And underworld is about the second iteration of the matrix. The first was a paradise and rejected by humans. The second was a more grounded but whimsical version. In the matrix reloaded there's multiple references to this version of the matrix by the Oracle mentioning ghosts and werewolves. Later we see the French guy has bodyguards that are said to be old programs from an earlier version of the matrix. The ghost like twins and two others who are killed by silver (werewolves) the French guys other bodyguards move and fight like vampires while fighting neo. Now watch underworld with this knowledge, kate beckinsale is that version of the one, but is never unplugged.
