Oh Alabama The devil fools with the best laid plan. Swing low Alabama You got spare change You got to feel strange And now the moment is all that it meant. Alabama, you got the weight on your shoulders That's breaking your back. Your Cadillac has got a wheel in the ditch And a wheel on the track Oh Alabama Banjos playing through the broken glass Windows down in Alabama. See the old folks tied in white ropes Hear the banjo. Don't it take you down home? Alabama, you got the weight on your shoulders That's breaking your back. Your Cadillac has got a wheel in the ditch And a wheel on the track Oh Alabama. Can I see you and shake your hand. Make friends down in Alabama. I'm from a new land I come to you and see all this ruin What are you doing Alabama? You got the rest of the union to help you along What's going wrong?

Two sad things about this incredible song: one, many people think "Southern Man" inspired the reprehensible Lynard Skynard song and, two, there is no justice that their song is a million times more well known than this Neil Young gem. And Neil's message is spot on unlike those other fools.

@@grumpy9478 Indeed, and from what I understand, after Sweet Home Alabama was released, the guys from Skynyrd stated that they had no grudge or bone to pick with Neil Young at all. They simply wanted to give a sort of casual counterpoint to his song. And Neil himself has said multiple times he has no problems or grievances whatsoever with Skynyrd or their music either. That’s how I’m able to enjoy both of their Alabama songs.

A few weeks after the tragic plane crash in 1977, Neil Young performed at a children’s hospital benefit in Miami, Florida. He chose to play a snippet of Sweet Home Alabama and his song Alabama as a tribute to his friend Ronnie Van Zant. Incidentally, this was the last time Young performed his tune Alabama. As discussed above, he realized the negative impact the lyrics had on the people of the South.
