I would like to give an update on Nene.
For the past two weeks, Nene has been kept alone in the indoor exhibit room in order to avoid herd problems by prioritizing her physical condition.
On Wednesday, September 25, she was moved from the indoor exhibit room to a bedroom (closed area) for her future recovery.
Nene in her bedroom.Although her legs were noticeably weak on the day of the move, we were able to confirm that she was moving around in her bedroom on Thursday, September 26. She was also using all four limbs to move around while floating her body, and on Friday the 27th, we also saw her climbing a ladder, showing that she is gradually regaining muscle strength in all four limbs.
The apes are now working as a team to help Nene recover and to provide mental care for the four apes (Shabani, Ai, Kiyomasa, and Ani).
We will not be able to reopen the indoor viewing area for a while, but we ask for your warm support.

I am glad to hear reports of Nene's recovery, albeit a little bit at a time.
Reporting that I was able to hear a little more about Nene from the keepers in addition to the blog
・Nene is in the basement, able to meet with Shabani and other gorillas albeit over the fence.
※However, the keepers have to clean out the basement, so there is a temporary period of time in the morning when Shabani and other gorillas cannot see Nene
・Nene says she eats at least three times a day while being checked by a veterinarian.

On this day, the keeper finished distributing the vegetables and the door opened, but only Shabani could not be seen for a while
After a while, Shabani came out, ate a few vegetables and minded Nene in the basement
I assume this is because the keepers are cleaning out the basement so they can't see Nene.
About 30 minutes after the breakfast door opened, the keeper had apparently finished cleaning the basement, and Shabani immediately went to the basement and did not come out for some time
Shabani and the other gorillas left about 30% of the vegetables distributed by the keeper in the morning, but all the gorillas ate well the tomatoes, carrots, and eggplants of the keeper who distributed the vegetables at 1 PM.
But only Shabani seemed to care about Nene and moved to the basement in the middle of the day

I think Nene had a stroke about the time she fell from that rope. Her right back leg went limp as well as her right eye lid. It closed completely and she could not open that eye. But the zoo isn’t being open and honest about her medical diagnosis & current medical condition.

Nene is ONE of the best in this Troop! I say that because she gave Shabani a son who will one day be a great silverback. She has a beautiful daughter and granddaughter. She’s a tough old cookie. Glad she’s in her own room so she can continue to heal. Love you Nene! Thank you JZ. 💕🫶🏼🙏🏽

I hope and pray Nene is getting the appropriate medical attention she needs and deserves. I have tried to give this zoo some grace but having watched Nene suffer greatly being bullied and physically hurt by her family before the keepers decided to move her was heartbreaking and quite frankly disappointing Nene needs to be allowed to retire from public view like the Cleveland Zoo did with two of their elderly gorillas. This zoo has made enough money off Nene to give her that gift. Also, I don't understand why their diet seems to only be include vegetables and some bambo occasionally. What about three branches to help keep their teeth strong. This vegetable only diet can't be healthy nor is it what they would eat everyday in the wild.

Momotaro troops hardly gets such vegetables but mostly pastures and grasslands with carrots, cabbage and lettuce reason for Genki tooth decay but both zoos should balance their diet for the gorillas... They are hungry and tailored made food so they eat but both zoos should give varieties...

I am glad they have this arranged this way. I agree with JZ. I think Shabani wouldn't leave NeNe, so he staid below for the first while. It is so sad for all of them, but at least this way, NeNe isn't alone, and the rest do not always wonder where or what is going on with NeNe. Especially Ai who adores her mother. It can not be easy for the zoo to rearrange everything so that some can come out, but NeNe can't, and so on. I was really mad at the zoo at first, but now that it seems to be set up better for all of them. I think they are all stressed but a tiny bit less if they can see NeNe through a fence type thing. That was how they had it when Annie was being raised by the keepers. There was a place where Shabani would put his fingers through to touch her. So she was not alone, but protected as someone said. I was also rethinking my earlier comments on euthanasia when it is needed. I think Japense culture respects their elders where humans are concerned. JZ or anyone from their culture let me know if I am wrong, please. So, I was thinking in their eyes maybe their way of respecting an elderly gorilla is the same. Maybe they believe in caring for NeNe out of respect for elders as a culture. It is possible that their belief if they do the best they can for as long as they can before euthanasia becomes a conversation. I still think it was bad judgment to have left NeNe in as part of the group for as long as they did with no intervention. I still believe that. I also still believe that if NeNe is suffering at any point that she has no quality of life, they should have the sad conversation about dying with dignity. I still have my opinions but for certain things I think I was too hard on them. Because truly since Annie and Kiyo were toddlers and I have been watching the videos, they have taken care of them much better than some zoos than I have seen. So if I was too hard on the keepers, for that I apologise

This is a wonderful update! I'm so glad the troop is getting to interact with Nene with a protective fence. I think this will help her recovery and will also ease the stress on the troop. This makes me feel so good. Shabani and AI have been extremely concerned about Nene, all of them really have - even Annie who harassed her grandma. It's been really touching to watch these videos and witness their concern. I truly hope Nene can get stronger and have more time with her family.

I have to say it I’m sorry but it’s what I seen in the comments 😮😮 We all can say how we don’t like Nene for her being very abusive to Annie when she was a baby, I myself have said I don’t care for the way she miss treated Annie but I still love her because she’s a gorilla 🦍 or an animal they are NOT human and sometimes I forget this I do.. But I would never want to see ANY animal hurt in any way. Nene is the alpha female in this troop and is very much loved from around the world and even Annie loves her grumpy old ladybug grandma ❤❤❤Shabani is going crazy because of Nene not being part of the troop and has no idea how or what to do well all of them. Ai is taking it the worst that’s her mum, Kiyo is not showing much worries for Nene but at the same time he’s not himself these days.. As I can feel the love that they all have for my grumpy old ladybug Nene just from the loss of my mum and dad the knowing.. I have been praying for this wonderful family gorilla troop, 🤞🤞🤞🤞

Why because of human killing them for food and taken their babies to sell for profit. I’m all for zoo’s and I’m all for letting them stay wild in the jungle. But man or we humans ONLY THINK ABOUT OURSELVES taking and taking and taking they don’t really have that much jungle left because of humans. I may have read it wrong but Ai is not Shabani’s offspring AI’s Dad was named Ricky but he passed shortly after Ai was born. We don't see all the types of food they eat, I do it is mostly vegetables, more than the sugar content of fruit because they are vegetarian animals. Someone once mentioned that gorillas somehow make protein in their digestion. I never knew that but it is a cool thing. They way they poop I am sure they have roughage and other things. They love their veggies I wish other zooz feed their gorillas as well.

I've watched live-stream of Kyoto Zoo, where Momotaro troop lives. The zookeeper was doing the stream, when she called Momo by name he came to her. So I guess they understand when they are adressed by name. At least if they interact closely with zookeepers.

They do know their name when people used. When Shabani came along & the female's went crazy yelling out his name, they had to put a sign up saying ( please be quiet) it took Shabani awhile to get used to people screaming. It gave him a sense of self. He knows how hot 🔥 he is 😉

I think she is in a cage in the basement where the gorillas can see her and be close to her. The cage is to protect her should Annie or Kiyomasa charge her. She is vulnerable in her current state and cannot defend herself.

Thanks for the update. Since you are able to converse with the keepers, can you ask them I these quarters have soft hay or something soft for her to lay on? The other places did not. In this time of her life, this should require loads and loads of it, just for her.🤎🦍🩶
