This is a great video about making a knife! No stupid music, no 3x speed on the hammering, and he knows enough about what he's doing to fill the dead time with useful explanation! I haven't seen the movement of metal explained during forging so intuitively before. I also like the fact it's real, no influencer polished presentation of scripted text, just him talking through the process. Glad I found this video!

Mahalo for the appreciation. These videos take time to do in our busy schedules. We try to keep it as real as possible, informative and Some laughs because this is how we actually are in the shop. Stay tuned. We are working on more episodes and trying to find a flow for content. Much Mahalos!

I’ve wanted to be a blacksmith for a long time. Never done it cause money but honestly you kinda eased my worries a bit. You made a awesome lookin knife with a hammer, anvil and a forge for the most part. Imma save up and give it a shot. Your def the best blacksmith channel I have found and I watch a lot of blacksmith videos 😂

He definitely has an awesome channel. But he’s a Bladesmith, not a blacksmith. If your looking for specifically blacksmithing i would have a look at black bear forge as well as a good few others. I started blacksmithing a few years ago and yea you really just need a hammer, anvil and forge to start out. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Well that was two months ago when realized I loved the idea of being a blacksmith. I did change my mind on blacksmithing as a whole and focus on becoming a bladesmith. I now own a anvil, angle grinder, forge, and vice. Got it all for as cheap as could while still getting quality stuff. Tried my hand at making my first knife recently and gotta say I respect Mastersmiths so much more. It is hard! But I love it. Def a workout. It’s satisfying to see my creation slowly take form. I also have now realized how easy it is to get upset over a small blemish. Seriously it’s pure rage 😅. Love this and I won’t stop tell tell imma master bladesmith!

Thank you for this!! I’ve never forged a chef’s knife, but I will be trying one soon for a friend, so this was extremely informative (and entertaining). I love how you described the angles of the hammer-blows for each step. SO helpful.

Neil is so fascinating to watch especially when he straightens out the piece. I really enjoyed the mic placement. It made him sound like a powerhammer which cracked me up and what made it better is he was moving that steel like hes a powerhammer. Conclusion... Neil is a powerhammer

I enjoyed every minute of this video. Record as many as you possibly can. I hope you understand how much your work inspires us amateur blacksmiths. Today is exactly 1 year since I made my first knife in my backyard with cinder blocks, grill charcoal, my wifes hair dryer, and a log as my anvil. Please continue to make content for the smiths that are hungry for the foundational tips. Going over your hammers and their uses, how to swing a hammer correctly, and the importance of reducing the grain structure and why/how the process works were priceless little pieces of information. I can't wait for the grinding and sharpening videos. Thank you for your passion. I can't wait to own one of your blades one day. Truly art ♥️

This has been one of the most helpful videos I have ever watched on forging. I didn't really understand how to get a good profile, but you explained it well. Drawing it on paper and explaining the back and forth between hitting the cutting edge and spine was invaluable to me. I think a lot of other smiths don't take the time to explain like you have. Thank you Neil... Much appreciated!

I honestly enjoyed every minute of this video. I'm glad to see the actual forging process using the hammer instead of the press. Most videos I've been seeing, the Smith will trace the design on a piece of metal and use the machine to do the rest. To me, that's not forging. You got a new subscriber 👍

Have fun, and make a knife! Geoff Feder mentioned something on one of the podcasts about dancing from one grinder to the next. So, I threw on a Grateful Dead show while shaping and finishing the handles of three knives, and got groovy going from one to the other. Caught myself smiling a lot during the process 😀
