29 when the female vocal floated with more muscle under the lead singer with nice haunting support. Good thud-like drum and this lead singer had a good understanding of what words were important to emphasise. Played with pronunciation cleverly. Struck an effective balance with soft and louder passages. Drama built perfectly.." a child, that once was me"...COMPELLING.This is a winner. Wish you luck with this. Far, far better than the fluff that is offered by radio and commercial music hawkers. CHALK THIS ONE UP TO THE WIN COLUMN SONIC FOXX MUSIC" You decide Joe Public.

Very few people have the money to get yet another portable player. Why can't digital MP3 music be released at a higher data range? Of course it is being but not yet as high as it could be. Good on Neil though as a spin off of this player apple will have to compete and put the quality up

If Hi-Res Pono is like vinyl, that it must be crap. It's clear: If you sell a bottle of 5€ wine for 100€ than people will "feel" the quality of the high-priced wine.

He's got a point about the fact that high-res audio files should be more available, however WHAT THE HELL, OH MY GOD, so much shit around that...he's obviously trying to sell his product, but oh lord is he talking shit... Your shitty record player, amp and speaker you described somehow is still better than a lower bitrate, lower sample, slightly muddy in the highs, MP3??? There is no objective OR sensible subjective way in which that can be argued...just my 2 cents

The entire Audio industry and their dynamic "loudness" wars ruined the audio "listening" industry, and they didn't even care. These Gold-coin-counting nymph's, and ogre's, and gnome's, only cared about their almighty $dollar profits. Same goes for iTunes, they either change and offer HQ-Audio (flac...), or become part of the elevator "musak" world. ALL musicain's simply wanted their (digitized-Master-Taped) Music to be "accurately" reproduced, and listenable for all the world. Blu-ray Audio, if simply boxed properly, with the exact same manufacturing costs as the old audio CD, had the capability to right all these wrong, and more. If nothing else, Blu-ray+, with it's massive amount of archival storage abilities could be used for that now. But NOOO, once again, the cheapness of mis-managed greed, and to save nothing, had to rear it's ugly head again. !? I hope the entire "Audio-CD" intrutry dies a very quick death -as it most righteously deserves now, and instead of wasting anymore money on that -put it back into QUALITY Audio-Engineering, and Mixing,..., where it belonged in the first place, and ba-bye to these Audio-CD-beer-coaster makers forever.

Anyone interested in a more nuanced take on Digital Audio would do very well to watch Monty Montgomery's excellent video, 'Digital Show And Tell' at www.xiph.org/video/vid2, and read his accompanying article, '24/192 Music Downloads ...and why they make no sense' at xiph.org/~xiphmont/demo/neil-young.html. The video and the article are crystal-clear and grounded in real, actual, observable science. God Bless Neil Young!

I love Neil and I think Pono is a great move towards pushing higher end audio formats but he should use a different spokesman. I think I know what he's trying to get at but when arguing points especially comparing vinyl to Pono he looses his ground and contradicts himself a lot. He's just not a good salesman.
