i never thought i would call a gorilla based but that is exactly what shabani is. he knows how to play and horse around with other pack members, but also is not afraid to protect the weaker ones in his pack should the need arise. he's more than just a handsome gorilla that some japanese women developed a crush on. this is the gorilla to surpass all gorillas

I’m am very pleased to hear Nene is getting attention. I think closing down viewing temporarily is warranted and will help calm Nene and the others. I am very happy also to learn Nene is eating. We tend to see these animals as human but they are wild animals. Their focus is purely survival. Food and reproduction is primary driver of their existence. Their behavior sometimes are mistaken for human emotion but they don’t possess the same altruism as we do. What drives their behavior is based on their instinct to survive and reproduce. Thank you Zoo keepers for taking good care of these magnificent animals.

I think Nene needs her own space so she can live out the remainder of her life in peace and be safe from being harassed. Perhaps the members of her family don't mean to be cruel, but she's been injured a few times and it breaks my heart.

Nene may have had a stroke and she has bad arthritis and she has no teeth she may have trouble digesting her food because chewing breaks down the vegetables better and she needs specialized care. Climbing up so high is dangerous for her. She needs food that is easy to digest but the other gorillas will be jealous and pick on her. The zoo has a lot of variables on determining the best outcome for her.

Quality of life is important to animals, if you have pets, you know all too well. If she's suffering, they should do the right thing for her...don't prolong the inevitable. My 2¢

You know, I wondered the same thing about her possibly having trouble digesting her food properly because of no teeth. It can definitely cause problems but I think they were giving her a different diet of softer foods here lately when her appetite started wavering. But, we just don’t know what all is going on with her and I agree about needing specialized care. Because Nene is started acting differently it threw the whole group off so they made the right decision to shut it down for now.

Her interactions with the kids are so cute....She's a grand lady, alpha, been in captivity since 1973, stolen from her homeland with Rikky....if she is gone, and they are giving the rest of the troop time to grieve, so be it. I grew up in San Diego and this is a well established zoo that cares for their animals. One must consider if Japan wants help. Sometimes egos clash and I have to wonder if the gorillas care is of primary concern. The people that make decisions would have to be humble enough to say I need some suggestions. There are approx 20 gorillas in Japan now. And there is only 1 female that is eligible to pair with. I have to wonder why Japan had 10 years to consider the future of some of these young gorillas. Most of them are related. Aww. No forethought. and Inbreeding is out of the question. I look at the facts of their history. One person stated in the wild the weakest link is preyed upon or left behind. But we are not in the wild. We put them in a zoo and it is the zoos responsibility to care for Nene with dignity. Anything is possible if the Will is there and the heart. Good question

@@sylvie2519 awesome zoos in San Diego, been to both many times! I have to concur that many countries won't do business with Japan zoos because of they do not provide the standard of care as the Western zoos do. It's obvious , however, how much the zookeeper in Kyoto loves her job, but she has to answer to the powers that be and follow their rules, immaterial of whether or not she agrees with them. At least they get that kind of compassion attention in that matter. I hope things change for the better for them...but, like you said, egos and "my way or the highway" type attitude it seems. Sad for them, for sure. Keep hoping....

Annie is Nene’s granddaughter via A.I. When Annie was young, Nene gave her a hard time.

Her leg injury probably started as arthritis...and like us as we age, has gotten worse. Same with her arms. The falls she's had have no doubt have made things much worse for her. So some are saying she had a stroke, I think it's from all the falls and hits she's received from her family while trying to to evade (and go after them). It's hard to be the oldest in the troop...she's nearly 53 years old.
