Where’s the underlying pathos, that electrifies every word sung by Callas? A ‘beautiful voice’ some say -yes. But we are not singing ‘Panis Angelicus’ here. A voice must act along with the characterisation, the sound must convey the inner turmoil, the grief, the loss, the fatality of a situation, the drama….it’s back to the question: what is Opera singing? It’s about creating a character and making that character believable to the audience. I would love Tibaldi singing religious arias, all ethereal beauty, divine gentleness. Callas was the Violeta of the century.

Tempo lentissimo, non giusto per questa stupenda aria. Qui Renata sembra solo compiacersi della sua stupenda risonanza, ma non pare molto Interessata al personaggio e al dramma, peccato perché di solito era più espressiva, il pubblico quella sera, a giudicare dalle ovazioni finali, deve averla distratta dal veicolare il messaggio autentico del dramma
