Wow this is amazing! My grandmother played this on her piano every morning..rain, hail or shine. I had no idea of the meaning behind this song, but I did know she sang it for my Grandfather and all the boys that didnt come home. Also, credit should be given to Mr Matariki Smith of Nuhaka as the original composer. #MaoriBattalion

Only just spotted this.. Thank you Neil for rescuing what I see as part of the New Zealand musical story. While it might have been ideal to haul Jim up to to Roundhead and sit him in front of some amazing vintage mic that suits the era, that is not important in this context. Your guys effort has shared a lost story that I did not no of till now, and there is got to be a song in that alone that echos in our Kiwi halls of fame .

Thanks Neil Finn, I will have to show my 88 year old mum because she was an Aucklander and a young woman when her big brother went off to WW2. I am sure she would know that song too, just Gorgeous.

The original writer of Blue Smoke was actually Matariki (Riki) Smith of Nuhaka. He wrote that song while in the army overseas and taught it to his regiment, which obviously became a hit. He just didn't register it on return to NZ.@Neil Finn, this song was written to express his yearning for his hometown of Nuhaka.

Neil what a great clip and fantastic exchange with Jim. The song, the images of those troopships, bought a tear to the eye. We continue to owe so much to those guys.

Ruru Karaitiana did NOT write this song. He stole it from my Papa - Captain Riki Smith of the 28th Maori Battalion.
@MiddleOfMiddleEarth
@MiddleOfMiddleEarth 9 жыл бұрын
Mahina Smith Kia Ora Mahina, according to my brief search, Ruru Karaitiana, did acknowlledge that someone else had written the lyrics .... "We were on the troopship Aquitania in 1940 off the coast of Africa when a friend drew my attention to some passing smoke. He put the song in my lap," said Karatiana. So, I believe, going by your comments, that friend was your papa Captain Riki Smith. I have acknowledge this on my Facebook page at .... facebook.com/TheHobbit.MiddleOfMiddleEarth
