Zainsoft is nuts. I've watched people play some of their games, which are usually broken in weird ways. Mysterious company. The founder, Takahiro Miyamoto, was also described as a "psychopath" in the book, The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers: Volume 2. A quote from one of the Zainsoft employees, Kensuke Takahashi, "One time I kept working for nine days without any sleep. And then Miyamoto-san spotted me dozing off, and he came up behind me and kicked me as hard as he could. The desk and and myself went flying two or three meters, but I was so tired the pain didn't even register. I hit my head against the monitor hard enough to make the screen crack. But the only thing I cared about was whether the computer was working or not."
@eadweard.7 күн бұрын

@@eadweard. You could say that about a lot of things in Japan.
@michaelcalvin426 күн бұрын
@@eadweard. I don't buy it either. In those days, people were using CRT monitors still. The front glass on those is so thick, there's no way a human skull is going to crack it without acquiring a concussion and maybe requiring reconstructive surgery (not to mention the implosion hazard of cracking a CRT). Also the physics of kicking someone so hard their desk is sent 2 or three meters is pretty suspicious to say the least. Could be based on a true story, I suppose, but those are some seriously exaggerated details.
@BasementBrothers5 күн бұрын
Yeah, actually I would agree the details are probably exaggerated. 9 days without sleep sounds excessive. And "hard enough to make the screen crack" must mean that it seemed hard enough, but it didn't actually crack.

The sheer nostalgia factor has a pull to it greater and deeper than any black hole. The Japanese PC gaming scene from this era feels like a whole other beast to me than what I remember as a kid in the States, so it's both nostalgic and also eye-opening. I have a morbid fascination with NEC products and history thanks to the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16, so these videos scratch a certain itch, I guess.

"She" used to have a dedicated Twitter and everything, and was very active on there -- but then the account just vanished, and she hasn't really been heard from again AFAIK. I'll have to stage a nationwide search for her, beginning at my local Famie Mart. ;)

As someone who's probably considered a "Lost Media Hunter" by modern terminology, I'm glad to see a video like this on this channel. I imagine finding a lost Retro Japanese PC game must be an incredibly difficult task. The quirkiness of hearing crisp voice acting over retrogame bleeps and bloops makes me think of my experience digging up videos of archived Satellaview broadcasts. Of course, that's probably a me thing. Going back into a more normal mindset, I wonder if perhaps your way of thinking there was what people may have subconsciously thought about CD-enhanced ports that were frequent on the PC-Engine CD and Mega CD. Also, voice-acting only... this reminds me of a video critic I recall who thought Puyo Puyo CD only using the CDDA for voice acting was "baffling". Well, now I know another game that handles it that way. 21:40 I'm probably reading a bit in-between the lines here, but I think the game is alluding to Zack becoming a head-on-a-wall like his dad, meaning the government is experimenting on him and he may have ended up being a twist boss or antagonist of a potential sequel (Since the game effectively gave endings that implied the other characters were not going to be put in active combat again, it'd probably have starred a new roster). After all, we never figured out who "HE" was in the end, so there's definitely some plot left to be figured out. It really does feel like the game's story went through a few re-writes; Mark probably was not meant to be the final scenario and ending, it doesn't even really make sense since he never properly met the soldiers before suddenly finding them as though he already knew them when saving Zack. The Monk and Robocop clone also feel like they're outright tacked on like assets from other scrapped games being thrown in a blender. Heck, even Rod's stage feels tacked on. Like, why are only half the characters coming together with organic plot connections? Perhaps I'm heavily overthinking this since this is meant to be an action game first, but it feels like they may had initially wanted a game where you were constantly loading different character save files as their stories interacted, and maybe had all of them contribute to the final boss encounter in the end, and this is so... not that.

@Shuukuriimudaisuki-sama8 күн бұрын
This game somehow makes me think that Contra and Burai had some kind of weird hybrid baby together. Kind of an interesting premise, but that ending...oof. But I guess that sort of thing is typical of platformers of this era, though the intricate introduction and gameplay mechanics would make you think there'd surely be more. I thought it was funny that I noticed the strange, somewhat ambiguous rock pattern in the background of Zack's mountain area and thought "hey, that looks like a face!" and then of course I couldn't unsee it... And then we get the X68000 footage and they actually went and just made it obviously a goddamn face. Nice touch.

Great review! My guess regarding that final scene was that it was a tribute to 2001 a Space Oddysey with the Starchild looking down on earth from space. It looks like the hero opens his eyes in space looking down at the planet Dios. (God) What that actually means was probably just bait for a sequel that never came. Thanks for this, way interesting!

@@Shuukuriimudaisuki-sama I could go on all day about why Persona 2 is my favorite despite playing the entire series, but the dungeons are simply the best because it's places like a gym, a shopping mall replete with locked storefronts, and a nightclub that becomes a proper dungeon by rumors. Even among SMT games where dungeons are nuke-ruined buildings and Abaddon's stomach P2's dungeons stand out the most.
@Shuukuriimudaisuki-sama8 күн бұрын
@ShadowBaofu I feel the same way. There's just something about the older games in the series that oozes personality, and I have to say Punishment is probably the most memorable title for me overall, being about adult characters and their problems in a realistic setting, rather than a bunch of students of one kind or another. It breaks the mold, and I hope to see more of it in Persona and SMT in the future.

A game that's certainly interesting and ambitious, even if I wish the story would weave the characters together more. The girl barely gets to have effect on the others, just gets rescued, the robot and monk plays no larger part at all, robot-riding boy rescues main protagonist but doesn't seem to get any pay-off for it... it feels like a game where they got inspiration from other sci-fi stories but didn't really bring it all together. Ambitious, and unfortunately a doomed venture... but an interesting look at a brief period in Japanese game history.

Thanks for the interesting video! I'm not familiar with this computer system. I love the pixel art in the cut scenes! The actual levels themselves I find hard on my eyes, though. I think it is because of the harsh colours in combination with the dithering, pixel aspect ratio, and the tile textures being too "busy". The ZX Spectrum's graphics have harsh colours, too, but its graphics aren't too hard on my eyes in comparison. I think that is because the colour clash on the Speccy prevents the textures from being too "busy", unlike with the PC-88's graphics, where it would be up to the pixel artist themselves to show some restraint, instead of that restraint being imposed on them by the hardware.

So its the Sci-Fi crossover of Ys III, Aliens, Robocop and Gall Force that we always wanted! As for that ending. SPACING FOR SPOILERS . . . . . . That sort of "authority never gets its comeuppance" bittersweet-ness seems to be a common trend in Japanese media, I've noticed It could also be that maybe they were planning a sequel. That's how I take Rick Hunt... errr sorry, Zack Hunt's scene at the end, that maybe he would start a rebellion or something. Incidentally I could not hear "character named Zack" and "artificial creation" without wondering if Zack maybe has a Buster Sword or had ever worked with someone named Sephiroth, if you get what I mean. It would actually be awesome if this small game somehow inspired parts of FF7.

That x68000 port… is that… typical of the era? It’s unplayably fast. No way they shipped it like that right? Is there some other screwing around you’re expected to do? It’s crazy if that’s intended. Like they played it and said yep this feels good. That can’t possibly be right.
@BasementBrothers8 күн бұрын
Yeah, you'd think, right? But there's no easy way to change the processor speed on an X68000. And the footage here is on real hardware that it was intended to be played on, using the original disks of the game. X68000 is not like PC-98 where there are a ton of different models that all run at different speed. There are no X68000 models that are slower than this. It really is a case of, yeah, they cared that little. These different versions of the game were all released within a period of 2 months. It's no wonder with the crazy deadlines they set for themselves that the quality control would be this bad. Zainsoft was already probably tanking by this point, if rumors are to be believed.
@BasementBrothers8 күн бұрын
And yeah, it actually is kind of typical of the era. I'm always finding all kinds of careless mistakes in these ports of old Japanese PC games. Whoops, they forgot gamepad support. Starting to get a feel for the art style this system produced. Always wondered why Ys 3 and Zeliard always felt similar art wise but now understand it was because of the art style used in these PC88 versions! Well I could be wrong but after seeing this title I am starting to see the similarities. Sort of like how you can usually tell a Nintendo game from a Sega game. The hardware dictates what an artist can do. Even if the art style is different from game to game it still fits the mold for a game from said system. Hope that made sense 😅 Always fun seeing this channel pop up in my feed! Get to see pixel art from games I never heard of!

The CD-ROM feature did sound good, much less floppy swapping, that's always good. But I can't stop thinking that they maybe underutilized the CD-ROM? Or idk, maybe other platforms kind of always gave me the impression that CDs give a drastic improvement in audio.
